Inspired by bfxr, which was inspired by sfxr, today we have ChipTone, which inspired me to make this video. At it's core its a straight forward game sound effect generator with a very nice user interface. Oh and it's free, available for Windows, Mac and HTML5.

Hey, ChipTone creator here, thanks for checking it out, glad you liked it! I do still plan to update - the sampler is nearly finished, and the sequencer is about halfway done, I just got caught up with doing a bunch of console port and other launches this year. I should definitely go fix the mac export soon at least though!!

Nice man! Glad to have bump into this and the creator taking care of it. Will be using it most likely in not long. EDIT: regarding the macOS save fix, what’s crazy is that on an ipad it works, it saves to a file, it’s flawless… which might be my go to method since it’s nice to detach a bit and just do sounds.

That's awesome. The sounds generated here remind me of the attack and move usage sounds in Earthbound and Pokemon Red/Blue.

I love chiptone and I always preferred it over BFXR simply alone because of the more approachable interface. I also found it quite easy to make my own sounds with it without using the generator function. It's a nice light weight over complex synthesizer software.

Something i’ve done is to take sounds made in chiptone and plug them into LMMS to convert sounds into instruments. As for an offline app, I saved the page as an html file.

One of the nice things with the bfxr UI is that it would remember the settings for all the sounds you’ve created, so you could use the randomize button to create, like, 20 sounds, and then you could easily compare them to figure out which one is better for your game. This UI doesn’t seem to have that functionality.

F for the headphone users 😅 But this is actually really neat. I love 2D retro games, and I definitely recognized a few of the base sounds. The mutate and randomize are the stars of the show though. For what it is, it's pretty impressive, especially for being free. I hope the dev (or someone else) pick it back up and iterate on it more.

Yeah, this is upcoming. Would have actually had it out a few days ago, but I was trying to come up with a better way to capture 4:3 iPad footage for KZbin and its 16:9 format. I thought I figured out a way, but it didn't work. I hate black bars :(

I've used ChipTone a bunch and I really like it. Sadly all these synth sfx generators always miss a few important parts or sound design. None of them have reverb nor EQ (i realize there's low/mid/high eq in the bottom right of chiptone but it's not fine grained enough). Which is why I just use Reaper for sound design instead.
