The beginnings of Chiropractic are shady just like the beginnings of the medical profession. Remember, not too long ago MDs were blood-letting that resulted in many patient fatalities. The Chiropractic profession is obviously not based in magnetic healing any longer. Are you the same person you were today than at age 5? Modern Chiropractic is more evidence based. Please see my references above like the World Health Organization, Rand report 1991 and 1995 , annals of internal medicine and Duke University study. Please also realize that the term "Doctor" does not mean healthcare provider: it's the length of education that makes a doctor. An astro-physicist is a doctor, but you wouldn't have them check out your mole. You mean physician...and yes, Chiros have physician status in the U.S. Chiros are not trying to be medical doctors just the same way dentists are not trying to be MDs.

engelsseele2 I’m sorry for your story. If you were treated for 3 months and your back pain never went away, the problem was with the practitioner, not the profession. If you’re not seeing improvement within one month, the doctor of Chiropractic needs to do further investigation like diagnostic imaging, labs, nerve conduction studies, etc. However, a herniated disc will go in and out, an adjustment is not likely to push it out but lifestyle is. Studies show that disc herniation happens because the nutrition to the disc is diminished. How? The endplate cartilages, which allow for passage of nutrients from the bone to the disc are degenerated by inflammatory cytokines from your fat and knee cartilage. An inflammatory lifestyle will degenerate the endplates and disc nutrition will be poor. Inflammation causes pain, so the person is less likely to want to move, which leads to ligament restriction. The brain controls postural muscles, but inflammation causes the brain to disconnect from the deep postural muscles allowing for the protection on the disc from being squeezed by body weight to dysfunction. The the disc environment becomes acidic, dehydrates, weakens and under normal pressure it ruptures. When the nucleus gets out, there’s a 40% chance of infection from the bacteria that is in your skin, (which gets into your blood eg., when you brush your teeth) This can cause excruciating pain, sciatica, the irritated inflamed nerve can weaken, lose circulation from bulging pressure, etc. Blaming the chiropractor who’s been adjusting the spine is like blaming the dentist for making one’s gums bleed in a deep cleaning when one has periodontitis. Unless the clinician treats the underlying inflammatory problem and rehabilitate the disc, the surrounding tissues, the health of the brain, core and posture, the patient does not get permanently better. Spinal rehabilitation and conditioning requires that the person becomes healthy overall.

TRUE STORY: I went to a chiropractor for about a month, once a week. The fourth visit, his receptionist was out, and - not knowing if he was with a client or not - I headed back to the treatment room, which had the door cracked open. Through the crack, I could see a woman sitting on the treatment table, and I could see the chiropractor pointing to something on the wall, out of my view. I heard the chiropractor say to the woman "see, this is the x-ray of your neck and spine, and you can see these spots ... here and here ... where the spine is out of whack .... " I listened for a few seconds and then turned to go back to the waiting room. Before I could reach the waiting room, I heard the door to the treatment room open and so turned back around to see the woman exiting the room, with the chiropractor right behind her, so I started back toward the treatment room. The chiropractor saw me and said, "Ahh, just the man I was expecting, come on in." I followed him into the room. He did the adjustment, and then said he had something he wanted to show me. He pointed to the same wall, where I could now clearly see an X-ray of someone's neck and spine. He then said "see, this is an X-ray of your neck and spine, and you can see these spots ... here and here ... where your spine is very badly out of whack ..." I thought he was joking at first. Then I realized that to him, the chiropractor, it had appeared as though I had just arrived at his office, when he and the other patient exited the treatment room. He had no idea that I had stood just outside the door for thirty seconds of this same "schpeal" he had given the previous client. There was only one door into the treatment room. There was no one else in the office, as his receptionist was gone, and - even if there had been an entire team there working with him - no one entered or exited that room except the chiropractor and the patient. I even asked him if he was sure that was my X-ray, and he uttered a very unconvincing "uh ... yes" - like I kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I never went back, and - if I'm being honest - that was the day I came to believe that 95% of chiropractic medicine is bs. Maybe I wrong, but one thing is clear to me, to this day. That chiropractor had done that scam a million times. He said almost exactly the same thing to me that he had said to the woman, with the same timing and meter .... like one says the pledge of allegiance.

Like: spinal mechanics, ergonomics, and explanation of treatment in general that helps the patient understand the problem/treatment. This circumstance does not appear to be that kind of situation. The reason why chiropractors are recommended in US - because it's a HUGE business. Go outside US - and see what the primary option is - it's not chiropractors - it's usually physical therapy. Cracking bones doesn't do jack shit longterm - the most beneficial thing chiropractors can do is massage, and discuss exercises to strengthen muscles and correct bad habits and posture - but the adjustments, cracking is total bullshit when it comes to longterm results or cures for chronic issues that require major physical therapy and surgery - you are just wasting time. I mean people go to see chiro for minor stuff that will get better on it's own given time.

Facts: The reason he said chiropractic is 98% bs is because he lives in the US where many of the chiropractic schools are subluxation/ philosophy based and not evidence/ science based. Chiropractic has some shady beginnings, but some schools are more objectively evaluating the evidence and don't see chiropractic as a business like most chiropractors in the US. It is a shame that the public gives their money to 'doctors' who tell people they can cure their asthma and diabetes by re-aligning the spine to supply proper nerve innervation to the organ with the problem. That is what they teach at Palmer, the school that the doctor in this video went to. It's a pretty deep rooted issue that can't easily be solved. Patients need to do their research when selecting a chiropractor and if they at any time say the word "subluxation" that should immediately raise a red flag.

I have had very interesting cases before which were fixed in one or two visits. The cases ranged from a kid who was passing out 4-5 times a day, a lady with a swollen hand which looked like a balloon, women having bladder problems after delivering their babies, gall bladder issues, and someone with a massive lower back disc herniation who was fixed after 2 visits, and has sent me many referrals over the years. Here is how chiropractors use psychology dishonestly to make themselves look legit. They literally can borrow whatever terms and research from real medicine and yet keep calling themselves “chiropractors”. When a patient is becoming skeptical they will actually use real concepts in physiology and real spine surgery and the patient will become confused to what extent this chiropractor “knows” his stuff. The problem is the core concept of chiropractors. Look up online where the term “chiropractic” come from and why it is not based on any science. If these non-doctors claim to be able to help somehow that only they can, then ask yourself, or them, “what is chiropractics?” , “Why aren’t they called just “spine therapist’ or something straightforward?

Chiropractic means done by hand. BTW, I think you are confusing the term Doctor. A biologist, chemist, physicist, or geologist is also a "doctor". PT's call themselves doctors, but do not have physician status. Chiros do have physician status. You are correct, the concepts in modern day chiropractic are borrowed: just like every single science on the planet. That's the way science works. I was taught in school by: biochemist, neurosurgeon, Anatomist PhDs, Microbiologist, etc. If you are talking about research: there is a ton out there about how Chiro can help coming from recognized authorities: Duke University, Harvard University, the World Health Organization, and much more. Why do you think that Chiros are included in health insurances like Medicare? I will accept your point...A lot of Chiros still use salesy/gimmicky methods based on pseudo scientific concepts (heal all disease w/ spinal manipulation) to get patients on care plans. Patients have a tough time knowing if they are going to a Chiro that does this or not. That's why this guy is pushing this evidence-based Chiro movement. You see, he is trying to further the profession and you are thwarting those efforts by your comments. The exact things that you are complaining about, he is trying to change/improve and you are bad-mouthing him for his efforts. That is the irony here.

By improving the joint mechanics (manipulation, traction, decompression, stretches, exercises, soft tissue therapy, etc.) the insult/stress to the disc can be relieved. This gives the disc a chance to heal and remodel. We know that discs can do this. In fact, non-contained disc material can be eliminated by macrophages. Discs may heal on their own, but recurrent damage is common and hence why you would want to improve the mechanics. Discs themselves do not have a blood supply. Vessels would create weak spots in the disc. So, instead the body uses diffusion to move materials in and out of the disc. Diffusion only occurs if there is movement of the disc called imbibition. This is the means for disc cells to acquire nutrition and get rid of waste (what every cell in the body needs to heal). So you can see that if the segment is locked and putting stress on the disc, it will simply continue to degenerate. Personally, If I have a patient that has neurological symptoms with MRI confirming a disc issue, I tell them right away that we need to consider a surgical consult if we cannot get improvement (I've got a great neurosurgeon in town that I refer to). It is a very honest and transparent conversation. Almost all of them want to try care with me before entertaining the idea of surgery. I only end up having to refer less than 20% of the time. Sometimes, they end up having surgery a few years later anyways, but that is usually because they stopped doing home rehab and went back to bad habits. This is another reason why PT can help and why we do this at my clinic. That is the dead honest truth. Consider this... Imaging results are not strongly correlated to symptoms (hard to believe!). You can have a person with no symptoms and find a whopper of a herniated disc. On the other hand, you can have patients with spinal pain, radiation, and numbness and find nothing on MRI or CT. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6102824/. This is frustrating for doctors and patients alike. I have discussed this in depth with several radiologists (Yes, I refer out for MRI and sometimes discuss the results with the radiologist). Yes, PT does help. However, a Chiro has some additional tools, especially the adjustment that restores position and movement of an abnormal vertebral segment. I've had many patients come to me after they have tried physical therapy without success, then get better at my clinic. There is nothing wrong with PT (It's great!), but sometimes you just have to have someone get in there physically and manipulate that spinal segment. Beware, stronger manipulations can make matters worse. Methods such as flexion-distraction, mobilization, or non-rotary HVLA maneuvers are usually the best way to start. I have had several patients with neuro symptoms resolve, even when they were persisting for over a decade. Then again, I'm not a 5-minute doc. Most my disc patients spend at least 30 minutes in the clinic...sometimes an hour. You might try to find a multidiscipline clinic with Chiro, PT, MD or NP. Sometimes you can find a doc that is both Chiro/PT or Chiro/MD. It's more and more common these days. Many Chiros are moving to this multi-modal model and the clinics that offer a variety of treatment methods seem to get better results.

If you leave a chiro office not understanding what the purpose of the treatment is or how/why it can help then your chiro didn't do their job properly. Technically speaking if your chiro didn't explain what they where going to do and why they are going to do it and what the risks associated with the treatment are then they do not have informed consent from you to provide that treatment. That would be considered professional misconduct in most jurisdictions in North America.

Exercises are the answer. This has been proven for centuries. Adjustments of the spine and ribs can help early on…they do aid with pain reduction but does nothing to kerp it away. The problem lies with the type of exercise, how much reps, sets, hold time , amount of effort, is pain ok with exercise, etc. Movement is the cure. And you sometimes need a coach to assist you and progress you. I’m speaking with 30 years of experience as a physical therapist who also does manipulations. Progressive exercise has a cumulative effect, requires effort and most people aren’t interested, until they’re dying in pain.

"You have a lot of lactic acid build up. What kind of workouts are you doing?" I was doing nothing but hitting the heavy bag. "You're a righty?" I was. "Tucking your chin to the shoulder is doing this. You could counter it by switching to lefty half the time." After about 20 minutes he does the neck crack and I hear an explosion of pops, and burst out laughing from the relief. He also showed me that my workout put my hips off center, so one foot was higher than the other, and adjusted my hips, too, and stretched me out on the table some more. Having said this: this man is a true gem. No one else has ever provided this kind of care that I've seen. I see him 2-3x a year, and always feel terrific for it.

@@Demise09732 Never heard of a physiotherapist. I have a very good chiropractor who does about 30 minutes of massage and stretching before the cracking, so wouldn't ditch him, but the physio sounds good.

Summarising evrything i gathered from top MDs and chiropractors :- - You mostly dont require a chiropractor at all times. - Chiropracty is not at all evidence based, and mostly aim to make small adjustments to remove the pain and not the cause of the pain. - with time some of the issues/pain come back which makes people go to the chiropractors/qualified doctors again. Chiropracty does not treat the cause, its like a painkiller numbing the pain for a certain time. - in most cases, chiropractors make adjustment to make you feel better for a short time and then tell you to do physiotherapy or physical ecercise which actually helps you in the long run. Any doctor would have recommended the same hence the only benefit chiropractor is bringing is making an adjustment to possibly reduce the pain for a short time. This can however not work at times. - if physical exercises and conditioning helps you in the long run then you really dont need a chriopractor, rather a physio would be best.

Chiropractic is NOT BS. I speak from experience. I have been in a few situations of major back issues/ pain and the adjustments helped me enormously. I could barely walk one day because I had thrown out my lower back so badly. The Chiropractor relieved the pressure on my nerves to the point that the stabbing pain went away. What most people don't seem to get is that they make the mistake of thinking Chiropractors are CURATIVE. That once you're adjusted you will never have another back problem in your life. Wrong way to view them. They're like Mechanics for your back. The only issue i have with Chiropractors is the designation of "DR". I am sorry but they are not Dr's and they shouldn't be awarded the designation as such.

People seem to misunderstand that the word doctor is simply an educational title, not a title that specific to the practice of medicine. A doctor is anybody who has a terminal degree in their field of study. A physician is someone who has a doctorate in the field of medicine. You can have a doctorate in mathematics, interior design, philosophy, nursing, engineering etc. Anybody with terminal post graduate degrees in any field has every right to the title “Dr.”. A chiropractor has a doctorate degree in chiropractics, hence being referred to as “Dr.”

@@adamroz4027 actually Adam, MDs, DOs, and DCs are physicians under federal law and have been for decades. But yes, you are right about the title of doctor meaning 'learned person'.

@@thewellnessinspiration4670 Yeah but dentistry is a real discipline. I don't believe Chiropractors are Doctors. Chiropractic is a Pseudo science. A crazy hippy chiro lady used a hammer type tool on my neck one time, when it was my low back that had issues. She said it was connected to my low back🙄 Anyway after that session,my neck would make a cracking sound when I would look down or a certain way. I should sue her for malpractice. I’m not saying all chiros are bad,but after that incident I have trouble trusting them, even if they have good reviews on ratemds.

I have had lots of back pains and problems and have never once been to a chiropractor. Over time my back heals itself. Ii saw my mom go to a chiropractor after she threw out her back. She walked into the chiropractor’s office, she wattled out and sat in the car and cried because the pain was worse than when she went in. She found relief through physical therapy.

The Evidence Based Chiropractor definition: a system of noninvasive therapy which holds that certain musculoskeletal disorders result from nervous system dysfunction arising from misalignment of the spine and joints and that focuses treatment especially on the manual adjustment or manipulation of the spinal vertebrae. could you please post one peer reviewed study that proves: "certain musculoskeletal disorders result from nervous system dysfunction arising from misalignment of the spine and joints"?

Happens every day with millions of people. For example- a spondylolisthesis is a misalignment of the vertebral, or slippage. This is directly responsible for compression in the neural formaminal canals, causing pain/sciatica/radiculopathy. Chiropractic is a great conservatice treatment choice for low grade spondys.

The Evidence Based Chiropractor "happens to millions of people" (unless they're participating in a scientific study I guess.) So you people have been around since the 1800s and NOT ONE study since then has produced any conclusive evidence to support your core philosophy? I stand by my original statement, you call yourself evidence based, but when asked to produce some you give me that embarrassing "millions of people" statement. I could piss in a bottle and label it "back relief elixir" and millions of people would say it helps them, it's called the placebo effect, now throw in the fact that you quacks put on a white coat and call yourself doctors in order gain people's trust and that effect greatly increases on people. what you people do borders on criminal.
