Joe Rogan recently came out with a viral video where he claimed 98% of chiropractic is BS.
In his conversation, he made quite a few great points. But, other parts of his opinion might be a little closer to fiction instead of fact.
Here are a few evidence-based thoughts regarding his comments.

Palmer wanted to establish chiropractic as a religion to resolve this problem."* *"A 2003 profession-wide survey found "most chiropractors still hold views of Innate Intelligence and of the cause and cure of disease consistent with those of the Palmers."* And they don't believe in vaccines *"During the COVID-19 pandemic, chiropractic professionals spread anti-vaccine disinformation."* So at best it's pseudoscientific and ineffective but at worst it's fatal *"It is frequently associated with mild to moderate adverse effects, with serious or fatal complications, several deaths have been associated with this technique."*

engelsseele2 I’m sorry for your story. If you were treated for 3 months and your back pain never went away, the problem was with the practitioner, not the profession. If you’re not seeing improvement within one month, the doctor of Chiropractic needs to do further investigation like diagnostic imaging, labs, nerve conduction studies, etc. However, a herniated disc will go in and out, an adjustment is not likely to push it out but lifestyle is. Studies show that disc herniation happens because the nutrition to the disc is diminished. How? The endplate cartilages, which allow for passage of nutrients from the bone to the disc are degenerated by inflammatory cytokines from your fat and knee cartilage. An inflammatory lifestyle will degenerate the endplates and disc nutrition will be poor. Inflammation causes pain, so the person is less likely to want to move, which leads to ligament restriction. The brain controls postural muscles, but inflammation causes the brain to disconnect from the deep postural muscles allowing for the protection on the disc from being squeezed by body weight to dysfunction. The the disc environment becomes acidic, dehydrates, weakens and under normal pressure it ruptures. When the nucleus gets out, there’s a 40% chance of infection from the bacteria that is in your skin, (which gets into your blood eg., when you brush your teeth) This can cause excruciating pain, sciatica, the irritated inflamed nerve can weaken, lose circulation from bulging pressure, etc. Blaming the chiropractor who’s been adjusting the spine is like blaming the dentist for making one’s gums bleed in a deep cleaning when one has periodontitis. Unless the clinician treats the underlying inflammatory problem and rehabilitate the disc, the surrounding tissues, the health of the brain, core and posture, the patient does not get permanently better. Spinal rehabilitation and conditioning requires that the person becomes healthy overall.

The only reason chiropractic is "stood behind...as the first treatment option" is because doctors want to exhaust all minimally invasive methods before resorting to more complicated treatments like surgery. TRUE STORY: I went to a chiropractor for about a month, once a week. The fourth visit, his receptionist was out, and - not knowing if he was with a client or not - I headed back to the treatment room, which had the door cracked open. Through the crack, I could see a woman sitting on the treatment table, and I could see the chiropractor pointing to something on the wall, out of my view. I heard the chiropractor say to the woman "see, this is the x-ray of your neck and spine, and you can see these spots ... here and here ... where the spine is out of whack .... " I listened for a few seconds and then turned to go back to the waiting room. Before I could reach the waiting room, I heard the door to the treatment room open and so turned back around to see the woman exiting the room, with the chiropractor right behind her, so I started back toward the treatment room. The chiropractor saw me and said, "Ahh, just the man I was expecting, come on in." I followed him into the room. He did the adjustment, and then said he had something he wanted to show me. He pointed to the same wall, where I could now clearly see an X-ray of someone's neck and spine. He then said "see, this is an X-ray of your neck and spine, and you can see these spots ... here and here ... where your spine is very badly out of whack ..." I thought he was joking at first. Then I realized that to him, the chiropractor, it had appeared as though I had just arrived at his office, when he and the other patient exited the treatment room. He had no idea that I had stood just outside the door for thirty seconds of this same "schpeal" he had given the previous client. There was only one door into the treatment room. There was no one else in the office, as his receptionist was gone, and - even if there had been an entire team there working with him - no one entered or exited that room except the chiropractor and the patient. I even asked him if he was sure that was my X-ray, and he uttered a very unconvincing "uh ... yes" - like I kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I never went back, and - if I'm being honest - that was the day I came to believe that 95% of chiropractic medicine is bs. Maybe I wrong, but one thing is clear to me, to this day. That chiropractor had done that scam a million times. He said almost exactly the same thing to me that he had said to the woman, with the same timing and meter .... like one says the pledge of allegiance.

The reason why chiropractors are recommended in US - because it's a HUGE business. Go outside US - and see what the primary option is - it's not chiropractors - it's usually physical therapy. Cracking bones doesn't do jack shit longterm - the most beneficial thing chiropractors can do is massage, and discuss exercises to strengthen muscles and correct bad habits and posture - but the adjustments, cracking is total bullshit when it comes to longterm results or cures for chronic issues that require major physical therapy and surgery - you are just wasting time. Here is how chiropractors use psychology dishonestly to make themselves look legit. They literally can borrow whatever terms and research from real medicine and yet keep calling themselves “chiropractors”. When a patient is becoming skeptical they will actually use real concepts in physiology and real spine surgery and the patient will become confused to what extent this chiropractor “knows” his stuff. The problem is the core concept of chiropractors. Look up online where the term “chiropractic” come from and why it is not based on any science. If these non-doctors claim to be able to help somehow that only they can, then ask yourself, or them, “what is chiropractics?” , “Why aren’t they called just “spine therapist’ or something straightforward?

Facts: The reason he said chiropractic is 98% bs is because he lives in the US where many of the chiropractic schools are subluxation/ philosophy based and not evidence/ science based. Chiropractic has some shady beginnings, but some schools are more objectively evaluating the evidence and don't see chiropractic as a business like most chiropractors in the US. It is a shame that the public gives their money to 'doctors' who tell people they can cure their asthma and diabetes by re-aligning the spine to supply proper nerve innervation to the organ with the problem. That is what they teach at Palmer, the school that the doctor in this video went to. It's a pretty deep rooted issue that can't easily be solved. Patients need to do their research when selecting a chiropractor and if they at any time say the word "subluxation" that should immediately raise a red flag.

If you don't think they are good advice, then why would it be good advice when the chiropractor tells you to do it? I also never claimed to be a doctor, but if you go to a doctor and you ask them about being generally more healthy, these are the things they will talk about. Also, you don't get a certificate when you graduate from medical school. You get a diploma. Would you like a picture of my wife's medical school diploma? This he called a "spinal misalignment", or "subluxation". He thought if you "realign" the spine you'd cure the disease. "A subluxated vertebra ... is the cause of 95 percent of all diseases ... The other five percent is caused by displaced joints other than those of the vertebral column."

I was about 30 and working out everyday. One day I couldn't turn my head to the left. The gym had a chiro so I popped in. He starts with range of motion stretches and massage. "You have a lot of lactic acid build up. What kind of workouts are you doing?" I was doing nothing but hitting the heavy bag. "You're a righty?" I was. "Tucking your chin to the shoulder is doing this. You could counter it by switching to lefty half the time." After about 20 minutes he does the neck crack and I hear an explosion of pops, and burst out laughing from the relief. He also showed me that my workout put my hips off center, so one foot was higher than the other, and adjusted my hips, too, and stretched me out on the table some more. Having said this: this man is a true gem. No one else has ever provided this kind of care that I've seen. I see him 2-3x a year, and always feel terrific for it.

In addition to my previous comment - because I've reflected on this over the past couple of days - all the naysayers and critics should take 25 minutes and watch this video. I like this chiropractor, and this video is a good example of what a chiropractor can decipher that a medical doctor wouldn't have a clue about. Watch the entire thing. I've had my own profound example in the last 3 years - that has to do with a persistent heart arrythmia, and persistent lower back instability that ultimately relates (as it turns out) to a knee injury I sustained in the service that resulted in a reconstruction - both of which I consulted medical specialists about for decades. After not having seen a chiropractor for approximately 20 years, it was a chiropractor that put these issues to bed in short order, in the space of 3 weeks, and years after I had lost hope about both medical complaints. I had not even gone to see the chiropractor about those specific issues. Watch the video and, while you do it, try to push the prejudice out of your mind: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYqremmbmp1rfbc

Summarising evrything i gathered from top MDs and chiropractors :- - You mostly dont require a chiropractor at all times. - Chiropracty is not at all evidence based, and mostly aim to make small adjustments to remove the pain and not the cause of the pain. - with time some of the issues/pain come back which makes people go to the chiropractors/qualified doctors again. Chiropracty does not treat the cause, its like a painkiller numbing the pain for a certain time. - in most cases, chiropractors make adjustment to make you feel better for a short time and then tell you to do physiotherapy or physical ecercise which actually helps you in the long run. Any doctor would have recommended the same hence the only benefit chiropractor is bringing is making an adjustment to possibly reduce the pain for a short time. This can however not work at times. - if physical exercises and conditioning helps you in the long run then you really dont need a chriopractor, rather a physio would be best.

You're young and have a lot to learn - hopefully you'll learn for the rest of your life so don't be too quick to judge the abilities of a good chiropractor. I've been corrected by my own patients when I first told then that they are not doctors or have nothing to offer. They got results which, unfortunately, proved me wrong early in my medical career. Good luck in your studies and keep an open mind when treating your future patients.
