Chirp Scratch Tutorial by DJ Short-e. One of Short-e's fav scratches!
Short-E Scratches with her fader reversed or hamster style. See (www.studioscratches.com/hamste...)
DJ Short-e teaches you how to do the Chirp scratch. Named because it sounds like a bird chirping away, this scratch is attained by playing the sample forwards and cutting the end of the sample off, then bringing the record back and turning the fader on. Repeat.
You probably heard DJ Premier use this scratch loads and it can be really funky. Although relatively simple you can achieve much with this scratch, combining it with flares for the chirp flare.
Beat # 8528 used in this clip is available here:

24 people do not know quality instruction when they see it. I've seen tons of tutorials on youtube, this is by far the best I've seen. I'm a mixer and not much of a scratcher. I haven't gone past the transformer, but this instructional makes me want to learn more. Thank you.

Great tutorial!! I've put into practice what you have shown and man, it feels so good to finally get the hang of scratching. It took me a few hours to get the hang of it but I got it in the end. I just have to get my timing right and practice a bit more before I get to the standard I want!!! I love all of your tutorials!!!

I think the most important thing in the chirp is the coordination between the fader and the vinyl. That's what i found hardest, in fact i'm still working on it. Good tutorial Short-e, thank you!

Oh I see! :) yeah, I do that too! I learned from a Total Eclipse tutorial to use a sticky dot (circle) on the reverse side & then turn it over on front & pop the spindle through it (makes it tight as a piggy in a blanket after that!) Thanks for clearing all that up for me! Hope to see a video on it soon! :)

Hi there! Thanks so much for your tutorials, they are absolutely priceless!! Am just starting out (at the age of 28!) and your vids are extremely helpful. Quick question, which track on Superseal has this sound? I want to mark mine up and practise over the same sounds you use. Also cant see if you're scratching on a on/off turntable? Which scratch records from your website do you recommend? Im a 90s golden age kinda guy haha! Thanks a million. Ru1

First let me echo what's been said: I truly appreciate your tutorials. They've been really helpful for me. I had two questions, though. 1) Did you post your vids in the order that one should learn? I've been having trouble with the advanced part of the Chirp and was wondering if I could move on to something else before I master it. 2) Does the height of your table seriously affect how you scratch? I feel like mine may be a little low. Is there a generally accepted way to measure that? Thanks

It's called "hamster style", there's a switch on some mixers that allows you to reverse the cross fader (mainly on better quality scratch mixers). Many DJs find it more comfortable to scratch hamster style, since to do many moves, it is easier to bounce the fader off of the side of the fader slot using the index and middle fingers rather than their thumbs.

Peace Shorty! I'm still practicing trying to perfect this technique... I gotta question, you started in 2000. Did you come in with a mindset of "I want to learn the chirp technique, I want to learn the flare technique"? Or did you simply want to learn to scratch? If so, did you naturally develop the chirp technique? Because in 2000 there wasnt any online tutorial vids teaching the methods...

yeah, if you could record a tutorial on marking records, that would be awesome!!! I hope you do :) On your video here, I just got confused because you have two taped markers (1 shorter at 3 position & 1 longer one at 12 position) so I just wondered why you had put two markers. You mention you only use one marker at the 12, but if I'm seeing this right, this video has your start at the 3, right (& another one at 12)? Anyway, thanks for the help, I love ur videos and I learn so much from them! :D

i noticed you have your fader on reverse, so when it is completely on the side closest to the turntable the volume is completely off. when you perform other scratches is it your personal preference to keep it on reverse? or only for the chirp scratch? i usually keep it on regular but for chirp scratch it feels easier & more comfortable when its on reverse. but all other scratches i have to do on regular lol. its weird but i guess i gotta keep practicing it on reg . great vid by the way

No prob :) it has worked really good for me so far :) hey, not to be more intrusive or buggy or anything, but I figured since we're on the topic of vid tutorials, I was wondering if you could maybe do a tutorial one day for a Hydrophonic scratch? I ask becuz I can't find any good examples of it. If you've never heard of it, you can look up ''scratching'' on wikipedia & it's under the sophisticated techniques section. If you can do one someday, cool, if not, no thang. Have a great weekend! cya
