I needed a Mallet to use with my Narex Mortise Chisels. I didn't have the kind proper sized wood to make match my sketch, so I used with I had...Olive, Cherry, Channel Island Ironwood (for the striking faces) and Beech for the handle.

Hi Dude....Just ran into your page sitting here, waking up with my Turkish coffee (my latest adventure). Looking through your videos I found we both have very similar interests. Old wooden Plow Planes, wooden hand planes, old pocket watches, my gosh, ha. I am a life long manual machinist/tool maker still on the job 48+ years. My interest in photography is about making the brass lens holder on the old cameras for Ambrotype style. Perhaps I will some day actually make a wet plate photo but as of now I have not. Why I have such an interest in the old, hands on, skills probably comes from using modern machinery daily BUT always thinking about all those wonderfully skilled craftsmen working before electricity. The very old Fusee pocket watches fascinates me no end ! Looking at the skill level of the watchmaker!!!.....I will slowly explore your channel. I have subscribed and will like all I watch.....Thank You......TM PS- Don't get me talking about different woods omg! I was just given 2 very large dry stumps of Lignum vitae about One foot x Two foot. I am close to full retirement and am now seriously thinking about building a wooden gear wall clock.... that will be quite an adventure in itself.

Mmmm Turkish Coffee! Love that stuff! I envy your choice of profession...I really wanted to be a machinist way back in the day, and if truth be told, would love to have a machine shop now! The lens holder is a good project. Those old lenses have so much character, and there is just something very sensual about lenses. Don't know what it is, but I have always been a fanatic for big glass :) I have an old Nikon lens...maybe 250 mm...that I want to scavenge the lens elements from and make a telescope or something. I envision making a jig with sliding element clamps so I can play with lens placements until I find something that actually works. Maybe this winter ;) Those old fusee watches were made by absolute wizards! I have a watchmakers lathe, and even though it is capable of some amazing accuracy, actually making something so precise seems nearly impossible with it. Still, it is a ton of fun to have. :) Your lignum vitae must weigh a ton! I have worked that a bit making handles for the knives I made, but I think the clock is a great idea! Perfect gear material...Low friction/self lubricating and very stable. And working it is not really much different than working brass. Anyway, thanks for subscribing and telling me what all you are doing! Drop a note anytime, I am really interested to see what you got on the burner :)
