Looks good, but it has the substandard movement inside that Certina factory tests only in 3 positions. It is not tested in other 2 - 3 positions. Whilst you mention ETA2824 movement? It is based on that movement .... but heavily modified. Since you have timegrapher? Test it in the 3H position (crown up), and you might find that it has 3.0 ms beat error and it loses 20s per day, like my Certinas. The movement is pig to adjust with 2 screws on the balance wheel, and I don't intend to play with adjustment, whilst the watch is under warranty. I bought the watches for my 10 year old nephews .... rather hoping they won't ever come close to a timegrapher.p
@ADudeAndHisWatches
@ADudeAndHisWatches Ай бұрын
A lot of the performance has to do with the fact that they don't do much to tune it. I imagine a good watchsmith could get it much closer and better. The main modifications as I understand it are the balancing adjustment, and the gearing. Far as I can tell, the rest seems pretty much standard. You do need to keep in mind that it is a fairly inexpensive watch. I think they could do better, but in that price range, most watches are a bit of a crap shoot. That being said, It is still one of my favorite watches...The bracelet and the super good anti-glare treatments have a lot to do with that, though :) Thanks of stopping by!

The movement had quite a few mods. It has been slowed down, it has plastic gears, plastic fork, nivachron hair spring, larger main spring, adjustment on balance wheel .... and probably a few other things. Whilst Certina is a cheap watch (£760.,- in UK), the cost difference between the basic ETA2824 movement, a better ETA2824 movement and top of the range ETA 2824, with machine polishing, accurised to COSC standard is less than £50,- The Powermatic 80 movement is actually close to the top of the ETA2824 price range. Standard movement has only 38 hrs power reserve. Powermatic 80 has 80 hrs power reserve and much higher resistance to magnetism (plastic gears and nivachron) .... but to reduce the cost ... the movement ETA CO7.811 has no embellishments whatsoever .... and to bring the labour cost down, the factory doesn't bother with the tuning of their movements or tuning of the finished watch. Certina relies on people wearing the watch and adjusting the hand forward by 3 minutes once a month. Which is obviously alright for some people. My main complaint was that their Swatch service centre .... which is meant to iron out any problems and accurise the movement .... doesn't bother. They do it with any watch, even with Omega Speedmaster (I have 4 of them in my collection). Anyway, with Certina .... I sent all 4 watches in, all with Powermatic 80. One was there 4x one 3x and two 2x. In the end I gave up and decided to write to Mr Nicholas Hayek about it. I just didn't get to it yet. The first Certina Diver sent in came back one month later with a note .... "watch was demagnitused" ... I sent it back, and a month later, it came back with the note, "we swapped the movement" (it was all over the place) .... I sent it back again and a month later it came back and it had a beat error of "only 2.0ms in 3 positions and the accuracy of 15 sec +/- and a very low amplitude (which I considered a progress). I sent them photos of read-out from 2 different timegraphers, including dealer's Elma III timegrapher .... and Swatch service said "we will get our best Tissot technician" to work on the watch. Which they did. He managed to tune the watch to chronometer spec in 4 out of 5 positions. The 5th position was acceptable. It took them 4 months to get the watch to an acceptable standard. The second diver bought a week later went through the same paces, except that tuning was nowhere near as good. The third watch was GMT, and it ended up considerably worse. They obviously needed their best Tissot trained technician elsewhere. The 4th watch was the Himalaya edition, the same movement as the other 3 watches, but I gave up after 2 attempts, thinking that I will send the watch to Switzerland.

That was explained really well for me. the other two methods of adjustment are the 'get real steady and move the arm just a hair but whatever you do don't slip into the spring" that is by far my least favorite/. the other method uses a screw up higher that has a cam head on it no danger of slipping and destroying the watch and... since it is a screw it is much easier (for me) to get a fine adjustment... Thankfully that was on my Zodiac never did one before this but it is very easy to use and almost me proof. I can't really see the swan neck being capable of too much finer adjustment. I am sure it is in but cant imagine those thousands of an inch more/simpler adjustment really make any difference at all. The first style mentioned tho is pretty frustrating most of the time. no really good way to move the bar a hair and no way to tell if you did only move it a hair in any case. The improved one (IMO) in my Zodiac you are turning a screw in very small increments. the slot of the screw will tell you if you have moved it at all.

So a 1960s tudor 7928 case as far as my research shows is exactly the same as the Rolex 5512/5513. The 1680 submariner date was introduced in 1969 and also shares the similar case. With the caseback off, there is a recess cutout at the 9 o'clock to allow the movement to be removed more easily during service. The Tudor 7928 and Rolex 5512/5513 did not have this relief. I'm sure when the 1680 date came out it was the coolest thing since sliced bread so no surprise to see a Franken.

I'm not going to try to talk you out of a Rolex, but as someone that's had one, they're really not that great. It never kept time with the kind of accuracy it was supposed to have. Eventually it broke and I couldn't afford to fix it. I traded it for an Omega, which I didn't like and eventually sold. I never really liked when people would notice it and make a fuss about it, even though it was just a basic Submariner. Once a croupier at a table in Atlantic City made a big deal out of it, and then everybody at the table now knew what I was wearing. If someone gave me one today as a present I'd be happy to get it, but I don't think I'd make a special effort again to get one. Just my two cents. I'm really not trying to wreck your dream. @ADudeAndHisWatches
@ADudeAndHisWatches Жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan! That is a good question and not sure I can give a great answer, but I will share my experience :) When my watches have become hard to wind, it has always been that the oils have gotten dried up and maybe a little gummy. I don't imagine it is really the gaskets. How old are these watches? If they are going on 10 years, I would definitely say a good clean and service is your best bet. If they are newer than that, and haven't been used hard in a dirty environment, then it might be that you don't wind them much and the keyless works gets stiff...I would try winding them more to see if they free up some. I did have an inexpensive Chinese made watch that I suspect had cheap oils in it...That watch got really hard to wind, but after wearing and winding the watch for a week, it got much better. Hope this is helpful!

@@adamski101 That is interesting! Can you describe how stiff it is? The only time I have seen that with my watches is some older ones that haven't been wound for extended periods of time. I figured they probably had older style oils or were just drying up a bit and needed a good service. You don't expect to have really stiff winders on a new watch! I would think if it is painfully stiff and doesn't ease up pretty quick, you might want to return it and get another. I had to return a watch that had a rotating bezel operated by a crown that was just too hard to use. So hard, in fact, that I almost made a tool that would fit over the crown; something with a T-handle that saved my fingers. :)
