Happy to hear that you got your shop open. Smart to keep all your things outdoors, under your canopy. About metallic thread. I've sewn quite a bit with Ricky Timm's Razzle Dazzle metallic thread and found that if I hand wind the bobbin (or use a little bobbin winder machine) and sew your work upside down, using the bobbin thread like your top thread, it works fine. I have a drop in bobbin that helps, but if you keep a special bobbin holder set aside to use for this work and loosen the tension screw it should work just fine.

Julia, there are Metallica needles, made for metallic threads. Also Madeira has a gold colored thread that looks metallic and I use that instead, color #1791. Coats and Clark’s metallic worthless. Use Superior threads or Aurifil only. The rest, including Sulky, are fraught with weaknesses. Loosen top tension and lengthen

Hi Julia! I’ve had some success with metallic thread using a few different “tricks”. 1) try using invisible thread (mine was embroidery bobbin thread) with your metallic thread. Essentially you have two threads going through one needle. This works for me 2) change your tension - play around on scrap fabric and adjust the tension quite a bit making the top thread looser. 3). Use stabilizer behind your fabric and see if that helps. Good luck!

Julia, put your spool on the spindle, then take the end of the thread and thread a regular needle on it then push that through a piece of styrafoam 2x2in ( I used broken piece of a styra. cup) then remember the reb, needle and continue threading your machine in the reg. way . The styrafoam will be btween the the spindle and the second station to finish threading your machine. Ir's hard to explain but it works and also with transparent thread. The styrafoam helps by keeping the thread from twisting as it goes to the second place you have to thread. Good luck. Can't remember who suggested this.I hope this helps you. I love your shows and have seen just about all of them.

Hi Julia, I do not have a lot of luck with metallic thread either but, I was told to use a product that was a type of lubricant for using metallic threads. I was reluctant to use it for fear the product would gum up my machine but it didn’t seem to hurt anything. I will have to search and see if I have any left. It’s been a long time since I used metallic threads...if I find the name of it I will send it to you! Thank you for sharing your fun projects! Big hugs, Judy

Use a Metafil needle they are designed for metallic thread and cause less breakage. Some threads like to be vertical some horizontal depending on if they are twisted on the spool or wind straight. Stitch slower than other threads & sewers aid (silicon thread conditioner)would probably help too.

This is my fool proof method I would teach in my decorative thread class: 1. metallic needle from schmetz -a must have has a larger eye and cuts down on thread splintering and breakage. 2. A few drops of Sewer’s Aid - a true miracle!! this Prym- Dritz product is a silicone liquid that cuts down an the twisting and tangling of the thread as it feeds through the machine. 3. Reduce needle tension by about 2 settings, 4. Depending on the machine some people find a thread net helps to facilitate a more even flow of the thread. Generally I find the Sewer’s aid does the trick and most people do not need a thread net. 5. Sew more slowly and I constantly monitor how the thread is feeding. The above steps have allowed me to sew even with the most challenging metallic foil thread. I love sewing with my metallic threads in both my machine and my serger! I hope some of these tips help.
@stitchesbyjulia3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your information! I am going to copy this into my sewing notebook. Julia

@@stitchesbyjuliaAdditional Tip on using the Sewers aid: hold spool horizontally put a couple drops over thread and rub it over the thread on the spool and then place the spool on your machine. If you have a sewing machine or most sergers which only provides a vertical spool pin feed option you will need a thread net.

On the metallic thread...I have embroidered with a machine for many years. I use a single thread stand so that it has plenty of length to unwind and untwist loosely before it reaches the machine. And make sure the thread is unwinding off the spool on the right direction that it won't twist more. And always use a needle meant for metallic thread. And sewing at a slower speed will also help. Good luck.😊

Metallic thread- Definitely use a Schmetz Metallica needle, and regular sewing thread in the bobbin. You need the larger eye in the needle to allow thread to glide easily. You can add ‘Sewers Aid’ to the thread spool… few drops right on the spool of thread evenly along the length of the spool… it smooths the thread to reduce friction. It is also best to go slower than you normally would and work from a cold machine. When the machine warms up (including the thread guides) it can start to make the thread melt and get sticky. You want to do all you can to reduce friction, so loosening the thread tension is sometimes also necessary. Your videos are inspiring… thanks for sharing your processes. :-)

@Mickey282524 жыл бұрын
Make sure you use a "metallic needle". My machine Dr explained to me when I was having trouble that the needle has a larger hole so the thread goes deeper in to the fabric and they don't heat up as quick which breaks the thread. .Also go a bit slower when sewing this helps to keep the heat down. Hope this helps

I add a couple of drops of”All Purpose Thread Lubricant “ by Alphasew to my spools of metallic thread that shred. I sew slower and use a metallic needle. I have a couple of brands of the thread and they each act differently. I guess I’m saying , I learn the brand and then do the fiddling that the brand requires. I do think I’ll be trying some of the ideas presented here. I particularly like the idea of adding another thread especially an invisible thread. That will be my first experiment. Happy sewing. I do hope you show some of the projects you add metallic thread to. Love to see your artistic flair.

Make sure to use metallic (schmedtz) needles and not to tight of tension. Also, it matters which way your thread unwinds. Keep the needles changed as needed. I have used this process for years and never a problem. Also, using serger thread such as Gutterman tex 100 in the bobbin works better too. Cotton fabric is always better to use, Not heavy weight.
