Thank you for this wonderful description. I have seen the chitarra battente played live only once, by Owain Phyfe and the New World Renaissance Band, several years ago at a folk festival in my town. It was described as a wire-strung instrument used in Florence and maybe also other parts of Italy since the 1400s, for outdoor festivals. So even though the guitar originally came from Spain it has a very long history in Italy, I suppose.

What a powerful singer. Where in Italy is Rossano and can you tell us more about this ancient musical tradition?

Can you explain this a little bit more: "that he/she remembers for the tuning the bagpipe"? Do you mean that the chitarra battente was used to accompany the bagpipe or to tune the bagpipe? Or that the zampogna's harmonies are based on the chords of the chitarra battente?
