I saw this about 5 years later in Southern Ohio on it's way back to the west coast (after a rare east coast appearance). When I heard the whistle, my head cocked sideways like a dog sometimes does and headed for the rail road tracks! lol

The diesel tagging along serves two purposes: 1.) Head End Power (HEP), which all passenger cars are equipped with. Without it, you've got no lights, heat or air conditioning in the train. No one wants to ride in coaches that become sweatboxes in the summer heat... 2.) Dynamic Braking, which helps on downhill grades. Steam locomotive brake shoes are NOT cheap (Hell, NOTHING is when it comes to steam - even speaking as someone who loves them), so it helps to have a little extra assurance to prevent your train running away. Plus, when Amtrak still supported excursions, the steam locomotives ran under their insurance umbrella. The only time 4449 has run without a diesel on the mainline in the current climate was for the filming of "Train Time", an upcoming IMAX film.
