I mean, considering how much I primarily associate those names as XCOM soldiers in my head.

Basically the Independants have hostages and they want to exchange them for weapons with OpFor. BluFor wants to rescue the hostages. OpFor really doesn't care about the hostages, neither do the independants, when things go bad it is sometimes better to kill the hostages if you are the independants or OpFor to keep them from BluFor.
