Most “sealed” transmissions are titled that way to scare the normal diyer. They’re similar to some differentials where you’ll have a fill plug and a drain plug. Once you locate these two plugs your first open your fill plug (this way you can check the level and no point in draining something you can’t refill). Than remove your drain plug and drain all the fluid. The next step you’ll need to pick up some sort of hand pump (almost like a big soap dispenser) and hose. *in most vehicles you fill to the fluid spills over and out of the fill plug than you wipe away the excess and replace the plug and you should be good to go! 👍

Hey, thank you for the great video as always! I just wanted to share my experience with tuning. I have a 2018 TRD Off-Road and just like you, i was completely satisfied with how it drove for 2 years. I had no complaints whatsoever. Honestly, i didn’t really understand what everyone was complaining about. Then, a few months ago, i decided to get the KDMAX tune just to see what all the fuss is about. When i tell you, that tune is the best mod i have done to my truck by far, i am not exaggerating. I now feel like an “enlightened” tacoma owner. Instantly it became a completely different truck! Its hard to describe, but it really is 100% worth every penny. Gas mileage has stayed exactly the same for me but it drives so much better! The best way to describe it is that the truck now feels so light and agile. I do not have any experience with any of the other tunes out there but my advice is that the KDMAX tune should be the first thing any new taco owner does! Im really interested to hear your thought on it if you ever do get it. I am willing to bet that your experience would be similar to mine!

I noticed a significant improvement in the shift points after I spent some time using the adaptive cruise control. In the winter I get 16-18 miles per gallon...with a bit of time with the remote starter woworking. In the warmer weather, staying around the speed limit, and coasting down declines or gently gathering speed to help with the up-coming hill, I can get slightly over 23mpg.

Food for thoughts, I would always start you lugs with fingers then hit it with a driver. It's pretty easy to cross-thread them when you hit them with the driver straight of the bat.

my truck leaked from the 3rd brake light since i got it in 2016. i ended up replacing the seal myself last year. recently i took it in for the 60K service and they did the recall inspection. the interior needed the headliner and carpet replaced. additionally, they needed to do mold removal which necessitated stripping the interior to the bone, including removal of the soundproofing. now they cannot put it back together because, at the moment, there is no toyota soundproofing material in the states. they've had it since late September and cannot give me an estimated time for completion. just something to be aware of if you plan to take it in for service/recall. dont let them start the repair if they dont have all the parts on hand!

You can get a engine brace for the turns, it hold the body from twisting and when you get a ebay coilover kit it all works together to strengthen the stability of the truck in turns and general just driving or going fast.. and it looks good 👍 I love your enthusiasm for souping up a trd I bet you would love fast cars too. I got a ws6 trans am when I was 15 and I gotta say it changed my life

The 1 bar works fine. But they have 4 bars that do even more supposedly I've only had the 1. Make sure the holes are drilled by someone right because after time it could get locked in place from the stretching and won't be able to un bolt or just maintain it

before buying my 2020 TRDOR, I didn't know about the gear hunting on the AT Tacos. I wanted to get a Manual Taco because I've driven a a manual for the past 20 years prior. Plus, Manuals are getting rarer by the day so I wanted to get me one that will last me a while before I can't buy a manual anymore. I'm so glad I made that decision because that gear hunting problem on the ATs would've driven me crazy.

I think it would be a ton easier to just keep a spare key fob battery in the truck and change it out when it goes bad as opposed to changing the guts from the aftermarket to the factory. You gotta change the battery anyway right?

I had a 2016 first year of gen 3 I had shifting issues but nothing that made me get the computer reprogrammed HOWEVER there was a MAJOR issue with HVAC Blower I had it replaced 3 TIMES under warranty and last time it broke I used an after market one that lasted up to the day the truck was wrecked and totaled. I now have a 2022 Tacoma and do not have any issues with shifting and really rides smooth. Taco for life baby!

Great video. Of course since my rig has a a manual transmission, a lot of the 3rd Gen Tacoma issues do not apply. Noticed that you are using one of those reusable oil type filter. Not my favorite. You do a great job of keeping up with the maintenance, so the filter may be OK. IMHO, a good paper filter (e.g., WIX or Napa) is a better choice. Anyway... thx for the all the information.

I own a 23 TRD Off Road double cab, 6’ bed Tacoma with the premium pkg. It has only 6,500 miles and I changed the oil at 5K miles. My dealership will change the oil and filter and rotate the tires for as long as I own my Tacoma, but they’ll only change it every 10K miles. This means that I’ll have to pay for every other oil change. I’ve Always changed the oil and filter every 5K miles with Mobile 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic oil. I used the High Mileage oil because it has additives that reduces engine wear. I also change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles, as well as bleed the brakes and replace the power steering fluid. Every 3 years the radiator is back flushed and new antifreeze is added. Since Ive been retired I usually drive only 5-6K miles per year. I’m an absolute maintenance nut. I feel that maintenance is cheap when comparing it to the cost of replacing a 300K mile vehicle with a new one. We drove our last Toyota for 18 years (wife’s car) and I drove my RAV Limited 4WD with the 3.5L V6 for 13 years. In February 24, i bought my 23 Tacoma (it had 6K miles on it), but I saved over $7K off of the factory window sticker. So 6K miles saved us over $7K. I could have bought a new 24 Tacoma just like my 23, but I didn’t want the 2.4L Turbo. It is well known that a Turbo engine simply won’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. The 3.5L V6 is proven to be Reliable and Durable. It served me very well in my RAV. The most mileage I’ve ever gotten from any vehicle with the original power train was my first Toyota. I was a 78 Corolla that I bought from my sister in 83 (with 70K miles), as my college car. It was a Bare Bones Corolla. It was a White 2dr with Vinyl flooring and seats. It finally died in 02 at 488K miles. I then bought a new Camry and drove it until 11 when my needs changed and I needed a 4WD, so I traded in my 200K mile Camry in on my RAV 4WD with the 3.5L V6. I sold my RAV and our 36K mileage 4WD Ford Ranger XLT Super Cab pickup and bought our (my) 23 Tacoma, which I’ll drive until either I can no longer drive or I die.

No I haven’t changed my key fob it doesn’t bother me that much but I can understand why some people do it you talk about keeping all the parts of the original key fob so you can start up the truck. You could also just keep a couple of spare batteries in your glove box or centre console.

I am currently running a 255/85R16 on my stock Taco. These tires are 33 inches tall but they are skinny. It's got a great look and hasn't rubbed yet (It might at full lock and full stuff). I highly recommend the falken wildpeak MT in this size. Very quiet for a MT tire and not too expensive. They are also supposed to wear well. Thank you for the videos!

Hey just a heads up, when you're using a torque wrench, use the shortest extension necessary and keep one hand on the head one on the handle. The longer extensions are more likely to move off plane from seated on the fastener which can give you an incorrect torque value. 👍🏻👌🏻

From everyone I've talked to that has gotten 5.29 gearing, they get better gas mileage than from factory. Plus more low end response which is needed imo. Just asked my friend a couple days ago. He went from 15 mpg, to 19 & he's on 35s.

People who have modified their trucks with bigger tires and lots of heavy parts will definitely benefit from lower gearing. However, someone with a stock truck probably doesn't need it, unless they just want more responsive acceleration.

5.29 sure fire way to make sure you dont get anywhere fast. unless you plan on chopping the hell out of your truck and throwing 35"+ tires on it then its not worth it, and if you have a manual taco 5.29 dont even bother with regearing at all.

going with 5.29s or even 4.88s, you'll get better mileage while driving city (slower). your mpgs (compared to stock gearing) drop when you get on the freeway.

Concerning the issues some have with the transmission. I do 1 simple thing which gives me everything I need when I need it. Just drive your V6 6 speed in 5th gear. S mode. Leave it until you reach 50mph or so. Running ExxonMobil 87, I often hit high 20s with occasionally 34 mpg. Everything is stock on my 2016 trd sport 4x4 access cab. Driving in 5th reminds me of the way my transmission is in my 1995 SR5 V6 4x4 extended cab with 6 ft bed. There is NO hesitation! Oh. Drop an "aeroskin hood protector" by AVS on your hood. Matte black. 3M tape. Hugs the hood. You're welcome.

Largest tire is 265mm(10.5in) wide, what about the height? 65% (31in) 70% (32in) 85% (35in) For those that don't know. First number is width in millimeters, 2nd is height of sidewall, and 3rd is diameter of rim 265/70r17 for example 265mm is about 10.5in 70% of that is 196.75mm (7.74in) -Add rim diameter with height x2 to get total height/diameter 17+2(7.74)=32.48 10.5(265) wide is the recommended max width for 17x7 rims by most tire manufacturers I've run across. I currently have 265/70r17 and no rubbing. Just lifted with the Westcott designs lift and R4T Deaver add a leaf, along with a DRT body mount relocation kit. Just prepping for a larger tire later down the road.

I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off road also. Had the Fuel Pump Replaced on a Recall. Also waiting for the dealership to call me on the brake light thing. Love the Truck anyway. I have owned 2 Tacoma truck before this one, and had NO problems at all. Toyota also replaced the BSM sensors...twice. This fancy electronic stuff is not necessary at all. I also have a 2018 Camry SE and never had any problems with the same electronic sensors on it. Owned nothing but TOYOTA since 1992 with absolutely NO Problems at all. Just keep up the maintenance and they last longer than any other brand. Enjoyed your video.

My 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport ECM died and after a week it was replaced. The automatic shifting issue was improved but still somewhat annoying to me. The hunting is lessened but it's still there. The biggest issue is that if you suddenly need to accelerate while merging onto the freeway it'll pause a second before downshifting too aggressively to first or second and bounce off the rev limit and the truck won't be able to accelerate and you will either need cancel the merge or or risk getting rear ended by the vehicle behind you. It seems like the computer doesn't know what to do and goes into neutral momentarily or over revs and then eventually figures out the appropriate gear but that adds another second of delay. Very annoying and dangerous when you suddenly need to accelerate from a rolling start.

The timing belt gasket can leak. Simple gasket. Costs ~2500$ to get to it and replace it. And don’t forget the always popular frame rust issues. Seems this one will never go away.

I would say one of the biggest problems with the 3rd gen tacoma is oil dumping through the pcv valve system and pooling up in #5 and #6 when off camber. You will begin to see white smoke and your engine will take a huge dump from being hydrolocked. Usually a catch can will prevent this but it's never a full proof fix.

Catch can should fix that. I will be installing a catch can 5 miles in, and changing the oil/filter after the 500 mile break in.

Don't be afraid of the wording of a 'sealed transmission' it's just as sealed as your differentials & transfer case. The only difference is you will have to check the fluid level when it's 130°F and you will have to get creative to refill the fluid. I ran a tube through the engine bay and let gravity do its thing. I also replaced the filter which wasn't too bad. A couple hours or so and $100 for fluid and parts and I was on my way. (2nd gen Tacoma) btw)

Check the fluid at 98-113F. Checking at 130F will cause you to under fill the transmission.

Great video/info... Ive owned (2) 2nd Gens. 2020 2.7 sr (great truck) 2023 3.5 sport.. put almost 70,000 miles on 2.7 bullet proof motor. NEVER a issue with transmission as i drive speed limit (or less) . 5000 miles on new 3.5 with NO issues whatsoever. Tranny feels is/the same. Great trucks & 100% trouble free...... Change your oil at 1000 miles & EVERY 5000 miles after like she said. Makes it so easy to know when you need oil change as well. 5 10 15 20 so on.... Tire size SPOT ON. 265 or be ready to pay the $$$. Stock save money - Lift truck & pay the $$$ on wear& tear. I understand lift is sweetttt. But in all honesty it comes with a price tag. One simple thing that I didn't know when I first bought my 18 TRD OR was that the rear locker only works in 4L. I thought I'd be able to use it in 4H but after reading the manuel there's like one sentence where it says it's only available in 4L Aside from the automatic transmission still hunting gears from time to time, one complaint that I feel like could be changed via software is that you can drive the truck away (steal it/ take it out of park) without the key fob in the vehicle. I know this isn't at all unique to the Tacomas, Toyota and alot of manufacturers in general but I feel something like that is so easy to place in the software. The vehicle already tells you if the key is not present and the transmission locks you out until you put your foot on the brake pedal which has an electronic switch in it already. More of a quality of life thing and I know you could still manually lock the doors with the physical key but again just a nit pick. The 2GR engine has proven it's reliability in other Toyota/Lexus models well so far but for what it is wow does it drink gas likes it's nothing. That little V6 has a hard time pushing the truck along and at best its okay when towing/hauling with a moderate amount of squat. A weight distribution hitch strongly recommended for even coming near max towing capacity and an aftermarket brake controller under the dash is gives great peace of mind. Speaking of quality, Im not sure if it just because I do alot of highway miles but the paint chips way too much. All the way down to the bear metal

You can fix gear hunting/shifting issues by getting a manual :) I reserved a MT TRD Pro but my dealership could only get automatics so I went with an Off Road to keep my MT. Can't wait to get it in!

I had a 17 Tacoma TRD Sport Auto and definitely had issues with the transmission gear hunting. The truck should not drop 2 gears with only 600lbs payload (including people) because you wanted to speed up 2mph. Also driving in the mountains, I would lock out 6th gear because it kept jumping out of 5th for better mpg's, but then would drop speed so would down shift into 4th to speed back up. After a couple of times, it got really annoying. This was with ECT on too. Should've gotten a manual. I had the 3rd brake light leak too. Toyota kept the truck for a couple of days to clean it and get all the moisture out of the carpet and headliner. They also reflashed the transmission when they had it, but it didn't get rid of the problem, just reduced it a bit. Everyone's experience is different with these trucks though.

Will be getting a Tacoma soon and like you will have it forever and want your valued opinion on rustproofing and undercoating to keep it looking a long time. I live in the Midwest rustbelt. Is the Canadian company Krown underproofing product being misted indoor panels , rocker panels, etc the best way to go;( not knowing what product they use for this) ?? Zeibart undercoating uses an asphalt base and is thought to be best for salted areas I live in. Another option is wax base product some undercoating companies use. Please help with guidance on making right move to preserve my new Tacoma (soon). Thanks again for help on this important matter

Great video. U should install an oil catch can. It will keep your motor lasting longer. I have 2017 Toyota tacoma trd sport 3.5L and i install one. after 5 years i put 290000km on my taco and still drives strong.

Why not just keep some extra batteries in the console and change out the battery on the key fob when needed instead of swapping the internals back to the Oem fob? I just don’t understand the reasoning to do the extra work?

Due to the level of likelihood of working and urgency to fix. With your approach, the extra batteries might die. With your approach, after replacing the batteries how quickly do you need to get the 2nd set of extras after using the first set? Her approach, answer is never, no urgency.

I got a 2020 TRD off road brand new in November 2019. I have to say I have noticed some minor rusting on the frame already and I did undercarriage car washes during the winter months since I live in Massachusetts! So there is still their “Rust Issue” although perhaps not as bad in past years. I did not want to spray with protectiants just yet and compromise warranty issues but I think it’s gonna be needed soon!

Very informative and well organized video! I actually purchased a 2020 Tacoma TRD Offroad and I sold it 8 months later because I hated the way it drove. The nonstop gear hunting was a big part of it, but the main issue was really bad chassis vibrations. I took it in to the dealer several times, but they were useless. I liked the features of the truck and the long term reliability appealed to me, but it was so annoying to drive. That said, I've checked out all the other midsize trucks, including the new Frontier, and they all have shortcomings. I want a well equipped midsize long bed truck, which severely limits my choices. Sadly, I might wind up getting another Tacoma because it's the only midsize that has all the features I want. If I do get another one, I will do an extended test drive this time to make sure it doesn't have the same vibration issues the last one had.

@@dlg5485 yup my coworker bought a gmc with some options gone because of chip shortages. He’s been to the dealer 3 times and over 2 weeks to install stuff like heated seats. Heated defrost for the mirrors or back window. It’s ridiculous to buy a 75k plus truck and go back to the dealership 3-7 times to add options you bought that aren’t there.

Install a K&N intake air filter ASAP. They are guaranteed for 1 Million miles and need to be cleaned and re-oiled every 50K miles. They allow the engine to breathe easier. Have your Tacoma Tuned with the Overland Tailor Tune. This will STOP your Tacoma from “hunting for the correct gear”. This tune can also increase your mpg by 1 mpg.

This has been informative. You have done your research on the recalls and other idiosyncratic issues about the tranny. Of course most owners have heard the debate, but you really have identified what is subjective and what's objective about some subjects. Like you, I have not had any problems with the programming of the shift points in the stock version, even though I definitely feel it's different than driving a Ford or American made truck. I also understand they are engineered differently than a Ford or Chevy so I'm not expecting the same experience, but there was an adjustment period up front. Thanks for all you do! I'm subscribing.

I thought I would add something about the sensors. I got a leveling kit, and 265/70/17 after taking my truck through snow and having about 200lbs of snow packed under my truck the sensors would work. I had to get them reset.

I just got my Meso Minamalist key fob for my 2020 tacoma tonight and was a little worrird I had made a mistake after hearing you say you needed to keep the shell of the original fob to be able to start the truck in the event the fob battery dies. So when transferring the guts of the stock fob to my new minamalist fob I removed the batery completely from the circuit board and installed everything into the new fob and tested and to see if I could still start the truck with my new fob without a battery in the fob and it still worked just like it would have with the stock fob shell. As far as I could tell the only transmitter chip in the original fob was the big chip on the back side of the circuit board that you have to transfer into the new fob. I didnt see anything that made me think I would need to put everything back into the stock fob shell to get my truck to start if the fob battery were to die. You might want to test it and see, I bet yours will work the same way.

One other thing I wanna add regarding the distance sensor in the grille, anytime you change the height of your vehicle whether it be tires, a lift or both, you should have your sensor recalibrated. There are companies that can come to you and do it or you can contact your local body shop and your dealer will even help you with that. I’ve already had a couple wierd experiences with mine after I lifted so I strongly recommend that if you decide to keep that feature that you get your truck recalibrated for that.

I have a 2016 and I have had the blower fan for the AC Heater replace 3 time under warranty and once out of pocket. The motor never fails only the plastic fan cracks and will not spin.

My 4Runner has a sealed trans and the dealer would not service it because it’s ‘sealed’. Now I’m at 180K miles and I still have the original fluid. Still shifts fine so at the point I’m just gunna leave it. I want to get either a Tacoma or another 4Runner for my next vehicle.
