WOW!! This freebie fix from 2012 solved my "Error 32" problem in less time than it would have taken to drive back and forth from the nearby Brother's repair shop. THANKS!!! The video glosses over the "remove cables" part of the procedure. For the Model MFC-9440CN: the larger white cable on the right has a blue plastic pull tab; do not try to pry up the plastic connector from the board! The other two connectors can be gently pried up from pins on the board.

You put this video out over 8 yrs ago, Kurt! And just now, today, I was able to fix the EXACT same problem with my, now very old, Brother HL-4070CDW! I was getting so frustrated with this thing. Your solution was a great lifesaver!! Thanks so much!

As a current IT guy that has been in the business for the past 16 years this video saved my rear yesterday; I made the mistake of not asking the customer if they wanted color or black and white so when I showed up with a B&W printer I knew I had to fix their existing printer. Thanks to your video I did.
@Graham_Wideman3 жыл бұрын
Yet another thank you -- I performed this same repair on the similar HL-4070, and the printer is now back in business. I learned that you don't need to remove the PCB (which you replaced at 0:57). Instead I removed just the solenoid to apply the tape. Also it was not necessary to remove the plate you removed at 3:27. So in summary, I unscrewed only the back door (3:00) and the paper guide (1:52). popped off the rear cover of the PCB (1:35) and the top cover of the PCB (slides sideways, slightly different than the one in the video), revealing the solenoid. I used a right-angle screwdriver to remove the solenoid retaining screw, to more easily get to the pad and stick tape on it, though that could probably have been done in place.
@DavidMarkun4 ай бұрын
I should have read your nice timestamped comments Graham before I did this job and eventually figured out the same things you did. I was reaching for my right-angle screwdriver when I thought maybe I could leave the solenoid cover in place. Yes, that works.

Kurt, I really appreciate your shared knowledge on the printer fix. It worked well on my Brother MFC-9440 Model. The repair center that I called told me to scrap my printer when I described the problem to them and they also suggested to buy a new one! Thanks for saving me from the agony. Cheers
@DavidMarkun4 ай бұрын
MANY THANKS! Your steps worked for my HL-4070CDW with slight modifications. My model has several additional multi-pin cables attached to the board that you removed from your machine to work on. I was reluctant to unplug those, and I realized that I could do your tape fix without removing the board at all, and without removing the small metal piece above the rocking/sticking door. So all I had to remove was 1) the toner drums, belt unit, and waste toner pulled out from the front of the unit, then 2) unscrew the two screws of the back door, 3) Unscrew the two screws of the back page control unit 4) Remove the small back black strip carefully; I broke the two vertical retaining dividers off and had to superglue them back on to reassemble 5) Remove the lid of the black box by sliding it left to remove (slide right to reassemble. Pick it up and look at its bottom before reassembly to understand the slide latch). If you want to check for this problem fairly non-invasively before you start unscrewing anything, you can check for rocking/sticking door by reaching way in from the front of the unit after you remove the three items mentioned in 1) above. I was so stoked to find that the rocking door was sticking in the back position! My generic advice for working on this machine is to look very carefully at the plastic pieces before you apply force to them. They are highly engineered. If you understand them, they will behave, and if you do not understand them you can hurt them. For example, reinstalling the back door, you need to hook the plastic pieces over the metal before screwing them in. My printer is 14 years old now. It has not printed many pages at all (never went through a set of toners) but it has lived in a warm humid environment in summertime. The two things that have failed have been the belt unit (recently replaced) and this sticky foam thing (fixed now with the amazing tape fix).

Thank you so much for posting this video. With no budget for a repairman, my Brother MFC9840CDW was a brick. Manual offered no help beyond turn off, turn on. The MFC9840 is somewhat different that the 9440 shown in the video, but mostly comparable and the solution has worked great!

10 years later, and this is still useful; my MFC-9840CDW gave the message 'Unable Print 32', but the manual was no help, and nor was the Brother advice online. Then I found this, and my printer and scanner is working again (I never used it as fax). I didn't have to throw it away after all, which is what my wife advised. (So; one up there.)

Thank you, this fixed the issue for me! I felt a little silly taking my printer apart until I got the little door and realized that it was indeed sticking. The scotch tape resolved the issue. MFC-9840CDW. This video, though old, is still helping people. I watched this video a few years ago when I first got the error 32 but a little cleanup did the trick back then. This time I knew I had to get inside the printer for sure. The little foam bit was indeed sticky and the tape trick fixed it right up. Thanks a bunch! Didn't want to scrap the printer and buy a new one-especially since I just replaced all of the toner cartridges.

Fix worked for me! I was able to remove the metal cover from the solenoid and door assembly without pulling the whole circuit board out, and apply the piece of tape with tweezers, but it was invaluable to see your fully disassembled video to understand how everything was laid out. Just printed a 24 page document without error - you saved my printer!

Hi Kurt. Thanks for the video. It was a great help and the printer is working again. I had the error for a few months and cleaned and checked all over for stuck paper and labels, as on the Brother site, but found nothing, till you showed how to open the rear. I opened the panel and found a piece of the sponge strip had lifted, possibly causing the obstruction. Your video showed me how to get to this other part of the printer.
@royprasad84278 жыл бұрын
Marvelous! I had the exact same problem and I was getting ready to dump my printer. I followed the instructions here, which were very clear, and now, my printer is working again. Thank you, Kurt. If I may make a few additional points: First, be VERY careful with the little screws as you are removing or reassembling the pieces. It is all too easy to drop a screw or two inside the printer, and it won't be easy to retrieve a lost screw from somewhere on the floor of the printer. So be just be very careful with the screws. I also would highly recommend using screwdrivers with magnetized tips. Second, you ONLY need to unplug the four red plugs at the end of the wires that run through the channels, one 3-wire red plug at the bottom right and the white ribbon connector at the bottom right. Don't needlessly pull any wires that are all internal to the board. Third, be very careful pulling out the wires from the printed circuit board. The wires are delicate, so don't yank the plugs using the wires for leverage. If one wire comes loose, your printer is likely dead. Use a long thin screwdriver with a narrow flat tip to gently pry out the two connectors at the bottom right. Use a pair of nose pliers to gently pull out the four red plugs. Fourth, keep a small canister vacuum cleaner with strong suction handy (e.g., a Miele). You will need to take out a lot of accumulated dust along the way. Fifth, I would highly recommend keeping 3-4 lens-cleaning wipes that photographers use. Any camera store will likely sell them. Use these to wipe the roller clean to take off any patches of toner material. Last, in my case, I did not have to take out whatever it was under the roller. Also, on the backside, I did not have to unscrew the top plastic piece. So my job was a little easier than the video above. Also, in my model, the black plate covering the PCB runs much deeper than in the video above. This piece gave me the most trouble - I didn't want to force it and break it. The best way to remove this plastic is to start from the right end, lift up the right corner a little, stick a screwdriver in the gap, then gently apply pressure until the black plastic plate pops out. Hope all that helps. Good luck! Thanks again to Kurt.

I have a Brother MFC-9440cn and a Brother DCP 9040cn. I gave my wife the DCP 9040cn to use at her job. Towards the end (before the business closed) the DCP came up with the error "Unable Print 32". This printer has been siting for over a year. I'm on disability and my wife still works but at a new job making about 1/3 of what she use to make. Times are really tight and I was hoping to fix and sell the DCP Printer. I have a Re pair Manual for these printers but everything they say to fix costs money, something we're short of right now! For some reason today I typed the Error Message "Unable Print 32" into Google and there was your Fix for the Unable Print 32 Error. I watched your video about 1/4 of the way and then started tearing the printer apart. It took me about 15 minutes and now the printer is working great again. Hopefully I can sell it before Christmas so we will have a few $$$ for the kids and grandkids. This printer only has about 48,000 pages on it whereas my 9440 only has about 6,000 pages. Thank you very much for the video, sure wish I had some money to donate to the cause!

Awesome fix!. If the fix doesn't work try this next step. Check to see if the spring on the sensor is in the right spot. If the spring slips through. You just have to disassemble as in this video and then unscrew the sensor and slide the spring back into place and it will fix the error. I hope that helps someone.

I used a piece of tape that was too big and it ended up causing the error again after about 6 months. This time I ended up not removing the electronics board and removing the shiny part with the sticky pad (with a right angle ratcheting phillips screwdriver) and removing the pad entirely. So far so good.

Good video. Concept worked on my 9840CDW also, but I found an easier way: If you remove the whole drum assembly out of the front side, (with all the toner cartridges in it), and then remove the WT100CL toner catcher tray from below that, the piece Kurt mentions is kind of exposed in the rear bottom of the now open area. I sprayed a little compressed air at/around it, moved it with my fingers -- it seemed pretty loose and not sticking, although I think I could have put tape on it in the location he indicated from that angle if I had too. After I closed it all up, the "32" error was gone but I got the Drum Error (with 20% life left), so I had to remove the whole drum/cart assembly again (be careful not to let the shiny transfer rollers touch anything), remove all four carts, and then go through each of the four drum slots, unclipping the two plastic catches at either end, opening (folding up/back) the whitish plastic cover, blowing in some compressed (canned) air, sliding the green tab from left to right and all the way back again, then more air, then reclose the white door/lid and click both ends down correctly. After doing all four, I put the toner carts back in, slid the drum/cart assembly back in, and away she goes, like new again. I bought it for $200 years ago like new from a company that was baffled by an obscure error message and just tired of looking at it. Fixed it in 15 minutes when I got it home using internet lore. It's a bit finicky and sloppy when using cheaper reman'd toners, but overall, worth every penny I have in it. I'm sure there are videos on doing all the steps I mentioned so I'll leave it at that. Brother owners unite, you have nothing to lose but your deviously early "out-of-toner" printer shutdowns.

Thanks!!! This worked for my MFC-9840CDW. The only additional step for the MFC-9840CDW is that you have to take out the toner carrier and the belt to be able to actually remove the back slide-into-place cover, both of which are obviously easy to do (at least, I don't think your video indicated that you had to do that in the case of the MFC9440). You are the best man. I just did and it works. I was skeptical at the beginning. Technician informed me about $170 charge if he comes so i guess I got lucky this time hehe. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for posting. Resolved error 32 on by HL 4070CDW and allowed me to avoid buying a new laser jet for the price of a small piece of electrical tape.

Awesome! Worked on my HL-4070CDW! I just had to first remove the toners from the front instead, and whatever is on the left for the MFC-9440CN is on the right for the 4070. Thanks again!

Worked fine for my 9840CDW. The assembly of this part of the machine is the same as for the MFC9440, only the PCB layout is different. The shuttter door is at the right hand side of the PCB, not at the left. Also, it seems to me to be a bit smaller than in the video. I'd say that Brother should have learned something when they re-designed the board, but that's the way it goes. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the great video. Just fixed my DCP 9045 CDN - the guts were the same so it was great. I let the 'boys' fix this same problem a few years back but I found they had stuck the tape onto the wrong side so it worked for a while until the sticky gunge built up again.

SHORT CUT For H-4070CDW (maybe other modles): You don't have to remove the circuit board or disconnect any wires. Just remove the back cover, paper guide, and the two plastic parts from the top of circuit board. The solenoid is visible and sufficiently accessible to apply the tape right there. Could not have done it without this video showing me the way. Thanks!

Thank you. I have MFC-9840CDW and it showed the same error message. I was able to put a tape without removing the board and it works now. Thank you.

Thanks Kurt, I have fixed this problem last time i had this error but it came back again and i checked it if the flap is sticking or not and it was not sticking at all. I tried many thing and almost give up but finally i found the fix for it. Actually, there is nothing wrong with the machine at all, my belt assy. was really dirty because of the cartridges were leaking so i just cleaned the belt properly with a damp cloth. After cleaning the belt, print 32 error disappeared right away. I just want to share this so it will help others as well.

Thanks a lot. Procedure is OK for a DCP-9045CDN. Note that removing the small black plastic cover over the board to be fixed is not easy. One has to slide it on the left side before pulling it out.
