If you go to Shanghai sometime in the future, I recommend 小杨生煎 (Yang's Dumplings). They are a popular shengjianbao restaurant turned successful franchise. Somehow they maintain their quality even with dozens of chains across the city. The shengjianbao skin is about a third of the thickness of the one you had in this video... as it should be!

I stopped here on the way out to Long Island. They are superb. I got the Kung Fu Xiao Long Bao and soup 🍲 dumplings. Mmm. I got lucky with parking and they only take cash. Maybe you can use a card if doing online calling? If I wasn't on a low sodium diet I would have eaten so many.

I just tried this place. I had the wontons in chili oil, pork soup dumplings, steamed loofah soup dumplings and the chocolate soup dumplings. I loved it. I tried getting pan fried soup buns but something was going on in the kitchen which was taking too long (I didn't understand why but honestly it didn't matter). Maybe another time I'll try that.

I had xiao long bao in NYC at Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen, and they were sooo good. The skin was really thin as well...transluscent, so you could see the soup through it. Omg. Soooo good.

The way you described the filling of the chocolate soup dumpling reminded me of my mom's chocolate gravy. Apparently it's a Melungeon thing (a "tri racial isolate" group of the American south-east) that got out into the rest of the south. Anyway, like you said, it's not too sweet. A lot of people would expect like a melted Hershey bar, and even "chocolate gravy" now that it's gotten out, tends to be way sweeter than it should be when made by outsiders. I'd love to come to NY and compare the taste of our chocolate gravy to those chocolate soup dumplings. We eat chocolate gravy with biscuits, but I bet it'd be perfect with Chinese fried dough! And yeah, that first taste seemed to turn you into a kid for a second lol.
