It is a practice for removing obscurations from your mind, such as fear, jealousy, anger and ignorance. It uses elements present in the mind to 'scare' them away.

Dears, I hope it's appropriate here to quote the great Patrul Rinpoche, who in turn paraphrases the venerable Machig Labdron on Cho in his "Words of My Perfect Teacher": Direct all your practice inwards and mobilize all your strength, skill and powers against the belief in a self that dwells within you. To say, "Eat me! Take me away!" once is 100 times better than crying, "Protect me! Save me!" To offer yourself as food to 100 spirits is better than calling on 100 protection deities for help.
