What's the mechanism whereby the situation of a whole bunch of property owners suddenly being underwater, and the bottom dropping out on rents, and then that leads to higher consumer prices? It seems like middle class people would have less discretionary money to spend, and so their pressure on consumer prices would be reduced. Poor people who negotiated lower rents would have more money, but enough to cause so much food price inflation? There were floods in rainy season, and typhoon damage, but those are a matter of degree, maybe slightly worse than normal, rather than new phenomena, weren't they? There some global inflation, due to the Russian war (that area was a breadbasket area), and ship rerouting due to shipping attacks near Yemen, and new realizations during the quarantine. Is it all of that, AND something else? If so... what else?
@t-pnaminami38089 күн бұрын
@@GizzyDillespee Most middle class aren't rentiers, they are debtors paying off an apartment that has crashed in value. So the cost of living crisis is debt repayment, plus interest on debt, plus low wages and employment. The deflation + cost of living crisis happened because everyone there is broke and there's no demand. Luxury goods markets are already collapsing, rest will follow.

Explanation GDP growth The CCP has stated that China's GDP is growing and is expected to surpass 130 trillion yuan ($17.7 trillion) in 2024. Skepticism Some have questioned the accuracy of China's official GDP numbers. Alternative metrics Some experts have used alternative metrics to get a better handle on China's economy. Li Keqiang Index The Li Keqiang Index is a proxy metric that uses electricity consumption, railway cargo volume, and bank lending to gauge the economy. Overstated growth Some argue that GDP growth has been overstated by 3 percentage points for each of the past three years. Related facts China is the world's second largest economy. It's actually difficult to say which method of government handouts/subsidies is worse. Direct handouts to citizens tends to increase inflation rapidly, but the increase is relatively contained given the limits on average consumer spending capacity; on the other hand, handouts/stimulus/subsidies to local governments and institutions (i.e. not individuals) tends not to increase inflation rapidly, but the limits on inflation increase tends to be limitless because government agencies are not limited in their spending capacity or authority.

What is being referred to here is the velocity of money. Economists like it when the velocity is high i.e money changes hands fast. Unfortunately that only happens when people have confidence in their ability to earn more money. If they don't, they hang on to it for understandable reasons and put it under their mattress. Here in the US do we generally not have that problem too much. Our economy is mostly domestic. We are not dependent so much on exports like the Chinese.

China boasts a rich cultural history spanning 5,000 years, yet throughout this time, the nation has struggled with widespread corruption. This issue is well-documented by neighboring countries and historical trade partners that have interacted with China or its various dynasties. Over the centuries, China has often relied on external help from Persians, Turks, and Malays to manage its affairs. Simply urging people to spend more is not a sound fiscal policy. There is no magic formula here. With 1.45 billion people being told that things will improve, it often ends up being the same old story; The leadership has a house in Paris and left with the stimulus package. You think it's cheap to payoff 3,000 representatives in the great hall...they all have to eat.
