Tanning used to be a sign of wealth since only rich people could fly from northern US/Europe to the south to the “darker” during winter holidays. +Izzysaurus Z How are beauty standards formed? They are formed based on prejudices. Dark skin has been considered unattractive because dark skin is looked down on. So black people are almost always considered unattractive. That is built by a racist system darling. Systemic racism is real. Beauty standards are formed by that. In Korea, dark skin is associated with people who do hard laborious work outdoors, while pale skin is associated with wealth because people who spend time indoors don't have to do hard work outdoors. Pale skin is considered pure, while dark skin is considered rough and dirty. But this class system in itself is prejudice. Why look down on people who do hard work outdoors? Natural Sun is healthy and healing. Pale skin could look just as gross as dark skin if you have been taught that way.

Amber Sainsbury You'd be surprised. In Korea (same with Japan and probably all of South East Asia), skin color matters A LOT to the overwhelming majority of people. When a girl goes out you cannot imagine the amount of sun block she uses. She puts on sunscreen, goes to school. Gets there, puts some more. After school, puts even more and walks home. Of course this isn't everyone, there's still those people that don't give a crap at all, e.g me. And in case you're wondering yes, most Kpop artists do "abide" by this. For the people talking about racism, Asians preference toward white has to do with years of tradition where the rich stayed in doors and the workers worked outside. Hence, the higher class were whiter than working class. Just 50 years ago, Korea was a third world country and despite its appearance, much of its tradition hasn't changed. Unlike in America, no one in Korea goes out and gets a tan. They use umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun. Its culture and tradition but does not stem from hate like it does in America. No one actually thinks criminal when they see someone with black skin.

this is oversimplifying the issue of colorism in South Korea. what you said is not necessarily wrong but it's not the entire reason why pale skin, huge eyes, tall narrow noses and slim European-esque facial structure are considered desireable all at the same time. did you know some of the first cosmetic double eyelid surgery in Korea was performed by a white American doctor for Korean brides of American soldiers? there is a reason why having white girls is so trendy in Korean music videos, there is a reason why Koreans think pale white-mixed Koreans are automatically beautiful, and it's not simply a historical rich vs poor mindset. I agree I get very annoyed when white people say things like "oh they just want to look white" because THAT is also oversimplification from another direction but the influence from white American cultural imperialism is undeniable. for the record, BECAUSE of this same white American influence, many Korean people DO think black Americans are more violent.

+david yang you are right and wrong. It's true that in general Koreans feel that their desire to look whiter simply means by color and not racial whiter. But there IS ignorance against black people in Korea so I think it's honestly a combination of both whether or not any Korean would ever admit it. I lived in Korea for two years and I as a Black female never encountered racism but LOTS of prejudice and ignorance like oh you're black so you can sing, run, and dance. The treatment of my BLACK male friends by Koreans was very discriminatory. I had one friend try to get membership to the gym in his building and they told him no because of his skin color. He also could not get a taxi to stop for him EVER and we lived in Seoul in Daechi-dong Gangnam-gu.
