Steam trains are such wonderful machines, just the fact that they make various noises and gestures and communicate with you like a person about how they feel and how they are running at any given moment... sound like such a nerd right now but what can I say, just love these brilliant old things. :D

It's always the British steam trains that are invigorating and cool. They give off so much finery to the importance of running railways all together, along with the acception of diesel trains as well. I think I find it very peaceful and nice to watch Train Simulator gameplays to pass time and enjoy the fascination of trains galore. I dream of becoming a railroader some day, and I ain't resting for nothin' til my dream will come to reality.

Steam engines do not pollute the atmosphere as much as thought, the Carbon fumes are burned in the smokebox, expelling the carbon less black smoke. The engine is a Great Western ( note the copper capped chimney), and is a 2-cylinder 4-6-0. A 4-6-0 has 4 pilot wheels, 2'on either side/2 on an axle; 6 driving wheel, connected by silver rods; and no trailing wheels under the firebox. The Castle Class had 4 cylinders and were slightly bigger.

I didn’t know there were channels dedicated to this game! I work in Universal Studios, an obviously our Hogwarts Express isn’t a real GWR 4900, but I’m trying to work there and I’m getting into researching locomotives again. And now that Ive found your channel, my friends will never hear me shut up about trains.

Driving a steam train is fantastic! The smell is brilliant. The only thing you need to watch out for if you are a fireman and have the cab vent open is the whistle! Get ready to be sprayed with lukewarm water! Also the driver and fireman each have their own sides, and the fireman always communicates what is going on on his side including signals, crossings, people on the track etc. That is why the whistle also extends to the fireman's side. On the footplate if you were driving an actual loco, you would hear your fireman saying "board off" "crossing clear my side" etc etc. The drivers job is easy- Its the fireman that does the load of the work!

I live in the southwest (Plymouth) & in the summer periods we get steam excursions coming through all the time. You can't journey on a steam engine if you don't like the smell of steam!! That is what makes the journey that extra bit special, rather then that horrid smell of diesel fumes the smell of steam is lovely!!

Someone prolly already said this, but The pressure on right side is essentially the amount of steam available in the boiler. When it turns red, it's not getting too high, it's reducing (or being used at a faster rate than generated). Green means it's increasing The amount of steam pressure can reach a maximum though, (e.g. when idling) at which point you'll hear a release valve and the PSI will turn red even tho you aren't moving (to reduce the pressure to safe levels). Standard design feature on all steam engines. The key as I understand it, is to set the regulator, then set reverser to the point where steam is neither increasing or decreasing. Also, that echo in the tunnel is freaking awesome and I want this pack now. :)

I think the reverser actually changes the amount of time that steam is released into the cylinders, that's why if you leave it on 75% then it won't go any faster at a specific speed, since the steam is being injected into the cylinders for so long per cycle that it's actually resisting the cylinder when no matter which direction it's going.

Good stuff though I really like to do all the stuff in my 56xx manually. I noticed the blower is working automatically here- in real steam engines you need to open the blower while going through tunnels- forces air through the chimney and prevents building exhaust steam pressure which can cause a potentially fatal 'blowback'. Also- no mention of cocking the cylinders. If you let steam condensate in the pistons during a stop it can destroy them quite quickly. But I guess you know all that by now :)

The regulator controls the amount of steam from the boiler into the cylinders via the inlet valves, the reverser controls the amount of valve travel or 'cut off' So you would start in full forward which is actually 75% with the regulator open, as the engine picks up speed it needs less steam into it's cylinders, to much actually produces less power. So instead of closing the regulator, unless you want to loose speed, the valve travel is altered by screwing the reverser back to a lower setting say 60% then 50% and so on, so it's not actually changing gears as there are non but as speed picks up adjustment is made. I once read a book that described steam engine driving as akin to driving a car with the throttle fully open and adjusting the speed by advancing the ignition and in many ways this is what's happening. I hope this makes sense.

Hello Squirrel, your train simulator 2014 videos, in my opinion, are the best on KZbin.... I only watch YOUR train sim videos now!! :) Can I do a suggestion for a next video? I would like to see a video of you driving the class A3 4-6-2 Flying Scotsman, particuarlly on a London-Scotland line, not the whole journey of course as that would be a very long video. *any line would do though, if you don't have a Scottish line* Cheers, Keith.

The regulator alters the amount and therefore the pressure of the steam entering the cylinders, and the reverser alters the length of time the steam is being admitted per stroke, enhancing the efficiency of the engine. At low speeds, the wheels have little momentum, so steam needs to be admitted during the whole stroke of the piston, whereas travelling at higher speeds, the wheels have more momentum, so the engine can drive itself for a good proportion of the stroke of the cylinder, so only a little push of steam is needed on each stroke.

The reason why you have to but the brakes into self lapped is so the locomotive stops "blowing the brake off" (releasing the brake) and using pressure with the small injector.

I vastly prefer driving steam than diesel or electric. In a diesel or electric you have throttle and brake and they act in very boring ways. In a steam engine you have a regulator(throttle to some), reverser and a brake, and the interaction of throttle and reverser is interesting, the reverser is like how the gears work on a diesel it just controls your torque, but the regulator can't be used like a diesels throttle, you have to manage it, keeping a eye on steam pressure and building up steam by closing it on downhills and opening it for bursts of power. And if you choose to manage the fireman then you get an extra dimension in the boiler! You have to choose your moments to top up the boiler to avoid wasting all that based gained pressure by adding cold water, while avoiding the catastrophe of running dry, same for the fire opening the door lets heat pour out while you add coal but you need to keep a good mass of coal to generate power. Steam is a harsh but rewarding experience, and I love it both IRL and in train sim.

Think of the reverser as the manual gearbox in you're car. from a standing start you need lots of reverser(low gear). As you gain speed you can back it off (2nd-3rd gear). Once you're cruising along you can bring the reverser closer to the "0" setting( high gear).
@AT-zg4xs
@AT-zg4xs 9 жыл бұрын
Interlink Plus shouldnt bring the reverser that far further back than 20% (although i am taking here about real life..) but you are correct, in think of the reverser as the gears and the regulator as the throttle.
