Love your approach with pastels, especially layering!

Thanks so much Dee! My pastel set with Unison Colour is now available. I want the 36 colours to be all you need to paint but layering definitely comes into that!!

Thank you Gail! New subscriber, and new to pastels person :-) I find your videos refreshing because I don't have a giant room with room (or the budget) to collect hundreds and hundreds of pastels. Limited palette demos and thinking about travel sets gives me the kind of advice to put together a smallish (but useful) collection of pastels.

Fantastic!! Think about getting primary and secondary colours and each in a light middle and dark. Yellow and orange will pretty much only be light unless you go into a browner colour. You can get a full range of values with green, blue, purple, and red. Then build from there.

I have a Heilman backpack size box which serves as my travel, plein air, and studio box. I have a mix of Unison, Schminke, and Terry Ludwig as well as some NuPastel just for fun. No way could I decide which colours to take... so, I take them all! Lol Problem solved!

Exactly! How do you find the Heilman backpack size box? I'm looking for something smaller but would also need a tripod or another easel to use with it. What do you use as easel setup?

@@GailSibleyArtist I am just waiting for a new tripod to arrive. My old one just wasn´t strong enough, too wobbly. I have researched a number of tripods and after speaking with other artists came down to two tripods that work very well and will not take a mortgage aquire. ; ) They are both the same brand. The ZoMei Q666, and the ZoMei Z818. I decided on the Z818 just for the extra stable load capacity of 33# versus 26.5# . I love my Heilman backpack box. It does a fabulous job of protecting even my very soft Schminke pastels, no worries about carrying any brand. It has traveled many bumpy roads in Guatemala and Mexico as well as flights in my carry on luggage/backpack. Well worth the price. I also added the mid size easel for the box with 18¨ max. height. It was my main easel until we moved ashore last year.

Ohhh thanks for this info! I will have a look at the Heilman boxes at IAPS. Please let us all know how the tripod works out!

@@GailSibleyArtist Hi Gail! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. My ZoMei Z818 works a treat! The larger ball head is very easy to level once the legs are set. Just pop the box on, open it up and attach the easel. Solid!!! Spikes on the bottom of the legs work great, and retract into the rubber feet when not needed. Very happy and can't wait to get out and about. Will take a photo and add on...should have done that! Cheers, Val

I rarely travel, but if I did, I'd take a selection similar to yours.. It makes sense, and I can mix lacking colors with pointillism.

While I always take along my basic plein air colors on a trip, I do try to add a color or two for specific areas. For instance, I frequently travel to Australia to see my daughter and family, and Australia has a couple of particular blush buff and silver greens that I couldn't find in the States and struggled to mix. I stopped by an art supply store in a small Aussie town and found specifically formulated Australian colors with names like Australian Buff (that blush buff I'd been looking for) and predictably, Silver Green. If I was headed for Tuscany, I'd add some Quinacridon Gold equivalent in pastel, and maybe even that Australian Buff for those old stone walls.

Thanks for sharing your Australian story. Love that you found specific colours you saw in the landscape actually formulated into pastels and found in a local store! And I agree that if you regularly travel to a place where you know you'll need certain colours that may not necessarily be in your plein air set then by all means add them. My thoughts are more about second guessing what colours you might (or might not!) need. I love the challenge of using what I have even as I feel frustration!
