I have the St. Andrew Daily Missal and have had it since 2000. I don't think you mention this in the video, but I absolutely love it for the voluminous doctrinal notes. I am familiar with just a few of the others you mention, and it is still my favorite. As for whether or not the faithful should respond, the St. Andrew Missal does have certain responses in bold print to indicate that the faithful may respond. There was a limited tradition of response before Vatican II, with many faithful Mass goers following along in the missal and at least whispering responses. Nothing wrong with that, so far as I can see--this is true "assisting at Mass," which is the old expression that I like very much.

I have a 1960 St. Joseph missal and a 1961 Marian missal and their pages look almost identical to the ones you showed. Both books only have the mass with Latin and English, the rest of the books are English only. The St Joseph has always been my favorite. It has lovely full page color photos.

Does the Saint Joseph missal, when celebrating certain feast days, have that part of the mass in English and Latin? What about Christmas, Easter and other parts of the year? does it also have the daily readings?

Thank you, Paul, for this informative video! The Missals that were left over from both of my late parents were the exact one you said to stay away from, the St. Joseph V II version. I am studying as much as possible, so I can fully understand the Traditional Mass, as I’ve chosen to start attending the Tridentine Mass. I’m totally disheartened by changes made by Jorge B, but in studying ,, I’ve discovered that the Mass of my youth was the Novus Ordum Mass (I’m 50...)! Now, when I go to purchase a Missal, I’ll have some semblance of knowledge & I can properly chose one that will guide me through the Traditional Mass. The next step after purchasing a new Missal will be purchasing a veil! :-)

Nice. Something I find disjointing about the Fr. Lasance is how it flips columns from English to Latin being on opposite sides on the different pages. It was very helpful how you compared that St. Andrew reprint with your 1945! I didn't even know the people replying was allowed until this video, so very helpful all around. thanks

Regarding dialogue mass: When I was in Catholic school we were taught to respond as the altar boys did, which is how I learned Latin. Very few adults would respond at mass, but the school children certainly did. When I first began attending mass at SSPX, I noticed I was one of the rare ones who responded. No one told me I shouldn't, so I continue to do so. I remember the nuns telling us our response helps keep us focused on the mass instead of daydreaming.

I really like The Cathedral Daily Missal it has many prayers and devotions and also has beautiful colored pictures of the ordinary of Mass. I also like how it includes the old rules of fasting and abstinence. I'm not a big fan of the reprints, because they seem to cost more and aren't made as well the used ones. Eventually all of the used one's will be gone...

I believe the notations about the dialogue mass was left out of the new copy because the dialogue system is common practice and has been since the 1930s. When the 1945 book was printed, the practice was still new and it still needed to be explained. Today, it is not necessary. I have a small early 1950s SUnday missal that briefly mentions the dialogue mass. I had no idea what it meant until I looked it up. None of the later missals mention it.

A word about the Saint Joseph missals. Any edition made from 1957 onwards will have the more modern translation. If you want the older translation, get one made from 1956 or earlier. The 1955 Saint Joseph missal is interesting, it still has the pre-1955 Holy Week, but has the updated Mass rubrics. 1956 has the new Holy Week, but older translation.

Additionally, I'd say if you go to the TLM once a week, settle on a Sunday Missal instead of a Daily one. I believe there is one available for purchase at www.cantius.org/webstore/1962-missal-my-sunday-missal.html. It's only about $25. And it's a pocket missal, which is a bonus. The only disclaimer I'd make is that the epistle and gospel for Sunday Mass are only in English, not Latin. The rest of the prayers are in both Latin and English.

Wow, what a magnificent Missal collection 🤗 !!! Thank you for this comparison, very interesting and helpful. My go to is the Fr. Lasance Daily Missal reprint. Currently on the lookout for a vintage one though. Love the Latin next to the English, it's very easy to follow along and helps to improve fluidity in Latin. The illustrations with explanations are wonderful as well, the more the better (imo)! I hear the St. Andrew may have more illustrations but overall the Fr. Lasance feels more complete/ has the most to offer. Does your St. Andrew have more illustrations than the Fr. Lasance? I was not sure if you had a vintage Fr. Lasance and a modern reprint in your collection? If you do, are there any differences between them or is the modern reprint an authentic reproduction of the original? Another question, do you have any vintage Catholic, pre V2, prayer books, like the Fr. Lasance prayer book or others which have the Latin and English? How much did it cost to have your Missal rebound? That's something I'd be very interested in. Hope to hear back from you, Thanks again!🕊🙂🌟

Thank you for your questions. "Does your St. Andrew have more illustrations than the Fr. Lasance?" - Yes, the Saint Andrew daily missal has illustrations for every Sunday and Feast days. "are there any differences between them or is the modern reprint an authentic reproduction of the original?" - The reprint is an authentic reproduction with added items which are stated on page 7 of the missal. "do you have any vintage Catholic, pre V2, prayer books, like the Fr. Lasance prayer book or others which have the Latin and English?" - I do have some like the Key of Heaven, Blessed Be God, and My Prayer Book by Father Lasance which has some Latin. "How much did it cost to have your Missal rebound?" - The rebind was $145 and was done by Leonard’s Book Restoration. I am very happy with the quality of their work.

Hi Paul - really helpful video! Quick couple of questions: Regarding the St. Paul Missal - there is a version of the St. Paul online today - about 2,600 pages. Is that the same (only newer) Missal as the one you displayed? (I think I read on here that your St. Paul Missal was a late-1950s edition?) - Does the St. Paul Missal include BOTH Latin and English for a large part of the Proper(s)? The missal I am looking for would be minimally pre-1960 rubric (pre-1955 would be even better if possible) - and I would like as much of the daily/Sunday/feasts, etc. Propers as possible to include the Latin (as opposed to the missals where the readings and prayers are English only). Do I understand that the St. Andrew (1945-edition from St. Bonaventure) includes Latin in a significant part of the Propers? Much appreciation and thanks for any guidance you can give me! God bless you!

Hello, thank you for your question. Regarding the St. Paul Missal - there is a version of the St. Paul online today - about 2,600 pages. Is that the same (only newer) Missal as the one you displayed? - The Saint Paul missal I show is a pre-Vatican II edition so it would not be like the ones sold on the online shops as those would be for the Ordinary Form of Holy Mass. Does the St. Paul Missal include BOTH Latin and English for a large part of the Proper(s)? - The one I show does have both Latin and English. For what you are looking for the Saint Andrew reprint from Saint Bonaventure Publications or the Father Lasance reprint from Preserving Christian Publications will contain everything you need.

I'm also looking through the various Latin Mass missals as well. I don't want to overcomplicate things for myself, so the three Missals I'm focusing my attention on are Baronius, Angelus, and Fr. Lasance. From what I've seen of the Baronius Press Missal that I do like is the size of the font for the Ordinary of the Mass as well as the white paper it's printed on. My quips with that one are the size of the Latin text in comparison to the English in the Propers of the Mass. The Angelus Press appears to be somewhat similar, though many have praised its durability and longevity, in comparison to the Baronius Press. The Fr. Lasance Missal was recommended by Dr. Taylor Marshall for its ease of use and plentitude of illustrations. (No need to flip back and forth like in the Baronius or Angelus). The only issue is that it was last reprinted in 1945 with small additions being made up until the end of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII. Having said all that, I am still lost. They all seem like good missals. I'm having a hard time picking one for purchase.

The St Joseph missal translation was changed in '58 or '59. I detest the translation, personally. I had a precious '57 version I used for some years and foolishly gave away. I just recently got another '57 Sunday missal and I am at peace again! I bought several '59 versions not knowing any better. If you are familiar with the beautiful rendering of the Lavabo in the '57, always check here to see if the translation is that "good" one or the "bad" one from '59.

I use the Fr. Lasance reprint and St. Andrew Missal. The Fr. Lasance is a bit more user friendly. The St. Andrew is pre-1954 changes, plus it has lots of great prayers in the back. I don’t like the 1962. You can see the English translations getting more simplified, plus it has the changed Easter week and no faithful’s confetior. My favorite is my grandmother’s 1923 Fr. Lasance Complete Missal.

@mariekatherine5238
@mariekatherine5238 2 жыл бұрын
@@seppe1701 Fr. Lasance is user friendly without being simplistic or lacking in depth. It comes with a plan of study of both the Mass and the epistles and gospels. The print is slightly larger than that of the St. Andrew, easier on the eyes! I particularly like the short biographies of the Saints or feasts for each day. St. Andrew is written assuming the reader has familiarity with Latin. The English is slightly archaic in places and is in the style of writing from the late 1800’s. Some people, particularly young adults have difficulty understanding the style, although I do not find it problematic. It includes some features not in the Fr. Lasance such as Compline and Vespers with music for Gregorian chant. It is more compact in size due to the smaller, closer print and thin paper. Both missals are excellent, IMO, however, I prefer the Fr. Lasance for everyday use, one of the main reasons being the larger print. I’ve made slightly enlarged photocopies of Vespers and Compline from my St. Andrew missal and keep them in the back of the Fr. Lasance. It’s really a matter of personal choice. Both are pre-Pius VII, 1954 changes, and are equally doctrinally sound.

@@mariekatherine5238 hi Marie. Thanks so much for your detailed reply - very nice of you. Does the Fr. Lasance missal not easily lay flat when opened? I.e. can it stay open hands free or do I have to hold it open? Does it have the breviery prayers in either of the missals? I'm kind of swaying towards the Fr. Lasance missal but just wanted to be sure. Also, is it best to purchase an old print? It seems that there are certain rubics missed out or changed in the old or new prints of the St. Andrew missal. The Fr. Lasance missal - do I have to flick between the proper and the ordinary or is the ordinary flowing with each day's mass?

@@seppe1701 Fr. Lasance is easier to hold open and the binding is better, especially if you get the real leather cover. It has gold gilded page edges. (It’s worth the extra money.). St. Andrew is cardboard covered with black cloth. The page edges are dyed red. It is not as sturdy and is harder to keep open. Both missals require flipping pages, but the Fr. Lasance has six sewed in page markers of different colors and is arranged so that it can be easily set up in advance of Mass. St. Andrew has two attached page markers, one red, one yellow. hi and hello i started attending mass through the FSSP in my area. I use the Bonavenure press Andrews missale and i always wondered about those gaps im the printing. I do like some dialog. Paul Flores Photography thanks for the replie!!! Id like to mention i think its also the tone too. Peoples response, if there is should be in a subbdued tone/church voice as if your saying something alloud just for yourself or someone next to you. Post vatican 2 the tone of the peoples response id say is an elementary school reciting the Pledge of Alligance before class. Cadenced and crisp. Thats a theory i have to maybe why it was ommited in the reprint.

I'm curious, you seemed disappointed with Saint Bonaventure Publications leaving out the notes for a Dialogue Mass in their reprint of the 1945 Saint Andrew Daily Missal, what is your disposition of the Dialogue Mass itself? Also, do you use the Father Lasance often or is there one that is more of a staple Missal fit to your liking, you have mentioned the Lasance Missal already I'm just curious which Missal you actually use frequently.
@PaulFloresPhotography

Hello, thank you for your question. I am not really disappointed, it is more that they state on the website that it is a reproduction of the 1945 missal where it should state that it is a edited reproduction. I do think that as long as there is a server on the altar there should be no need for the laity to respond. I use the 1956 Father Lasance, the Angelus Press Missal, and the 1962 Saint Andrew Missal with the Lasance used most frequently.

I understand the Dialogue Mass was used primarily in Germany and France, and hardly (if at all) in the English diaspora. I also enjoy the 1962 edition put out by Baronius Press. It's my understanding that both the Angelus and Baronius editions are based on the New Marian Missal. I typically use the Lasance Missal but, I love the explanations in the 1945 reprint of the Saint Andrews. Thanks for sharing, PAX.

How did you find the Fr Lasance Missal vs the St Andrews Missal I've heard some people say the hardcover in the st Andrews makes it susceptible to breaking. With the pre-55 Holy Week more common I am looking for a Missal with the older Triduum. Do those Missal shave the commons of saints and various votive Masses that you get in the Angelus Missal? Moreover what do you think of the St Edmund Campion Missal. I might get it for my dad as I know he'd like the bigger print is it very complete?
@PaulFloresPhotography

Hello Rafael, both the Saint Andrew and Father Lasance are great reprints. From the copies I have I would say the Saint Andrew Missal will put up from more use. The Father Lasance binding is just too tight and you keep getting the urge to pull back on the binding as text gets hidden in the gutter. These missals do have the common of the saints and votive masses as the Angelus Press missal does, but the Angelus Press missal will contain those up to 1962. Although the Father Lasance does include changes made by His Holiness Pope Pius XII ex. Feast of the Assumption of the BVM. I think the Saint Edmund missal is beautifully done but is only a Sunday and Holy Day missal and is very large. It is intended as more of a pew missal for the faithful.

What is your opinion on using missals put out by places not in communion with Rome? The sisters who print the Marian missal are sedevacantists. I only use a 1962 Baronius Press missal as it is the only one (to my knowledge) with an imprimatur
@PaulFloresPhotography
@PaulFloresPhotography 6 жыл бұрын
The Marian missal being a reprint stills carries the original imprimatur from 1960 and since nothing has changed, as it is a copy, there should be no issues. I have not seen anything in the Angelus Press missal that would make me question their intentions and not having an imprimatur is not an issue for me. Yes, the 1962 Baronius Press missal is the only DAILY missal newly printed that carries an imprimatur, but I still prefer the Angelus Press missal. For a Sunday missal, newly printed, with an imprimatur I would suggest the St. Edmund Campion Missal.

As long as it has a 1960 or 1962 copyright you should be fine. There are differences, the Propers are in english only and are titled differently then what you will see in other missals. In other TLM missals the Propers are titled as Introit, Collect, Epistle, Gradual, Gospel, Offertory, Secret, Communion and Post Communion. In the Saint Andrew Bible Missal the Propers are labeled as Entrance Song, Prayer of the Assembly, First Lesson, Meditation Song, Second Lesson, Offertory Song, Prayer over the Gifts, Communion Song, and Prayer after Communion.

Hello, thank you for your comment. I have both editions on the Campion Missal & Hymnal. It is beautifully put together and with the photos of both Low and High Mass it is easy to follow. My concerns are the weight, not a daily missal, and lack of ribbons. For a Daily missal the Angelus Press is the best, for a simple Sunday missal you may want to look for a used Saint Joseph Continuous Sunday Missal. There is no going back and forth between the Ordinary and Propers of the day, everything you need for that Sunday is there. I hope this answers your questions.

The Lasance missal has thicker pages. The Angelus missal also has notes about certain days of the year which Lasance doesn't. In fact, the notes and pictures in the Angelus Press missal are the same ones used in my old 1960 Marian Missal. Another note: Angelus and Lasance has the mass as well as all the collects, epistles, gospels, etc. in Latin and English. Did I fail to go over the St. Paul daily missal? No. I glance over it at 25:53. There were too many used missals, which would take a while, to do an in-depth review of them all.

I got my baronius it’s so confusing! Plus being a latin mass you’d think the latin would be larger than the English it’s extremely hard to read it’s tiny. I totally mis-ordered here :/ should have gotten the angelus..... It’s beautiful but it will take a while to manage it. Besides I’m a singer so it’s hard to follow along during mass anyway because you have your music to keep up with
@PaulFloresPhotography
@PaulFloresPhotography 5 жыл бұрын
When it comes to the size of the Latin text the Angelus press missal is about the same. Yes it can be difficult to follow along if you are part of the Schola or Choir. If I am photographing the Mass I will read through all the Propers before Mass.

The baronius has a lot of extra stuff in it that seems rather unnecessary it’s beautiful though it will take a while to learn it I’ve only been to two masses so far. I got this book to try and help me learn the logistics. It does have a handy sit/stand card inside. But eventually I’ll get angelus because it seems everyone likes it better and is easier to navigate

Why is the Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962 associated with the sspx?
@PaulFloresPhotography
@PaulFloresPhotography Жыл бұрын
That specific missal is printed by the Angelus Press which is a apostolate of the Society of St. Pius X to provide traditional Catholic literature and doctrine to Americans confused by the changes in the Church after Second Vatican Council and the introduction of the New Mass. You can find more information here - angeluspress.org/pages/our-apostolate

It would have to be the 1956 edition of the Father Lasance missal. I like the layout of the Ordinary of the Mass, the introduction to the Mass and explanation of the Mass at the beginning of the Missal, the devotions section, and the section on the Ecclesiastical Year and the Sacred Liturgy.

@@PaulFloresPhotography I'm watching your video on the 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal. It would be very frustrating for me to go back and forth in the Missal. Is the 1956 edition of the Father Lasance missal, or any Lasance missal, linear - as in no flipping back and forth?

@@PaulFloresPhotography Thanks for getting back to me. For all of them. I'm a Traditional Catholic and need a date before 1962. You mentioned one of them was 1962, but you also said it was "updated and revised". The "revised" scares me.
@PaulFloresPhotography
@PaulFloresPhotography Жыл бұрын
The ones shown have a imprimatur of 1962 or earlier excluding the Angelus Press edition (Roman Catholic Daily Missal) which does not have an imprimatur but does follow the 1962 changes. There are some revisions in the reprints of the St. Andrews and Father Lasance missals but that was only to add the propers to the Feast of the Assumption which was changed in 1950. I highly recommend the Roman Catholic Daily Missal - angeluspress.org/ or if you prefer the 1945 edition Saint Andrew Daily Missal - libers-com.3dcartstores.com/St-Andrew-Daily-Missal_p_2394.html
