Choosing a Mason Bee House

There are many different factors to consider when purchasing a mason bee house: The diameter and depth of the nesting holes determine size and sex of the bees; soft woods will warp and crack easily, allowing moisture and parasites inside; plastic or PVC houses will invite molds and fungus. Nice! Thank you for sharing! I use 11" paper/cardboard tubes (increases the number of females)! 11" helps me to fit 12" parchment paper as well as a liner!

Is it absolutely necessary to line the holes with paper or other material? Will the bees be happy with just the wood surface if I make a house from a solid wood 4x4?

See the answer to Stephen. Solid wood blocks mean you cannot clean the cocoons. Therefore when they emerge in spring they must dig out through a maze of possible pests, some of which will work to destroy the bee and also negatively contaminate the new female which will use that space.

You're going to get a lot of male masons. The tubes should be at least six inches long, eleven is ideal.

Yes you can use cedar. All good honey bee hives are made in cedar.

Honestly. Overbuilt “mansions” really. I’m sure thats why the owner no longer responds & their website is not active. At the end of the day, it’s a house for solitary bees. Nothing more or less.
