My favourite sequencer is on the JD-Xi, sure its massively limited, but it is so immediate and simple. I've never written so many bits of music so quickly. Obviously it is more for sketching out ideas, but its honestly brought back the fun into music creation and removes so many of the distractions that made software sequencing with hardware gear such a pain just to set up before you can even think about actually writing anything.

I gotta call shenanigans on only showing an MPC2000 as an example of "early MIDI sequencers". Especially since it's from 1997. Machines like the Alesis MMT8, Yamaha QX-series, Linn 9000, Roland MSQ-series & MC-series or even the MPC60 should have at least been mentioned since they came earlier (some by a whole decade).
@dianevrules
@dianevrules 3 жыл бұрын
I dont have an XL. 2000 Classic has all the features of an XL. MPC 2000 Classic is a superior MIDI sequencer to every "machine" that you mentioned. Including MPC 60. MPC 60 cant handle 1/2 the midi notes that a 2000 Classic can

I missed one element. Once your sequence is recorded you can start it from different keys, so it varies in pitch, you can play it higher and lower.
@justindelay
@justindelay 5 жыл бұрын
Some sequencers allow you to transpose the sequence in exactly the way you specified- by changing the starting note of the sequence based on the key you play on the keyboard. Definitely read the specs/manual if that is a feature you are looking for.

@@fritsvanzanten3573 Unfortunately no. Korg synths have a great analog sound, but their sequencers are very basic, except for the motion sequence maybe. I use Arturia sequencers (keystep and beatstep pro) to control Korg synths (not only volcas, but also Minilogue). I wish Korg learn from Arturia, because 16 step sequencers is a very limited option at these days.

Is there any hardware synth that can handle 8 separate 32 step sequences and stitch them together? For reference I mean the Final Fantasy Prelude. I’m looking for a sequencer that can allow me to punch in all those notes , stitch them together and play in the correct order, so I can then play the pads over them. Would absolutely appreciate any insight on this!

Great you're hyped about the Squid I guess? but you named only the MPC from the 90's claimed it was one of the first commercially available sequencers, which it wasn't, and then never mentioned the modern MPCs... Yamaha, Oberheim, Sequential, all had sequencers before the AKAI...

Can some one explain the difference between a note and a voice as far as mono,poly, paraphonic etc. Looking online is getting me nowhere
@spiderlab2526
@spiderlab2526 5 жыл бұрын
The note you hear is the voice. Yet it may be simple (one oscillator) or complex (multiple oscillators, filter, envelope, VCA, LFO) in how it is made. Hence our complex voice will be richer in harmonics and more varied in timbre. But at this point it is still monophonic. If we want polyphony (a note under each finger simultaneously) then we need to provide a voice per finger (read more $$ or Prophet12). Then there is paraphony where there are multiple voices but they share the same filter etc. See the Arturia Microfreak. Then there is multi-timbrality - see the Sequential SixTrak. Two articles here may help - en.audiofanzine.com/sound-synthesis/editorial/articles/a-mono-poly-game.html Whatever you do don't discuss this terminology online or at synth meetings as it can turn violent :-)

The squid has no song mode .. so it's pretty useless as a studio piece. Pioneer needs to clean up the toraiz projects. I was very disapointed with it's lack of "sequencer". It's pretty but expensive, and more of a toy than a serious center of a rig.
