I haven't worked with glass that much yet, but it seems to me that cutting bigger, rounder shapes from glass sheets is quite difficult... but I don't know, maybe you just need to have enough experience to be able to do that.

Thanks so much Patricia. You would need to have a round frame made be it timber or metal. If you bought a round frame off the shelf without a mirror, you would need to find a glazier who can cut it for you, many glaziers do outsource the cutting of a round mirror to companies that have a waterjet to give a precision round shape. You can score and break the mirror yourself depending on the size and that you feel comfortable with. :)

Hi, what is the material you are using in the frame? Is that card board? Did you have to get glass cut to fit the frame? Thanks

Hi Angela, the backing board was 3mm MDF and I generally cut new glass 3mm for the frame because photo frames generally use 1.5 or 2mm which in my opinion isn't thick enough. :)

brilliant tips; can't wait to try this. Thanks! If you were to use this same process onto the front side of a mirror with colored cathedral (transparent) glass, would it work? I love your finished mosaic.

Thanks so much. Im not sure what you mean by on the front side. But if you were meaning replacing the clear glass with mirror and adhering it in, I cannot see why you couldn't do it. I would use a neutral curing adhesive such as Soudal Fix All Crystal Clear or a suitable glass silicone adhesive. :)

Hi - When you talk about covering the frame with masking tape and plastic, what kind of plastic do you mean? Like Saran wrap or something thicker? Thanks, Jill

Hi Jill, Any plastic thats going to protect the frame while you grout, Saran Wrap may work but I was thinking about something a bit thicker like a plastic bag that you can cut up. :)

This was very helpful! I’m wanting to do a famed mosaic in one of my mother’s frames. They are very sturdy, but quite large. What is the biggest size you would recommend for doing a mosaic this method? I would probably replace the glass with the 3mm board to make it lighter. This will hang over my fireplace so I would probably attach French clear system to assume a level hanging.

Thankyou very much. I cant answer your question as it will depend on the finished weight, the thickness of the frame itself and of course the size. If you did proceed I would definitely reinforce the corners where the joins are so as they support each other and yes replacing the glass but you may need to go 5mm MDF depending on the size. The other concern I have is if its hanging over the fireplace how much heat will it get. :)

Would blue painters tape work better than masking tape, which as you point out can be difficult to remove? If masking tape is used and becomes difficult to remove, what do you suggest using to remove it? A bit of oil worked underneath, and then rubbed away after tape removal?

The first time I used resin I used masking tape and it just made it a it more difficult than needed. I avoid using it I use metal self adhesive tape or good old fashioned sticky tape (packaging tape) works well for me as long as its not on newly painted wood work but then that would go for any adhesive tape. Painters tape works better than masking tape. You can always experiment and see what works best for you.
