I think this is great advice. In hindsight, I think I could have actually saved a good amount of money by only buying ratchets on the tool truck vs buying online. The online ones were only slightly cheaper, though some of them seem to be of comparable quality, but I ended up buying probably twice as many as I need because I ended up not really liking about half of them.

As DYI person, I have the long handle 1/4 Snap On I love. My wife even bought me a second one, she won't admit it but she always asks for it when she needs a ratchet. For 3/8, I have four Snap On ones in the box that I use occasionally. For 3/8 I use the Craftsman thin profile USA ratchet 44995. I still have the 60 tooth gears. That handle is perfect for my hand. I have an extra one of those too. I really don't use 1/2 much, but the Snap On is my go to for that.

This is an excellent video, thorough. My favorite ratchets are Matco Flex head and Cornwell 72 tooth, straight contoured grip. I look at dealer support and the ability to get rebuild kits. My Matco and Cornwell dealers have given the best support in this regard. All of the tools truck ratchets are excellent, you can't go wrong from a technical perspective. Your personal preference and comfort comes first.

I have a snap on like that red handled on (in periwinkle blue!) With a fixed head, a snap on locking flexhead with the comfort grip, a matco locking flex head with a chrome handle, and a cornwell flex head with a chrome handle. The blue snap on is my favorite, but I'm not really sure it's because of the handle. I think I just feel more secure because it's a fixed head and I've broken the flex head about a billion times. When my matco broke at the flex, it took him almost a year to get the replacement because they were going through a redesign and weren't available 🙄. I don't use that one much anymore because we don't have a matco guy in the entire city. I do much prefer their locking flex head to snap on's, but if it breaks... 🤷♂️

Having three different style ratchets myself, snapon comfort grip and the hard handle and cornwell. My go to is the hard handle snapon. The reason is ALL of the soft handle ratchets are susceptible to the harsh cleaners and chemicals found in the repair industry. They get a gooie fell to them after a while and start to break down.

I totally agree the racbet you love is up to YOU! No one else. I bought a Marco rachet about a year ago to test out that locking flex because I thought it was a neat idea. Not long ago, I mistakenly sheared the teeth of the locking mechanism (not rachet head) I thought "oh man he will never warrenter this" so I put the anvil in the vice and turned and turned.... All I did was jump the vice, anvil edges worn, internals didn't break. Between that and the feel of handle, I'm sold on Marco!!

That matco ratchet is my go to every day as well, and for the exact same reason. That little lock is simply amazing on a flex ratchet, and I can't find any other brand that is like it. I have found some gearwrench 80 tooth locking flex heads with a similar lock but they aren't quite as good as the matco. My two 3/8 drive Matco ratchets have each been warrantied after 2 years. One got rebuilt but the other one had the locking teeth shear off. No big deal that's why I bought a lifetime tool.

I recently bought a few Tekton ratchets for in dash work and love the thin heads to get into tight spots. Even bought a 3/8 and it is nice but the handle is too skinny to be comfortable all day. Asked them about a comfort grip and they are coming out with them later in the year or next but in the mean time I bought a set of composite ratchets. Call me crazy but I love the fat comfort handles. I wish I could get the thin heads and flex and stuff with thick fat handles like that.

Now that's pretty much all I use unless I need to use a regular ratchet due to space limitations or something else. I couldn't believe I had waited so long to get one as it just made everything faster and easier. You should do a video on electric ratchets to go with this one. Then possibly an air ratchet video but I have a feeling air ratchets aren't too common anymore with electrics being where they are at now.

I've been using Snap-on ratchets since 1974 and only replaced one but I overhaul and lube mine PLUS they make breaker bars in every size & length so if you break a ratchet from misuse you know it. Their 1/4" extended long reach ratchet has been tested to 100 ft ls of torque so if you break that ratchet you are definitely using the wrong size. To each his own and all comes down to preference, hand size, comfort level, etc and if you like Matco, Mac, Snap-on, etc you will enjoy using it over the others. I have a lot of different size ratchets and know which one fits the bill without abusing it or use the one that I know I can't over torque or under torque the fastener. Having multiple manufacturer's ratchets is also fine b/c you might like certain features. It's all up to the mechanic and using a little Loctite on a flex head will tighten them right up.

My favorite ratchets are Matco without comfort grip, except for on my 24” ratchet. I have 3 Snap On ratchets: 1) very old 3/8” drive ratchet I found somewhere 2) 1/4” locking flex head I bought to see if I like Snap On locking flex design 3) long 1/4” flex head I bought because at the time it was the longest 1/4” ratchet I had seen and decided I needed that. I prefer standard steel handles in case I’m working in a tight area and I actually like how it feels. My 1/2” drive 24” long ratchet is my only comfort grip handle ratchet because that is never used in tight spaces. One thing that bothers me about that one is it’s the only Matco ratchet I own that is not stamped USA.

No obstructions or odd positions to consider, My favorite 3/8 ratchet is a 1990's 36 tooth standard length, comfort grip Snap on with Cheveron EP 2 red grease . My favorite 1/2 Ratchet is a Stahlwille 512 36 tooth comfort grip with the same grease, being no weird obstacles to overcome. I find a course tooth rachet with high pressure grease is smooth and lasts forever. I have a 17 inch Mac pair head also course tooth count same grease , they are reliable mules. Fine tooth rachets ,I use 100% Teflon grease very thin like a heavy oil. A little tiny tube is $60.00. But it really extends the life. How you maintain a hand rachet can be just as important as what brand you choose.

Matco is moving away from AJ, easy way to tell is the new ones are laser printed not stamped.(this started with the pink ones last year. Also anything else that comes in the soft foam tray made in the US comes from the same place.) They are being made in Ohio. This is the reason a few months back they had a shortage of rebuild kits and had a qc issue with the first few batches of paws as they were weak and would snap really easy.
