One lady in Ontario who got long covid and could no longer work went through all her savings until she only had one month left before her money ran out. She to asked for assisted suicide. How many more have committed suicide or asked for assisted suicide or are thinking about it before something is done. My heart is broken.

The max amount for 1 person on ODSP for rent is $497 , that is somehow supposed to cover rent , heat , hydro etc so anything above that amount is paid out of the measly amount that is supposed to buy food , toiletries , cleaning supplies etc .

I wish I had the MAID option here in CA. I had a 38 year career, a life, until an autoimmune disease ended it. I exhausted my savings, 401k, before finally being granted disability. ODSP is failing, and the Ontario Government must do something NOW to increase the ODSP rates. It's not enough to live on, after rent and bills. People just want to turn and complain about MAID instead of facing the real issue that WE AS A SOCIETY have created where there’s too much classism that exists, the huge gaps in the level of pay between the minimum wage earners and the wealthiest people earn, the types of homes that are being built, society has created this, it’s not about a piece of legislation, it’s about us as a society making life so based on income levels and who’s rich and who’s not and who can afford expensive houses and who can’t. There’s people whining about treating people on the street with dignity all the while they live in their rich neighbourhood and challenge organizations who want to build affordable housing in their neighbourhood. Such as with Vancouver, people are acting like they care about the people in tents on Hastings in the DTES and advocate to allow them stay in their tents, but then those same advocates live in neighbourhoods like Kitsilano where people there just filed a petition with the city to stop the construction of a subsidized supportive housing apartment building in the neighbourhood. That’s the way it is with so called “advocates”, it’s “let them stay in the tents and burden disadvantaged residents in a poor neighbourhood, as long as we don’t have to have it or them in our neighbourhood.” If someone who is homeless or afraid of homelessness consider suicide, that’s not on the government, that’s on society and what we’ve all created.

It's not easy, for people who are on ODSP to survive. People who are on OSDP don't have many options to choose where they want to live. Living in shared accommodations in a house is how people who are on ODSP would live their lives, or maybe in government housing. There might be people who are on ODSP who will say there is no hope. Choosing to not do anything when something can be done will only lead to despair. It's not like people who are on ODSP don't receive anything, so these people are receiving money. I think the problem is managing money. I personally seen how some people who are on ODSP manage their money, and it's not good how these people manage the money they receive per month. The people who are on ODSP choose how they want to spend their money. I believe the problem stems with an inability to do budgeting. Having extra financial help would be in the best interest, for ODSP clients, but, people who don't know how to budget their money might experience problems.

Average rent is $2000.00 per month. ODSP pays 1,600.00 per month. how do you make that work? Shared accommodation which a lot of landlords are not permitting. The place he lives now is being sold. Find him a place to live that is decent for a human being, who qualifies to end his life, to live in dignity, and he will choose to live.

I think it depends on where someone wants to rent a home, and what someone wants to live in. He is going to have to find a roommate, or roommates, and he is going to have to find his own place to live. If he cannot find, and have roommate(s) then he might become homeless. ODSP does not pay $1,600. ODSP should pay a little over $1,200.00.

You cant even find a room to rent for under $700 . That means anything above $522 they have to take out of their food /basic needs allowance and the maximum amount for that is $706 a month to cover food , cleaning supplies , toiletries , clothing , shoes , boots , coat , transportation etc the "grand " total is a maximum of $1228 per month . Explain how to "budget " and "manage" that amount "properly" ? smdh

Some meds make you gain weight. His disability prevents exercise to stay slim. Average rent is $2000.00 per month. ODSP pays 1,600.00 per month. inflation and rents have gone up but ODSP and Seniors Pensions have not increased with inflation. All of the rents I have seen in Affordable new buildings are more than I can afford. I hope you have a private retirement plan.. or you will be eating a lot of beans too

He's quite heavy. That's expensive to maintain. People do what he's applied to do, without the assistance, every day. HOW he's doing it doesn't endear me to him anymore than anyhow else would. I do not feel sorry for him. I doubt he'll go through with it anyway. He doesn't seem sincere. He's applied for the attention. If he hasn't, why are we hearing about it?
