Sober here since one year. The most interesting thing to observe is that once I mention about not having any booze, most people tend to become protective of themselves out of nowhere, explaining that their drinking behavior is not as bad or they do not over do it. It's in a way a socially accepted unhealthy behavior from which people immediately feel need to justify when someone else's decision do not align with their guilty pleasure. After all it becomes awkward and tiring to end up in situations as such and eventually you just end up staying home and sticking with your daily plans. Especially over the winter I felt the anxiety of becoming a ''boring'' person forever, asking myself ''so? okay you don't drink but are you always gonna be like this, isolated with tendency for antisocial condition?'' Because not drinking took the magnetic power I had in the drunk settings where I shone bright like a diamond! Later I realised that I was not boring at all, on the contrary, my laughters became more genuine, my conversations became more deeper and I entirely became a better listener! I also realised that small and limited moments with my fullest potential brain and body usage are much more worth it than long hours of dehydrated poisonous settings in which many do not get to experience their real selves. Besides these: I have a better control over my emotional equilibrium. I sleep better. I can handle negative thoughts better and show myself more compassion in difficult situations. I eat better. I feel better. My skin looks better. I realised that I actually can double the duration of the work out that I already have. I have more time, and more money. I realised who actually enjoy spending time with me besides drunken social settings. List goes on and on.... LET US NORMALISE SOBRIETY PEOPLE!

This is great. I decided to be sober minded in January also. It was no great revelation or anything I just didn’t see the benefit in drinking anymore. I agree with you and feel much better with no hangovers or that poisoned feeling when the body is processing the alcohol. Overall I’m sleeping better, lost weight, and just more productive and stress free. 🎉

You speak a lot of truths here and I can attest to experiencing the same. I’m Irish and it sounds like Denmark drinking culture is pretty much the same. Any time there’s a woman who isn’t drinking she’s rumoured to be pregnant. If a woman is actually pregnant and hasn’t told anyone she pretends to drink by putting tonic water in a gin glass so everyone thinks she’s drinking. My sleep is always deep sleep now I’ve noticed my sleep get better even after 6 months. I’m off it since 1st Jan 24 also 😃

Watching this, I am getting some hope, because I was a occasional heavy drinker which is not a very good idea of spending my late 20s. Now am starting my journey to sobriety. There will be some obstacles, but listening to some points that you have made here assured me that it is possible and it is waaay pleasant than drinking because it is "common" culture wise and so on. So big thanks for such insight on this topic and your honesty. Best Wishes from Poland.

something interesting that me and my friend did discover though is naturally that the 2 of us do not need to drink to enjoy each others company we actually can spend hours going to a coffee shop and chating about like you said goals or ourselves or what we are going through. we just chat about whatever is on our mind and we both feel amazing after.

Unfortunately, I'm a full-blown alcoholic, if I have even one beer something just "clicks" and I can't stop. The next thing I'll be drinking a liter of vodka / whiskey a days for months on end. It usually stops with me in hospital or at home trying to taper down off the drink so I don't get really bad withdrawals. I'm sober right now and have been for two months, I just need to understand that I can't even have one drink or I turn into a lunatic that can't stop. Not that I'm violent or aggressive when I drink, I just sit at home by myself, happy, but drunk.

Same in Canada, lots of pressure to drink socially. Some subcultures don’t drink though, so not everyone is expected to drink, such Sikh people, or people of East or Southeast Asian descent. I think I am getting invited out less with the drinkers, but now have other friends that didn't love drinking who seem a little relieved and the last time we hung out had a cannabis beverage.

Save your skin ( wine face becomes noticeable at young age ) …skin is an organ, so it’s one of the things alcohol also destroys ( alcohol is basically ethanol…BTW they put 10% of ethanol or alcohol in gasoline BTW) … alcohol when it gets processed by the liver turns into acetaldehyde, which then attacks the DNA 🧬 in all of the cells in all of the organs of your body…note: Radiation from an atomic bond, destroys the DNA and yourselves in the same way… Although more rapidly… It’s the same process… Your DNA is being destroyed… And when it’s destroyed It is mutated and turns into cancer

I'm now 28 days sober. I already went sober mid january - the end of march 2024. However, somehow I ended up drinking one night with a friend I hadn't seen for a year. I had so much fun. Then, I just fell back into the pattern of drinking. Also because I didn't have a specific timeframe for how long I wanted to be sober. I was just curious. I remember my mental health was wayyy better when I was sober. My energy was way higher and my memory was so much better. Now I've decided to be sober ATLEAST until januray and maybe even a year.

I still enjoy going out to clubs and raves like techno and drum and bass and koncerts. However, I avoid commercial clubs. its a complicated story for me. i feel like yeah here where i live too the more and younger you drink the better. at least that is what it felt like growing up as a teenager to a young adult. i am now 36 and well i accepted drinking as a late bloomer i think around 24 or 25 (but i feel like that gave me an advantage) i mean i also had another advantage of having a limited budget when i first started drinking due also being around the time i started my first job. however now at 36 its like many people have gotten over going out to drink constantly at least people my age and if they have not its just because they are functioning alcohics. or they just also just smoke weed as well. like in my opinion it feels like its a mess right now to try to be sober and expect to be able to spend time with friends unless you know these people from before. like right now i am in a spot where i can drink but honestly it just does not seem worth it like mostly litreally as i still feel like i am on a limited budget and cant afford it. i have only drank 3 times this year one was a work party(with an open bar actually) the second time i had a drink as concert and the 3rd time was at my sisters wedding but at the moment i have no idea when and if the next time i will drink is this year. however since i started drinking i have always kept track of when and how many times i drink since starting to drink but i also learned along the way i have had to cut certain people out of my life because they were too toxic for me to deal with.(due to smoking weed and drinking and other things)

Yup, it's scary how much space drinking and smoking take up in relationships with friends 🤯

@@sine_hansen yes I agree the same with smoking weed or even just smoking cigarettes. Like as I have grown older it feels like when it comes to drinking it's expected you do it as a teenager by the time you are an adult( which is weird) but also as you are an it's like you never drank or stoped drinking by choice or because you were an alcoholic people feel a bit uncomfortable with you however if you do drink and show sings of acholicim they feel uncomfortable with you as well( even if they themselves are are achoclics like) it almost feels like people expect you to be able to drink all the time without being an achoclic lol
