After living in Baltimore city and surviving a home invasion. Being on the end of 40 closer to 50. When this happened. I thought i was covered for any violent encounter. I boxed when i was young wrestled and took martial arts. The home invasion taught me training is important. They broke my arm and ribs. Pistol whipped me. The worst part was my girl yelling help an not being able to get to her. I wish nobody ever experiences this. It broke me. Mentally as well as physically. I moved to Florida for 6 years. Started getting in shape. I then went into martial arts. Filipino martial arts i lucked into. Been training in that and small circle jujitsu ever since. Now being said ive did lots of training with blades. You brought up a topic many don't understand is length of blade. You need to get through clothing. The best knife ive found are different for different environments and weather. My favorite for most is coldsteel vaquero xl. Its a 5in blade 13in of reach. Another great blade is karambit because they are next to impossible to disarm. They are also very heard to track with your eye. In other words hard to see. Some things you said i used to believe. When you train the weapon always leads. The saying defang the snake means. Fight the closest threat. Don't pass the weapon to get to the belly. Take the threat away. I hope something i wrote helps someone. I never want anyone to experience what i have. The home invasion wasn't the worst it was the final straw. Baltimore is a failure its not safe at all. America is far more dangerous then any 3rd world country. Not just the criminals but the system is broken. If you defend yourself in the wrong place and it goes public. Look at the marine in new york. Imagine my background with martial arts and army ranger. Id become the criminal. Our system is broken. Don't wanna get political but most know it. Sorry it was so long i kinda went on a tangent. Great video many need to realize America isn't America anymore. An its going to get much worse before hopefully it gets better.

I've been cane training with Master Gary Hernandez for the past year. The cane is a great tool and you can take it anywhere. And it is already in your hand-don't have to draw from concealment. Not a substitute for a firearm and knife, but another tool in the toolbox.

My choice is the Cold Steel Recon Tanto with a 7 inch blade. I think In a fight it's better to try to slash and then move away. If that doesn't work then the tanto tip will finish the job. This is what I normally carry around the premises and as a larger solution I keep a Condor plan A Bowie knife. Those two together are my home defense blades.
@hildolfrdraugadrottin72798 ай бұрын
I've got one of the original Recon Tantos back when they were still made in the US and they are great knives. I actually like the GI Tantos design better but they use a lower quality steel to make them. It's plenty good enough for soft targets. It's easy to sharpen the clipped blade so it's double edged. They are really low priced and fun to modify. Cold Steel makes the best affordable self-defense knives imo. I have several of their oversized folders too and they are awesome self-defense blades as well.

I can still look like a clueless lamb without leading on that I could take my attacker out without batting an eye

Agree, I'll take a Tomahawk any day over a knife. That being said, I can't conceal a Tomahawk easily. I wear my shirts tucked in and prefer auto knives for defense either OTS or OTF. I took thick cardboard and stabbed it with a knife and compared it to swinging a Tomahawk. By far, the Tomahawk slices into thick cardboard better than a knife stab. My Tomahawk has a 3-sided cutting edge and only weighs 10 oz. Much easier to maneuver.

One note, if you carry a folding knife, clean it like a firearm. It will get lint, dirt, debris in it and it may not lock when opened. I have had that happen a few times when I have inspected it. Do not use the defensive knife for cutting anything, but defensive work. You need it sharp and deadly, that is it's only job. You do not need a really large blade, a 3.5" will do it. Just cut to disable, cut across muscles to disable. Piece by piece you will shut the body down. Peace and Grace!
@2fast2block8 ай бұрын
I agree with you. Many years ago a knife seller told me that and I've followed that ever since. Leave one knife for defense as it stays sharp and in working condition. True too, it does not take a big blade. I regularly clean and oil my knives.

I typically carry the newer standard issue Victorinox Soldier knife with the locking blade and the Deluxe Tinker, but I also have a standard 7 inch Ka-bar with the rubber handle, and I sharpened the back clip section on it too. It's very nimble with the knife balance being so low, right at your index finger on the handle. It isn't a full width tang, but it's actually thicker than the "rat tail" end nub, which is trimmed down for where it goes through the end pommel - a lot of videos on KZbinrs I've seen don't seem to know that and think it's just that smaller section the whole way through the handle. It's actually about a half again thicker across inside than that end nub. Cheers.

The reason to lead with the knife forward is to intercept and have it be quicker, but yeah, you don't want it over extended forward like that, but at the ready. So for example, I could mess up your forward hand/wrist/arm before you can reach me with it, let alone your knife. Kill thrusts are a great measured option, but letting the wind out of the sails is a great deterrent. This depends on the situation though. Cheers.

A pocket knife is a utility tool. A knife has two functions, cutting and stabbing. I like Ontario Knife Company RAT 1 and Bestech Swordfish and Civivi Governor. I've always wanted a Spyderco Police, but I refuse to spend $100 plus on a pocket knife. Frame locks and liner locks are superior to slip joints and locks on the back of the handle. I almost cut off my pinky when I was 8 with a Buck 110. I will have a fit when I lose one, that was the reason for putting clips , keep losing and replacing (job security). Go to the river and you will find dozens people have dropped while fishing. A fixed blade is hard to conceal, but I do like Bowie and Arkansas Toothpick. OKC sp5 is my pick and Buck 119 or 120. Everyone seems to like spyderco and cold steel, but I've had horrible luck with those brands. A knife is next to last resort for defense. But still better than bare knuckles. Don't spend too much time and money on them.

Yes sir. Situational awareness and your basic instincts will keep you alive. I had to use my firearm twice in the civilian world. First time, seen the person approaching as I was sitting in car and had time to pull gun. Second time, was driving on a back highway late at night and a couple men in a car was trying to get us to pull over by swerving at us and attempting to run us off road. When I pulled the gun and they seen it..they left in a hurry. But situational awareness in both these incidents allowed me to be here today. Other lesson learned, was not being in locations where these things could occur. Good video and tips

What about the Paramilitary 2 as an defense knife? The blade is effectively only 3" long till the ricasso. Ricasso including the blade lenght is 3.25" of real length. I went with the PM2 version of the Ganzo 729 which has those measurements. It is 440C steel with an advertised HRC of 58. The Spyderco PM2 has the same measurements. I find the Military 2 of an better choice since the blade is an real 3.5" long of cutting edge and till the handle 4". I wonder if the PM2 has an enough long blade to reach all vital organs in an stabbing situation. Kidneys, Lung and Liver should be reached when stabbed from the front. Is an 3" real le ght blade effectively usefull or to short?

Now I don't have keys with the long bit - it's click to open and the key for the pick-up truck box is short! Again, carrying knives is illegal here. My daughter was training as a chef and wasn't allowed on public transport with her set of knives - we had to drive her to college! Definitely time for concealed protection even if they say pre-meditated. At least they won't expect a female old fogey with a sting! Thank you for the pointers - much appreciated! BIG thumbs up!
