I've been running a hang on overflow box on my 90 gallon and 35 gallon Sump System for 6 years now as well as on my 235 gallon aquariums. Both hang on boxes came with 2 lift tubes. I have never had a time when the tank overflowed. I believe this is because I bought the boxes oversized where they would handle double the capacity of the pump that was pushing the water up into the main display. So if one lift tube slows down the other one can handle the flow it's getting. I believe the key to anything working in an aquarium is redundancy two of everything!!!

I think he is not factoring in the sihpone strength. I have had air bubbles got through my J but they go all the way to the external part due to the siphon strength.

Great content. Very good consideration with tank against the wall. Exactly what I was thinking as well

That's nice if you can have a pre-drilled tank ready but most aquariums you buy in stores don't have drilled holes and cost more than the tank to have them drilled. I agree that hang on the backs are not the best but if you want a sump there is no other option.

Thank you for the informational videos. I watch all your shows and really appreciate the straightforward guidance you are providing. I can't wait to start my reef tank.

Great video Mark...I had a J-tube type overflow on my first reef over 10 years ago...my wife hated it every time it over flowed the tank... 😂😂 happened way too many times.

I got sort of lucky... found a 210 gal tank with two overflow boxes for cheap. Catch was that the front glass was cracked. I just need to replace that sheet of glass... I have the old glass out finally just need to find the funds to buy the new glass. We are not planning to have this tank up soon rather it is a slow investment so we can do it right. I am glad to hear that I bought well, jumping into a reef ready tank. I would rather jump up one level for a modest extra investment so the reward is a little sweeter with a little more simplified solution.

Quick question, Why I don't see people putting on the side wall the overflow box? Even if its external, now days you can use colored tubing which will make your tank look even more fancy !?

Where do you purchase the internal overflow towers. I can’t seem to find them

I really like those Innovative Marine Ext. overflow aquariums . I wish the back could be black glass instead of clear glass covered with 1/4" plexiglass . Black or smoked glass Can be hard to find . Especially that's not tempered . If only your friends over at planet could could find it & do it baby ! Of course I want my cut

Could you tell us which tower overflow is shown in the video? Very sleek looking. I have 3 inches off the wall for my eclipse but wondering if I could get more width on my custom tank if I went with that even though it takes a little internal space.

Great video! I'll make sure my external boxes are at both ends, so I can service them! Thanks! Wish you would have talked about advantages of external overflow which is that if a bulkhead seal leaks you only loose 1/4 of your water(Fish&Coral live). As opposed to a internal overflow with the bulkhead on the bottom which can cause you to loose all your water(Fish/Coral DIE!!!). Thinking I may put one circulation pumps just below external bulkhead. Have it kick on if water level gets below bulkheads and turn off GYRE Maxspect! Are there other advantages/disadvantages? Drilling tempered glass is a no no!!! Are there other fail safe thoughts to External? I have baseboard heater behind tank. So external overflow is no problem. Can you think of any concerns with NON-ELECTRIC baseboard heater?

Hello, I have been keeping a 40 gallon freshwater aquarium for a couple of years now. A friend of mine gave me a good 75 gallon aquarium and I'm thinking of going with saltwater. Do I really need a sump or can I use a canister filter

Hi Mark and everyone at Saltwater Aquarium.com I have a problem... my overflow box is leaking from the bulkhead on the outlets. What should I do?

what if you just hang the return pump to the right height that would only fill the tank more before running dry ?

Do you have any recommendation for a tank that is not drilled?

So the hang-on-back are the MG Midget of overflows, you need a hammer and a screwdriver, so every other time you try to start it, you can whack the starter! 😂

Hi Mark, I have the opportunity to buy a 215 gallon Mega Matrix tank new, buy I noticed a small knick in the black silicon towards the upper left side if the tank. The seller/store owner told me it is a non issues, but I'd like to know what your thoughts on it are. I did take some photos I can send to you if you do reply. I'd really appreciate the expert opinion.

So we got a 125g but it's tempered glass. According to this I can't use a sump.

What? So you’re saying that water bubbles will break an acrylic “U” tube on a HOB overflow box? Kinda hard to believe that.
@junito19573 жыл бұрын
dude you should not hate the hang overflow box today over flow are way better then it was in 2019 , no over flow is fool proof let something like a sea anemone see if you will not find water on the floor
