Oh, also another sharpening method is putting sandpaper on a hard surface and wetting it, then sharpening your convex knife like you would on waterstones. The exact same results, only difference is you don’t get a mirror finish and the sandpaper doesn’t last that long. I tried this method after sharpening my knife for 5 goddamn hours on King stones.

You guys have an insane amount of nice high quality knives. That's why I would love to see you both buy a Gerber Strongarm, try it out.....yes I said Gerber;) Steel quality is all about heat treatment, a good cook makes good food and Gerber's USA 420 is cooked just right. I have only three knives, I've sold my small collection and have 1 Mora Pro Robust, Condor Bushlore & a Gerber Prodigy. I don't have the Strongarm yet but will have one soon, but my Prodigy I kid you not ive been using that knife daily chopping and carving hard use for 8 months. The knife is 420hc USA and it's got a really good heat-treat, after changing the grind a bit it's been the best I only strop it from time to time. The Strongarm is only $50 US it's a better design than the Prodigy, give um a try it would be cool to see what you guys think, I love your channel by the way.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot mate! The only experience I have with 420 is from buck and a budget knife I have. I wasn't really impressed by buck's 420 but as you say it's all about the heat treat! 50% type of steel and 50% what you can cook of it! I own an Enzo O1 and while O1 is a budget steel the performances is like that of some ''super steels'' because of it's heat treat. I don't know if we'll be able to test the prodigy anytime soon but it sure looks like a very usable knife made as a work horse. Is there a version without the serrations? I use the start of the edge most for cutting so serrations are kinda a pain for me. Stay sharp! and all the best to you!
@Airik1111bibles
@Airik1111bibles 7 жыл бұрын
Dutch Bushcraft Knives The Strongarm comes with both choices straight edge or serrated, but just recently Gerber released the Prodigy with a straight edge. For new comers who might be looking for a camp knife/survival knife I would highly recommend them over the Mora's in the $30-$50 range. IMO the Strongarm is a better overall design sheath is awesome.

the swedish air force don't use the fallkniven F 1 anymore, because of the convex grind. They only used the first production line with the flat grind. The convex is very difficult to shape in the field, that's a problem for military use.

I don't want to be ignorant. Is it Martin or Maarten? My buddy is looking at a fixed blade. He really likes Bark River and and CPM 3V, but hears you guys talk a lot about Fallkniven. Massdop has some good prices on the Fallkniven F1s and it is VG-10 laminate. What is the difference between regular VG-10 and VG-10 laminate? He's drawn towards Bark River. Can you give him some advice? I think you'd go towards Bark River with CPM 3V. Let me know. He's a Vietnam veteran in USMC. He brought his Ka-bar over to my house and it still had dirt from Vietnam (1968). It had no rust. He never sharpened it either. Very impressive. We are way older than you guys, but respect your opinion. His use would be as a camp/bushcraft knife. Also I just bought a dPX HEFT Woodsman 6. Any opinion on that? I have a First Edge 5050 that US Navy Seals use. What do you think of that one? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm new to knives (1 year) and still bringing up my knowledge on fixed blades and folders. I'm an idiot that bought 90 knives in my first year. Thanks for your input. I love your channel.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 8 жыл бұрын
It's Maarten but google translate turns my name into Martin in english so i guess I'm both haha. Both Bark River and Fallkniven are excellent choices. All the fallkniven survival blades (F1 S1 and A1) are laminated vg-10. This means the VG10 is sandwiched between a layer of softer steel. This adds flexibility to the VG-10 making it less prone to breakage. Vg-10 is a really balanced steel. Decent edge retention, very easy to sharpen and stainless. CPM-3V can rust, holds an incredible edge but is harder to sharpen or strop. Both steels excel in their own way. I think, as he is a older than us he can really appreciate the semi custom feel of bark river knives and being able to choose from different handle materials. CPM-3V is our current favourite steel, together with the fact that bark river has excellent handle geometry I would say go with Bark River and CPM-3V in this case. Chose one with liners in the handle if you have medium to large hands. I don't have any experience with DPX knives but the sleipner steel is very good. It holds a good edge while still being quite easy to sharpen from what i've heard. The First Edge has a great blade geometry. together with the Elmax steel it should make a excellent knife. Elmax is one of the better steels available in production knives at this moment. It has better edge retention than cpm-3v. We are honoured that you value our opinion. We are young but we love what we do and we try to share what we learn. -Stay sharp!

Great video! Despite being into custom knives I also love the F1, fantastic robust and versatile knife. I have one question and a comment. Which make was that 160+Euro knife with the "supersteel"? As a comment on supersteels. I think supersteels are overrated :-) A2, O1, 52100, 80CrV2, etc. blades can be fantastic performers if the heat treat and grinding is done right. In fact these steels are very common among custom makers, and they can be blody good!
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
I do agree. Supersteel is mostly based on pure edge retention. I love O1 for it's balance but I dislike A2 (only have experience with Bark river's a2) it didn't hold an edge and was also kinda weak. MY o1 enzo performed fantastic!
@grunde73
@grunde73 7 жыл бұрын
If handed right A2 and O1 should be very close in performance (O1 being a tiny bit worse on rust). I have several Fiddlebacks in A2 (and one in O1), and they are all great! The steel in my Fiddlebacks are also notably harder than my A2 BRKs...

Great video guys. Totally agree about your point on folding knives, they have their place but in no way replace a fixed blade out bush. Why trust a knife thats already broken? I often use a spyderco for EDC but it gets left behind for a Mora anyday of the week when outdoors. Those Fallkniven Pro knives are so shiny, ive never heard of the Steel interesting, the next knife upgrade I think will be Bark River. Cheers from Australia

I heard they are 0.135" inches thick on tje spine. I like thin, slicey knives. Today I first heard of Fox River EXT-1 IN ELMAX LT 0.118" INCHES ON THE SPINE! Great reviews, but 13:34 Cocobolo is not a softer wood, it has a Janka hardness rating of 2960 which is harder than most woods you will ever come across. Desert Ironwood is 3260 so not that much harder. For comparison, Black Walnut is 1010, Red Oak 1290, White oak 1350, Hickory (one of America's hardest common woods) 1820.

Brothers, thanks a lot for all of your sweet talks and for all help. actually i'm really new on bushcrafting. After using mora companion for some time, as my first full tang real bushcraft knife i decided to buy an enzo trapper 95. which is not also very expensive. But now it is really hard for me to choose one of those steels. i was sure that i was going to go with "01 tool steel" bacause it is really easy to sharpen carbon steel(im also very new about sharpening with waterstones). But after watching this video, i think maybe i may go with "N690 stainles". So, i have two questions : 1. How fast does 01 rusts in a wet enviroment? 2. Is there any difference bethween the performances of two enzo trappers 01 and N690; if i get N690 do i loose any cutting capability? Again thanks for all off your effort. You helped a lot.

+baris ersoz hey baris, O1 is a great steel. It has better edge retention than n690 with the enzo Knives. Enzo does a very good heat treat on their O1. However O1 rust like crazy. It's on of the few knives i found impossible to keep without rust spots. I do love it a lot. If you go for stainless i would suggest taking a look at the elmax version. It has better edge retention than O1 and N690 and is stainless.

What is a good way to determine/learn what steels to go with for a survival knife/bushcraft I've got a few model moras I love them besides they don't all have a 90* edge on spine. But I'm looking for a one tool knife option long term that is great for the majority of tasks I know there is no such thing as the perfect knife that does it all but I would rather get a really quality one next versus 10 more okay quality...... I hate to admit it but my esse I had much higher hopes for but just striking a ferro rod on the grinned spine it gets nicks after just a few strikes.. may be good for other stuff but I like the full tang and thickness of blade something like the esse 4 with a better steel spine that can take many ferro strikes and I'd be happy

Great new videos guys! I'm also a big Fallkniven fan. The pro series are indeed great. Also, I love the NL series. They're just sublime to hold and to use and look at. I've been darkening the leather handles with a beeswax mix and they look stunning. Under close scrutiny these fallknivens, IMO, are as good or better than most custom knives...some costing thousands of dollars...so they are good value in that context. Not sure how accurate, but I heard that Peter at Fallkniven likes to carry the NL1 Thor into the Swedish wilderness!!!

Say Heah, What I like to do is test my conflict with Nature vs. Man. So I like to do solo's. I like people. But testing yourself has a mistique. So yeah, Lady Luck sat on my shoulder. So I bought a Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife. It has a O.D. Sheath and Attachment. I also bought a C.S. 3V Master Hunter thinking to team it with my Fox. But then I found out that Fox also made a Jungle Parang. very similar but with suttle difference. So I bought it, it came in Black instead of the O.D. Green. So actually my 3V Master Hunter will color match much better. So I got the Mora Kansbol and the Eldris in the O.D. Green. I also got a Black Eldris that I'll use as neck knives. But I also remembered I have a hardly used Benchmade CSK #156 in D2 but with serrations, But with serrations I can still make great curls making feathersticks. So that's another knife to go with my Black Fox Jungle Parang. But I also got a Mora Garberg for my Afternoon Delights when I just go out for some grilled butcher shop hot dog with mustard and onions and a can of pork and beans with coffee and a good cigar. Yeah M&M it just doesn't get any better. Unless your Afternoon Delights are different, heh heh heh, .,,.

haha that's a bloody sword mate. Busse is kinda hard to get here in the Netherlands. I would like to try INFI steel because I haven't had it yet but the Busse' Anniversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress is too big for our use. It should make a very sturdy survival blade for sure. -stay sharp!
@keithmckeith
@keithmckeith 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah true the Busse is a bit big and heavy, but I thought I'd try it because I live in the sub tropics and out of necessity some of my main heavy users are an old military Martindale Golok, a Svord Golok and a special type of big Australian cane machete. It'll be interesting to see how the Busse performs. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Pathetic how so many of your videos has over 100,000 views and only a couple of thousand thumbs up. I guess people are jealous. They will take the time to watch the video but not show appreciation. Either that or they are too stupid to realize how much it helps to give a thumbs up and comment. Great videos.

I'm currently looking for the perfect camping/survival knife for me and it's really difficult haha. There are so many choices it's not easy to find THE perfect blade. Moras are all over the place when you're looking for a knife and I'm still not sure if I should rely on one of those for survival. Something is telling me that their price is too good to be true and that I need to pay more for something way better. I want to buy one knife and then use that one for everything, for the rest of time (hopefully). So I'm willing to spend a bit of money, but forget about 400$+ knives, those are unfortunately out of my league. My max would be 160$-180$, but at that price I wonder if the knife that I would get would be better than the Mora Bushcraft Black for example and justify a higher price tag.

thanks mate! Elmax and Vg10 are pretty different steels. Elmax is mainly edge retention while VG10 is a balanced steel like CoS but not as good as CoS. Elmax is excellent for hard use in a smaller knife. In a big knife it might get chippy.

Go for the Fallkniven pro series. Cuts through time like butter but has a hard time with space. I bet after using a very expensive stropping compound you could probably cut through time so easily that you'll be skinning dinosaurs within a few seconds.

Hi, I wanted to know what is the best stainless steel for a bushcraft knife and survival? I would be undecided between Elmax and S30V, but I wanted to know which of them would best resist lateral stresses? Let me know what your choice would be, a greeting
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
Hey michele, I would say something like CoS perhaps or 154cm. I havent really tested elmax or s30v for lateral stress. carbon steels are usually the better choice for that. CPM-3v won't rust very easily but is very tough

@JordanMac79

Mineral oil works well. Depends on the stainless too. S35vn, m390, h1, n680 all steels that would be really hard to rust. Just wipe them dry and they should be okay unless you live in a humid environment

Guten Tag Phil!, thanks for the compliment. We have looked at the fallkniven Northern light series but they are just more fancy looking f1, s1 and a1's. The look more appealing but the handle material isn't care free. The handle takes blood, dirt and stuff like that much more easily. Some people like the worn look but for us it was the reason to stick with the regular ones. The TK2 just doesn't really appeal to me. It must be a good hunting knife from what i've heard though. Good luck with making your hard decision!

Have you guys assessed the Fallkniven TK5/TK6 and the TK1/2 all in 3G? I'd like to hear your thoughts about them. These are crazy little fixed blades! I think I even prefer the little tk5/6 more than their brilliant big brother tk1/2. I possess the hands of a Silverback Gorilla so I just use a three finger grip on them. So small it can ride fully concealed in its enclosed leather sheath in your front pocket.
@DutchBushcraftKnives

It makes a very good hunting knife from what i've heard. We don't have one sadly however we did own a F1 in 3G a long time ago. We sold it because it was chippy... sadly this is so long ago that I don't dare to conclude if we sharpened it wrong back then or if it was actually brittle. still so much to try... that's why I hide away from ebay biddings haha. -stay sharp mate!

@keithmckeith
@keithmckeith 8 жыл бұрын
Yes the 3G can be a bit chippy out of the box, but like many Fallkniven blades, once the slightly toothy 3G factory edge is taken back two or three times, the chipping finishes forever leaving you with a beast! It's just my experience anyway. Having said that I do agree that the COS steel, while slightly softer, is so refined that it can take an even more wicked edge especially in the field using my belt. Maybe it's one of the best all round steels ever put into a knife? I got the first batch of A1 pro and S1 pro, and they both had the rattly/slightly loose rubber handles...and Fallkniven fixed the problem with pure class...absolutely no questions or fuss...new knives - not even a receipt was required. The new batch is nigh on perfection!

Hey Michiel, I don't hate Esee as a company but I really don't understand 1095 @ 55-56HRC on their smaller knives. They just don't hold an edge in a normal edge geometry. I would understand this hardness on large choppers as they need a lot of flexibility. We don't have a video where we really explain how to sharpen or make a convex edge. I would suggest watching some of virtuovice his videos. In this video I make a secondary convex on a kitchen knife and some regular convex sharpening some outdoor knives kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHKThIKZobiJqMU
