Welcome to a knowledge base video brought to you by Toolbox DIY where we will introduce you to the basics of choosing the right caulk for your project. This is a primer to help familiarize you with the various caulk types you can expect to find at your local hardware or big box home improvement store.
In this video, we'll cover acrylic latex caulks, silicone, hybrid caulks, polyurethane and specialty caulks. Each caulk type has an application example to give you a better idea of where certain types of caulks can and should be applied.
We conclude with a couple of helpful tips for applying caulk. So sit back, relax, and get prepared to gain some useful knowledge for your next DIY project!

My gosh, newbie home fixer...I had no idea about any of the differences, and was so utterly confused by varieties and prices at Home Depot! And hated the mess and results with what I had used ( now I know it was silicon and I tried to rework it and got on my fingers). Thank you!

I used Alex plus for inside based board, and using my finger and a wet towel to wipe my finger. for me it was the easiest to use even to fill in big gaps

Great video. Just want to be sure what caulking would I exactly use for exterior wood siding? And also interior windows(around the window the existing caulking is cracking and I'm sure they used the wrong one from the previous owner)? Thanks!!!

Appreciate the info. I need to replace the bathroom's ceiling light fixture (just outside shower). The previous didn't seem to have any sealant, would I need to seal the new fixture so condensation doesn't get between ceiling and fixture, possibly into the electric box?

I'm glad you found this useful! With the exception of 100% silicone, most of the temperature limits are manufacturer & product specific. They all have their own "proprietary" formulas so the temp limits can vary even if two products are labeled as the same sealant type.

ToolboxDIY: I need to caulk around the windows in the interior of the home. I also need to caulk the trim that is at the edges of the ceiling. And the trim at the bottom of the wall right above the floor. So, what do you suggest would be the best caulk for this task?

@@ToolboxDIY I agree, thanks for the video. Also liked the non-verbal exploration of various levels of facial hair. Any chance you have experience with caulking around polypropylene shower pans? Sadly 100% silicone doesn't adhere, and Siliconized Acrylic Latex caulk sucks. Any ideas?

What type of silicon should I apply in between of the toilet flange and it's extension. I installed tiles in my bathroom and the toilet flange is lower then the floor now in order to do it level I have to put extension piece over the toilet flange and I was told to use silicon. I appreciate if could tell me. Thank you

I have a manufactured home that has cellulose sheathing. All the windows were installed with mastic tape. One of the windows was leaking when I pulled the siding off I noticed that not only did they not use mastic or any other sealant they didn't put any screws in the top of the window flange. I was going to pull the window and reinstall it. With the cellulose sheathing what would you recommend.
