So regular silicone, the 2nd category, is not paintable? It's going on my painted front porch, so I need easy to use, totally waterproof, totally paintable, and expands and contracts with weather. Which type should I get and what should the label say to confirm?

I have a question this insightful video didn't quite answer. Can I safely use polyurethane caulk in a tub shower that has a fiberglass tub with ceramic tile with mutton chops, or should I be using silicone with a handlebar mustache?
@ToolboxDIY2 жыл бұрын
For a fiberglass tub and ceramic tile, I typically go with silicone and a fully shaved face. I tried it with a full beard and....oh boy, that was mess.

Very very helpful, so thanks for putting this together! Wish you would have continued with temperature limits for the remaining caulks as you did in the beginning.
@ToolboxDIY6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found this useful! With the exception of 100% silicone, most of the temperature limits are manufacturer & product specific. They all have their own "proprietary" formulas so the temp limits can vary even if two products are labeled as the same sealant type.

So what type would you recommend for exterior on wood framing? I need to fill in gaps and will have to paint it. My husband applied sometime ago, but it’s all cracked and looks ugly. Appreciate your advice. Loved the video and transformation! 🧔👨🦰👱♂️
@ToolboxDIY5 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a paintable polyurethane. Something like Loctitie PL Polyurethane or Sonolastic NP-1. If the gaps are more than 1/8", get a foam backer rod to first place inside the gap/crack. Before painting, allow the sealant to fully cure - check the label to find the cure time for that brand.

I have an unusual need for caulk if you don't mind offering some advice? I am restoring an expensive sneaker and the heel cup has a crack on the 3m reflective plastic. I'm looking to fill and seal the crack with a flexible caulk so that it doesn't go rock hard for wearability purposes, and also want to paint over with a reflective paint to restore the original look. What would you recommend? Would the white DAP flexible acrylic latex caulk with silicone be a good match?
