Having spent the last 39 years standing beside a corrugator watching it run the various flutes you described I give your explanation an A+! Great job!

*_I used to work for a Major Corrugated Container Manufacturer..._* We made both Single Wall and Double Wall product. One of our other plants made Triple Wall. It was used to ship major appliances like Refrigerators, Washing Machines, etc. It was like a piece of Plywood. Fun presentation on Fluting. We had all those different type of Rollers. They were preheated with high temperature steam before placing on the Wet End of Corrugator. Heat and Pressure set the glue. Everything is carefully managed for quality control. We could make in excess of 6 million square feet of product per shift.

a) Cardboard (non corrugated aka chipboard) is also great option for a lot of products. I find a lot of shoes packaged this way, and these boxes are very sturdy, light and easy to the cut into smaller pieces for recycling. It also takes less storage unfolded, because it is usually thinner. It can make a difference when you are selling a lot of stuff. They are usually not the best for shipping, but not always, sometimes they are also very good for shipping! b) There is also a honeycomb fill (more like squares / rhombus actually usually, but there are products with actual hexagons too around), that is also very strong, and is strong in all directions. It can be used almost as a construction material, insulation, even furniture. If you are packaging very heavy stuff, or separating layers between heavy containers, you can consider it. Or if you package multiple heavy things or varied size (i.e. furniture panels, with side and top and bottom being different widths) inside one package, to fill spaces cheaply, lightly, but also strongly. Or want to secure weirdly shaped items inside the box and fill voids properly. They are very versatile!

Good video however double wall is not two sheets of single wall together. Double wall would be two flutes and 3 liners (5 layers total). Two sheets of single wall together would be 2 flutes and 4 liners making it 6 layers which is not correct..

What type of corrugate flute would you use if you want puncture resistance, we ship whiteboards and we get alot of forklift puncture on the surface of our product?
@marciapopa77584 жыл бұрын
Double wall isn't usually 2 sheets of singlewall board together, as that would end up with 4 liners vs. just 3 liners, right? Also, you said "corr-a-git" at one point - isn't the noun said as corrugated (long "a" sound and "d" at the end or as a verb it is "corr-u-gate", still with long "a" sound?

@@ShippingThings It's because A and B were invented first. C-flute began to appear in the mid 1960's (first offered commercially in Canada in 1964). People soon learned that A-flute crushed too easily (with lighter papers) but B-flute did not have the (vertical) stacking strength. C-flute fits exactly between the 2 and was created to capture the best of both worlds. Today, A-flute shows up rarely (except in triple-wall and some double-wall) while C-flute is 60 to 70% of the typical output of a corrugating box plant. Additionally, D-flute is not some forgotten, mysterious flute - it's big in Europe but relatively new in North America. Again, it fits exactly in between B- and E-flutes. Just to make things more complicated, D-flute is also called R-flute by some. While I've got your attention: Double-wall is not 2 single-walls laminated together - it's actually 2 single-face sheets + a liner. Also, chipboard is not cardboard - chipboard is chipboard. Another name for cardboard is "folding carton" (the name I prefer). BTW - great video and great energy!
