How To Pack Paintings for Shipping! Packing a 24x36, Tools needed and Tips!

Hello Friends! Welcome back! A few days ago someone asked me how I pack my paintings for shipping. Thats what I will show you today.
I will give you links for where I get all the things I use below.
This is how I do it, other people may do it differently and thats great.
Keep in mind that wrapping and packing materials cost money and that cost gets reflected in what you pay for shipping and handling. This is how I am comfortable shipping my work.
I dont add hardware and I dont put paper on the backside. My thought process is that if the customer wants that done they will either ask me to do it or they can take it to any art/framing store and have it done exactly how they want it, in whatever orientation they want.
The Materials I use:
1. Glassine Paper
2. Clear Packing Tape
3. Reinforced Brown Paper Tape
4. Scotch Tape
5. scissors
6. Bubble Wrap
7. the right size box
8. Greeting Card for personal message
9. Business Cards
10. Cardboard Corner Protectors
11. Paint pen or Sharpie to sign your artwork
12. Air pillows for Cushioning
Some things to remember:
-always work in a clean area when packing your artwork. Wipe down the work surface before you begin.
-Gather your materials in place before you begin to make the process more efficient.
-order your supplies in bulk, its much more cost effective.
-take your time while working. You are sending your artwork to someone, treat it with reverence. The attention to detail you put into your art and shipping it is noticed by your customers, and appreciated.
-adding a personal note to the client is a small gesture that means a lot. Write neatly, think about something nice and uplifting to write before you begin.
-make sure your artwork is truly dry and cured before you ship it. Your client would rather wait a week and get the painting they paid for, rather than something ruined with Paper and bubble wrap stuck to it, or bumps and indentations in it.
-feel free to enclose a small gift with your artwork.. a greeting card you made, a test canvas, an ornaments, a pin. Little gestures mean a lot to returning customers.
-Use good quality products that work well.
-Dont skimp on the outside tape. Better to use a bit more tape and have your artwork arrive safely, rather than have a painting fall out of the box you are shipping.
-Size matters! 4 inches seems to be the magic number when shipping artwork. Boxes more than 4 inches deep get very expensive to ship. Use a box the right depth, or cut one down to get to 4 inches. Don't pay double the shipping charges to ship air.
-It is OK to add a handling fee to your shipping charges, to cover the cost of materials used, plus the time it takes to package something. Don't go crazy, but $5 or $10 is not unreasonable if you are buying boxes and tape and bubble wrap. Calculate your cost per package and adjust your handling fees accordingly.
-Appearances matter. Try to use boxes in good condition that are sturdy and not beat up. Not only will they protect what you are shipping, but it sends a message that your artwork is valuable and protected. Your clients will appreciate it.
-Make sure to get your clients shipping address, email address and a phone number for shipping purposes. Communicate with them!

(I usually don't buy these, I'm including the link just in case you don't have any. It is perfectly OK to reuse these!)

I hope this video at least gives you a starting point in how to safely package your artwork for shipping. I encourage you to shop around for deals and take some time to get to know shipping in apps like FedEx or USPS if you like that better. It can be confusing at first but find a system that works for you and stick with it. I personally like FedEx because they will pick up packages and things get there safely and on time with them. Ground Shipping within the US is usually about $30, and fairly quick.

Wow AOA! When I received my painting, my hubby mentioned how well wrapped it was. He said that there was no way that it was going to get damaged with the bubble wrap on it. He was very impressed. He's gotten guitars with less bubble wrap on and they were damaged. He said "bless her heart for making sure that the painting was safe. Hang a 1" dowel from ceiling, brackets for bubble wrap and rod from wall for glassine, buy a tape dispenser and your life would be SO much easier !!!!!! everything out of way but ready to use!! (I was a box maker/packer in some former life !!!). I get VERY excited when I come across a pile of boxes (especially a deco or furniture place when they get a shipment of mirrors /art in). I think of myself as the ultimate recycler although my husband refers to me as something else.....

AHA!!! Glassine paper. Parchment paper is super hard because tape doesn’t stick to it!! Very cool!! I use dollar store pool noodles, cut in 3” pieces and slit on one side for the corners. Thanks soooo much. 😎

You make it look so slick and easy! 👏👏 I noticed a struggle with the bubble wrap package. I wondered if HOA could attach a dowel with some kind of attachment to the wall, kinda like a towel holder but with room for the bubblewrap roll. I'm no handy woman, but I bet he likes figuring stuff out like that if it would help you! It might even be able to be removable??

And coming back to say... YES!!! To the glassine paper!!! It has been the one thing I have found that does not make any marks on my painting during storage at all!!!
