The GriGri’s acceptable range is 8.5 - 11 mm. Predator is 11.4. . Even though the difference is minimal the manufacture really stresses you stay within the perimeters

If you utilize a prussic you will be able to DRT climb with most any rope that doesn't have the knot characteristics of somthing like Samson predator , plus it gives you the same benefits of adding a split tail. That's another thing you could use on any rope add a split tail. Watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH60aKinbrZggbs

I have a 10.1mm dynamic Petzl rope that was purchased for me as a gift about 8 years ago. It's been stored in climate control and never been climbed on. Do you think it will work for DRT or SRT? I have inspected it and found no flaws or issues other than age.

Probably work fine for both .

Question is how dynamic. There great rock climbing ropes. If there’s a lot of bounce, that transfers into energy loss . Arborist climbing ropes are more static but we’re also climbing much higher than hunting height. Try it out and see what you think 👍

picked up the samson predator it's a great rope very happy i went that route! thinking i might buy another. great video by the way - exactly what i was looking for to address my concerns after my first go at climbing today. after an hour of cussing a swearing i finally made some progress and got up that damn rope! my cheap throw ball line broke on the tree after the first attempt pulling it through the crotch. second attempt: i lost the weight cuz im complete idiot. why would i pull it back up the tree so i watched my throw weight wrap around a branch😯.... - .opened my eyes as to the friction the rope is going through sliding on the tree - It seems the rope would last longer using the SRT method opposed to the DRT method less abrasion from sliding on the tree. method.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 жыл бұрын
The rope friction on the tree isnt what beats up the rope, its the friction in the hitch if you decend too quickly. Rope would probably last longer for SRT but honestly if you are using it foe hunting and recreational climbing itvwill last you many years. I just went to a new rope this week my original predator rope was bought in 2018 and I climb alot all year long DRT and my rope is still like new

NY Saddle Hunter Maybe I missed it but I was wondering what length of rope do you need if your highest set is 30’? All you should need is 60’ right?
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 4 жыл бұрын
Brian Brake In reality yes. But you can’t count on tree limbs being a exact height. That is why we carry 75’ of climbing line. I felt this length would cover about 90% of the trees we need to get in without having to carry a whole hank of rope which is 120 - 150’. Joe and I ordered 150’ of Predator line so we would each have a 75’ line

Depending on how bad the rope gets gummed up. Mild soap and warm water usually do the trick . If your hitch is still moving freely. I wouldn’t worry about it

I know every is loving the predator rope but Check out “KnotandRope.com”. They have a great option for a camo rope called Deep Woods. It’s a 24 strand, 11mm, polyester rope with a tensile strength of 6,300lbs. I’ve been using it all year for my lineman’s belt and tether... it shows minimal to zero wear. They also sell it by the foot which is awesome. It’s about 90cents per foot.

Great video. Very helpful video. Just pondering on rope color. Is Samson predator Camo color important for the DRT rope? Are you picking Camo so other hunters don’t notice you as much. I’m assuming other colors would be ok since deer can’t see some colors. Would even an orange rope be ok? Or even white/gray colors like Sitka camo. Just browsing that website and seeing if there is a better 24 strand, strength to weight ratio compared to the Sampson predator that’s comparable in price. Is the Sampson predator camo just personal preference or does it have other advantages? Thanks again guys. Enjoying your videos. Just getting into saddle hunting. DRT is intriguing me.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 4 жыл бұрын
Camo is more of a preference for us. There are several other good ropes for DRT in WesSpurs catalog. Some have a smaller diameter other’s are larger. 11.4 Predator is the smallest I would go for DRT. Larger diameter feels better in your hand. Doesn’t cut into you as much. Predator works for us on a number of reasons Color , packability , weight , good knot characteristics, and just the right amount of dynamics. At 3% elongation your not getting excessive bounce . If your looking for a rope that performs like Predator with a larger diameter and a 7,643 lb tensile strength. Direction Up is a good choice. Plus it’s color pallet with black and green will keep visibility at a minimum. It’s out of order at the moment. As soon as it comes in. I’ll put it through it’s paces. Thanks Aaron and Good Luck !

If it’s badly burned and if it’s on the tail end of the rope. Remove burnt part and tape end. I’m going to be debuting a alternative rope for climbing . Since a lot of you guys like climbing as much as we do. I keep a second climbing rope just for hunting so it stays scent free. And a alternate rope for Rec Climbing to stay in shape.

I've heard you guys say you use about 75' of rope for your DRT rope. Is this 75' after your all of your knots are tied, or just 75' of rope and you're including how much is needed for knots to reach desired heights? I always tend to underestimate how much is needed for my knots.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 4 жыл бұрын
75' total that's enough to get you around 35' high. You use about 5' for the knots and Blake's hitch

@@NYSaddleHunter so a 60' or even 50' would work for most hunters to get 20' up? what length do you recommend for SRT?
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicklausmisiti5204 So you need to consider not every tree will have a good limb at 20' so with 75' any good limb within 35 ' will work . With SRT you could use less rope but you still need enough rope or you can use paracord to add to bring you up and back down to run through a slip knot . I like to carry 75' off rope for srt also and I tie either a midline alpine butterfly or I can base tie and climb like that. The 75' gives you more options. Carrying less rope is less weight and bulk but adds another step to setting up so you would have to see what you personally prefer but I like Carrying 75' for both DRT and SRT

I use a Ridge Runner by Out On A Limb if there are no good limbs to stand on. I have one set I have to use one climbing stick with a 12’ rope mod to reach around the large diameter trunk . There are climbing ropes, rappelling ropes, rigging ropes, general purpose ropes, and many others, so it is easy to buy the wrong kind. Be careful. Ask questions before you make your purchase or you will end up like me, with several types of expensive rope not well-suited for my needs.

If you think about climbing somthing more static is easier to climb than somthing thsts stretching . You want it to be a static line with good knot ability. Since your climbing on a single line 75 would be plenty . Most ropes come in 120’ and 150’ as far as diameter you’ll have to check the specs on the gri gri you ordered make sure it falls somewhere in the middle of the specified mm . For example if your gri gri lists 8.5 - 11mm. You should be 8.9 - 10.5 for optimum performance. Hope that answers your question. Thanks SO
