Chop Away at my Heart literally changed my life. Before I heard the song, I was a 30 year old vagrant living off canned beans and whatever cat flesh I could scavenge from the streets of Hong Kong. My days consisted of begging for spare change to buy imported American malt liquor, and the occasional bout of public urination followed by subsequent canings. Then the Lumberzacks entered my life. After thoroughly embracing and internalizing the transcendent wisdom of the lyrics, I suddenly knew there was more to life than crying in a filthy alley while watching bootleg Who Framed Roger Rabbit DVDs. The waving American flags in the background inspired me to rediscover my dignity, my self-respect, and my underwear. I stowed away on a tramp steamer bound for the giant redwoods of my dreams. After a series of adventures too nauseatingly disgusting for print, I arrived back in the United States where I immediately found a job as a professional flannel wearing lumberjack; eventually, working my way to proud owner of the Horizontal Tango Tree-Way sawmill in Happy Camp California. I've been making millions of dollars a year ever since. Thank you Chop Away at my Heart. You saved my life. And thank you KitKatPotato for providing such a richly deserved music video in the song's honor. Actually both this song and Waving Through A Window are referencing the phrase “If a tree falls alone in the forest does it even make a sound?” I think the phrase is supposed to be some kind of metaphor for “if no one sees me do anything did I ever do anything at all?” Kinda why Evan sings the line because he feels alone and worthless. The line is used here tho just because it’s a tree pun
