She won First Prize and the Prize for the best interpretation of a mazurka at the 4th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1949. She has performed extensively in Poland and abroad. She is regularly on the jury of international piano competitions (the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, the Artur Rubinstein Competition in Tel-Aviv, the Hummel Competition in Bratislava, the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki). She also has to her credit recordings for the following labels: Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, His Master's Voice, RCA and Polskie Nagrania. Ludwik Stefański (1917-1982), pianist and pedagogue, began his piano studies at the Wladyslaw Zeleński School of Music in Kraköw. He furthered his education at the Conservatory in Bologna (Italy) and at N. Rossi's master classes. Upon returning to Poland in 1939, Ludwik Stefański became a professor at the State Higher Schools of Music in Kraköw and Wroclaw. I saw and heard Halina Czerny-Stefanska in concert in Hong Kong in my youth during the 1960's and from then has been my favourite interpreter of Chopin's music bar none. Her sensitivity and perfectly-judged amount of 'rubato' is equalled by very few - and there's no lack of brilliance and bravura when required! She was also the favourite of my mother who was one of Hong Kong's premier piano teachers between the 1940's & 1970's. Stefanska's DGG recording of the Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise Brillante (solo piano version which I prefer) + Ballades 1 & 4 + a selection of Mazurkas was our 'Bible' for many years, and so it is lovely to listen again to so much of it here again!

Hihi... dzień dobry Seniorzy! Dopiszę się i ja, czemu nie? Jako dziecko byłem uczniem Pani prof. Trombini - Casurowej (podobno miałem wybitny talent, ale... za krótkie palce jak dla pianisty!) i właściwie wychowywałem się na muzyce Chopina, Mozarta, Bacha, itd itd. I trudno mi dziś, z perspektywy czasu powiedzieć gra którego z pianistów najbardziej mi się podoba. Nie wyobrażam sobie życia bez słuchania muzyki! Staram się uczestniczyć (oczywiście jako słuchacz) w Konkursach Chopinowskich i przyznam, iż jest wielu młodych, wspaniałych pianistów z całego świata. Także z Korei, Japonii, Chin... Gdybym jednak miał wskazać jednego - WYBITNEGO pianistę, powiedziałbym iż jest to... Kristian Zimmermann. Pozdrawiam serdecznie z Polski. Tomasz

WOW- this is the best rendition of Chopin I've heard in a very very long time. Each note is like a pearl.... Have been out of the piano world for a long time- didn't remember Czerny had a daughter much less that that daughter was a gifted pianist and phenomenal interpreter of Chopin.... The playing was extremely musical and so beautiful and moving. In fact, it was so good that it makes you forget a very big mystery: how could this pre-1961 recording be remastered so that there's no trace of tape hiss but yet, on the other hand, it has a wide dynamic range and gives both the piano and orchestra so much presence that you feel like you are on stage with them. I just wonder what the engineers did, it must have been something more sophisticated than just low-passing out the noise.

Czerny- Stefanska was famous in the USSR in the 50s. My mom had an LP of just 2 polonaises, and I listened to it as often as I could, learning to dance that intricate dance along the way. But I was too little, to understand her commanding artistry playing Chopin! Thank you for this wonderful collection! I think her father was very famous Polish composer Czerny, whose etudes I played in musical school.

The fate of great geniuses behind an Iron Curtain. We will never know about others. Fortunately, great piano performances had to happen in public, and also recorded. And the identity of the performer was certain. We must remember how Polonaises were a bone of contention when they were written and also during the Cold War!
