What is some advice you have for figuring out when to practice slowly with rhythms and when to practice at full speed (in small sections)? Love the videos!

It’s always a good idea to practice slow and fast. Rhythm work helps on continuous, same-note-value passages (if there are a bunch of rests and different note values, rhythm work (long-short, LSSS, LLLSSSSS, etc doesn’t work as well)

Hi Josh. Great Lesson! I enjoy playing the piano as a hobby, and I am very much an amateur. I was wondering is it compulsory to follow the fingering on a score. Is there such a thing as incorrect fingering? I understand that it would be wrong to choose fingering that causes uncomfortable stretches or makes it challenging to play the piece up to tempo. I also understand that different pianists have different-sized hands. I have heard that the shorter fingers play the long keys and the long fingers play the short keys. If using different fingers on certain keys works for you, and you can perform the measure/passage comfortably it is ok to use alternate fingerings? Are there any rules that say you can not use different fingers on certain keys? Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.

There are not really rules and everybody has different fingerings that are comfortable to him. If a passage isn't working, fingering should be one of the first things we look at. After all, a fingering should be comfortable and also work in a faster tempo. Try and experiment with your own fingerings, or ask a teacher :) if you have any questions, feel free to respond

@@simonarnoldpianist2801 Thank you for your comment. I will keep your advice in mind when learning future pieces. Usually, I try to follow the suggested fingerings but there have been times when I have made up my own, usually because it felt more natural to me, or the score simply didn't have any fingering suggestions written on it. Sometimes I will watch other pianists perform to see what fingerings they use. Thank you so much for your help:)
