Keep in mind that Chopin, along with Liszt and Beethoven, is considered one of the greatest pianists in history. Also, as an etude, you can assume that he wrote this piece to challenge himself and push his own ability to new heights. So yes, it is rightfully absurdly hard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lisitsa was one of the pianists who practices the most. I think she's a great pianist to be looking at if one wants to learn technique too - in one interview she said he usually practices around 8 hours a day or more. Lisitsa has two recordings (that I know of) of Rachmaninoff's Little Red Riding Hood etude in youtube - in the poorer quality one you can see her left hand movement ard 1:12 mark kzbin.info/www/bejne/qofYgWR4n8ebd8k Superhuman.

For some reason I think wrong notes are actually harder to play fast. When you get scales and arpeggios and beat then into your brain, it's almost instinctual. Not to mention, you PRACTICE right notes, which allows you to play at increased tempos. You don't practice wrong notes. So it's only natural to actually play them slower. Regardless, she does monster through this piece. I've performed this and I only play it like 75 or 80% as fast. It took me roughly like 2:17 to play this. I could never play it this fast and this accurate.

Damn I can't believe this vid is already about 11 years straight. During 2008, Even when KZbin didn't had a smartphone application, I watched her Chopin etude vid and fall in love with classics when I was 7. Her Chopin performance is like unstoppable power, current flowing like a waterfall..never reducing the energy and speed. I tried to learn etude op.12 no.12-(The Ocean)-, and figured that her power and strengh is freaking beyond. I always had painful arms and hands after practice, but Valentina- she just rans through like a piece of cake. I never could follow that energetic movements. Anyways, thanks, Valentina, for not deleting this Chopin etude series so I can retrospect my good old memories. :)

It's a wonderful thing for someone to perform these etudes with such virtuosity and Valentina is absolutely GREAT but we must never forget the GENIUS of the composer who made this possible. Chopin's " ETUDES" which were meant as exercises to prepare the pianist to be able to play his really HARD compositions are incredible and wonderful " HIT " tunes in their own right...every single one of them and it is this unique quality which makes every finished pianist at this level sound so good. I love many of the great piano composers but CHOPIN is in a class by himself. He was the BEATLES of his age...so many " HITS"
