This upload is in reply to a viewer's request for a new recording of this work on my FEURICH grand piano.
Patreon link for viewers that kindly asked to participate in supporting this channel: / paulbarton
This recording was made with the harmonic pedal only, alternating between resonance half position in the relatively quiet and quick parts and sustain position in the loud and quick parts. The sustain position of the harmonic pedal was used throughout the the slow middle section.
The resonance half position of the harmonic pedal allows a type controllable reverberation which can unify passages which could otherwise run the risk of blurring with the traditional sustain pedal.
To know more about the new 4th harmonic pedal please visit our harmonic piano pedal channel: / harmonicpianopedal

The amazing part of the piano is that, by clearly separating the main melody notes and the secondary ones, it sounds as if there were 4 hands playing, not just two. I find that incredible and absolutely amazing!

not gifted, hard working? chopin spent only around 1 hour daily to play piano when he was a child, there were periods in his life that he didnt play piano for MONTHS, yet he had incredible playing technique and creativity to compose. He started to play more when he was like 14 years old and decided to become a professional musician. There are people who dedicated their life to piano and train several hours daily since years and can't even be compared to him. Gift and genius over hard work in this case.

You, sir, have brought back many wonderful memories of when I first discovered Chopin's beautiful music. This was one of the first pieces by him which I heard, and yet, in all this time, yours is the only one in which I am able to find such remarkable clarity and understanding. I can simply close my eyes and imagine Chopin's deepest emotions flowing from the piano. Exceptional technique and heartwarming performance, Mr. Barton.

this is a refreshing interpretation. I'm not sure how I like it compared to the standard, but I cannot deny how well defined your notes were for how fast you were playing. You're a cut above the rest, Paul.

This is really what puts this rendition on a different level from the others on KZbin. The clarity and definition of the individual notes. They all tend to blur together in the other cover renditions. It's mastery of the fundamental elements like that which seperate the mediocre from the great.
@sorcus2144
@sorcus2144 5 жыл бұрын
M Phylo I came back after hearing Rousseau’s version and in that version, everything is blended together as one continuous sound. In this version the notes are easier to distinguish from the rest and it doesn’t just sound like a continuous wave of notes being played if you know what I mean, greater clarity in his playing?
@williamlei9873
@williamlei9873 5 жыл бұрын
Those trills in the slow part were trippy AF to listen to cuz he starts on the note after it and plays four notes in his trill instead of just going one note up and back. That's why I don't really like this rendition.

This is a very good interpretation and performance of the piece. I love the fact that you don’t drown the piece into a sustainpedal-mess. Way to many performances(even top-of-the-pop concert pianists)uses way to much sustainpedal which really really hurt the articulation. And your timing is pretty much perfect. Well done:-)

This play has more jewels than just the historical performance with an 19th-century-tuned piano. I can now hear the sensitivity of the melodies from Chopin's Fantasie-impromtu, which I could not hear from other few young artists' play. Mr. Paul Barton seems the best artist in understanding the sensitivity of the 19th century piano pieces.

Excellent! I can really hear the difference that the use of the harmonic pedal makes in the first half. I was brought up playing a C19th piano which was much less resonant than a modern one. It was possible to play romantic music with greater clarity while still using legato pedalling; this performance is very evocative of that effect.
@PaulBartonPiano
@PaulBartonPiano 8 жыл бұрын
+David Hillary -- yes David, exactly, the piano you played was a very different instrument to our modern grand piano, the pedaling in his Etudes for example is a challenge on the modern piano. Can I ask you, in you memory of this piano was the action lighter too?
@davidhillary5738
@davidhillary5738 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Barton Hi Paul, the action certainly wasn't heavy but the notable thing was that the key dip was much shallower than on a modern instrument which, of course, made rapid passage playing much easier.

Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow - You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand - How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep - while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream?
