Strangely enough, when The Nocturnes are played well... I see visions in my mind of the salons (rooms) in which they might have first been played. I see the ladies' dress. I smell the candles and the leftover food and wine still in the air. I think Chopin learned some kind of secret of how to create pictures of things. And then transmit those pictures into sound/music. A few other composers can do this to varying degrees, but not like Chopin.

He lived long enough to be shown gratitude for his delightful and enchanting work but a mere 39 years - Gosh, what more could Chopin have created if he'd been blessed with kinder health. Thankfully we have some tremendously talented pianists throughout the world who interpret his masterpieces for all of us to enjoy. The first question put to me by my first piano tutor, when I was seven years of age, was, "Which composer do you admire the most?" I obviously said, Chopin. At that, my tutor played a little Chopin for me and being such a young girl and very nervous, I cried!
