In contrast to the grandeur in some of his more lively waltzes, Chopin was also a master of melancholy, as captured in this waltz. I saw my father playing this timeless piece when I was a kid. I am 82 now and I still remember watching his strong hands over the keyboard and the pleasure in his handsome face. When he was 18 my grandparents prompted him to apply for a scholarship in Europe, which he reluctantly did. When it was his time for a test, there was a sudden power outage in the building; my father said he would play anyway -which he did in the dark! The German professor wanted to take him to Europe right away! But my father said he preferred to remain studying in Montevideo, where he became an architect and math teacher --never stopping his piano playing.

I remember when I was 6 I was doing the choreography in Russian school under this musical piece, this piece is very close to my heart and I still vividly remember how majestical it was. It was deadly quiet, you could only hear the rustle of ballet shoes. The smell of paint fills the old Soviet room with wooden poles and floor. The clumsy movements under this musical piece were not felt at all, you had a feeling of full control of your body. The pianist was an elderly woman with a Soviet mentality, she was strict and profound. However, when she played Chopin's music she was completely immersed in this melancholic atmosphere. As far as I know, she died 8 years ago in her old Soviet apartment. Thank you for the memories. Rest in peace.

I went to his Polish boyhood home near Warsaw about 15 years ago with my Canadian husband , who plays piano and told me he started to play after he heard Chopins' famous Fantasy Impromptu on the radio when he was 15 years old ... in 1965!! Unfortunately the place was locked up as they were doing renovations. I am Polish and actually had a chance to go into the home in high school and they have (at the time) a plaster cast of Chopins hands. I noticed that the space between the fingers was (abnormally) wide. Maybe that is why he could compose some of the works the way they were written.. difficult for anyone.

but dont try and play this piece as a beginner, wait until you are at least a good intermediate player. Make sure to go slowly with the part that comes right after the beginning, it is a lot harder then it looks. remember that the more you listen to a piece the less exciting it becomes. if you have to practice this like a 1000 times over it will lose its charm pretty quickly.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - I played this when I was 17 and used to play most of the piece with a great deal of restraint, and then for a flex played the last repeat of the high part at breakneck speed - it's always interesting hearing different musicians playing their own interpretations of the piece; think I prefer this version upon hearing it with mature ears. No soy quien para juzgar, vivo muy bien en comparación a otra gente, pero no quiero comparar, tan solo quiero dejar todo de lado y pensar: ah, ¡qué bella es la vida! Pero este sentimiento no ha aparecido en mi en mucho tiempo, y cuando lo hace, son por cortos periodos. Eso no importa, porque la música existe y es gracias a ella y Dios por lo que sigo agradecida con la vida, y aún así no puedo vivirla al máximo, por el miedo o la imposibilidad, las tantas cosas que tengo acumuladas, las que quiero terminar de una sola vez. Pero ¿qué es esta necesidad humana a la que tanto nos acercamos, sino una distracción de la realidad? El arte se emplea para una sola cosa, y esa es la representación de algo. Y por más abstracta que sea la idea, siempre va a estar vinculada a un término humano o realista, que represente el sentimiento o la causa. Como persona, estoy teniendo por mi vida, por mi futuro, me preocupo. Pero eso ya lo sabíamos. En la ciudad nublada de Lima, Perú, las cosas se vuelven pesadas, con el contexto de esta pandemia, peor. Y quiero mantener esa fe de saber que alguien más pasa por lo mismo que yo. Con miedo, y mucho temor, quiero acercarme a ella, la música, majestuosa que hace que la vida sea algo que se disfrute. He estudiado piano por los últimos cinco años. Desafortunadamente ha ocurrido un problema y no puedo tocarlo como antes, ¡oh, qué maldad! Sí, pero no quedaba otra opción. Si no puedo rendirme, no me queda otra opción que seguir luchando. Porque es doloroso, y es duro, y porquela vida va a continuar siendo de esa forma y no podré hacer nada para cambiar lo que tiene planeado. Y, aunque no lo comprenda, debo seguir en pie. Por más que no quiera, o que no pueda, y aunque duela hasta el punto de arder, si sigo así, puede que llegue a encontrar una respuesta. Muchas gracias, Frédéric. I'd say the technique in this piece is quite simple, but the musicality gives it that extra point on the Henle scale.

Paris Vieux Wayyy harder, nah, slightly harder? Agree. Winter Wind has fast, extremely difficult runs in both hands, the right hand has to switch between the secondary melody and a chromatic scale every other note. The left hand plays the melody, the gaps between the notes in the runs and the sheer relentless of the piece is what makes it so difficult. But La Campanella may not have as much fast runs, but it still has other difficulties. It is also a piece that has huge endurance issues. It has more difficult and more diverse techniques. It requires a mastery of jumps, ever if they’re in both hands and opposite directions, and trills, with even the fingers 4 and 5. It also require you to be able to trill while a melody in the same hand. And the end... It requires really good octaves and the ability to play chords at virtuosic speeds. You’re right La Campanella is harder, but not by much.

Jackson McAvoy I don’t think the Henle scale is very accurate, it gives this and Minute Waltz a 6. But the example piece for 6 is Nocturne Op27 no1, the middle section of that piece is technically much harder then this, and probably around the same musically. There is way too much of a gap between the difficulty of pieces with the same level, it needs like 4 to 5 more levels to actually be useful.

I am 79 and still remember when I was 10 year old listening Chopin biography from an old radio because at that time in my country the tv was not arrived yet. At that age I was not able to understand why they called his lover George Sand.. but I was hipnotizad by his music. Now I live in USA and thank God to KZbin can listen and listen to Chopin , Verdi, Beethoven and all the classical pieces. This music is from heaven.

chopin is my favorite composer for piano because in my mind he has a finger in so many genres. some of his melodies sound baroque with the mathmaetical tendencies, but play his pieces to a metronome like you might play Bach seems sooooo wrong. he feels like a predecessor to jazz with all his chromaticism and unique chords and his predictable structures and incredible melodies. cant say enough about that guy. he was a true artist.
