I see that people tend to forget how Bruce nailed this competition on every aspect possible so I will put it here as a reminder: Performance: Bruce was the only pianist that was consistently wonderful in all rounds. He was unique in every stage and presented something different with every piece he played. He never claims that he is a Chopin player but he went and won the damn competition with 2 years preparation anyway. Piano: he was one of the few pianists that chose Fazioli which was an unconventional choice and many online viewers made fun of him on the first round for his choice. Then he used the piano masterfully, made it sing beautifully and won the championship (a first for Fazioli then) and make the brand more popular. Now, not many people question pianists when they choose Fazioli in competitions. In terms of jury: he has gotten the highest scores in all rounds, he is the only one that got "pass" from all the juries in all rounds and as far as I know that is very rare in whole Chopin Competition history. Audience: AND the most important one that he was an audience favorite… He had gotten a standing ovation with his unconventional Chopin playing in Poland, where people are born into listening Chopin. Before the final, the whole Warsaw was guessing that Bruce would win and he should. Star quality: I can say with confidence that he was the one with big star potential in Chopin Competition 2021. His stage presence, charisma, connecting with audience signaled a top tier potential star. His Carnegie Hall debut was sold out and he played 7 encores to an enthusiastic audience. Audience loves him and doesn’t want to let him go. Please tell me how many classical musicians under 30 have this kind of effect on audience. So… he won, Chopin Institute won, Fazioli won and the audience won! The End.

Absolutely! On top of his perfect and effortless mastery of the instrument, his vast range of moods, his unique and natural voice makes him the most promising pianist of his generation (Yuja Wang being the ultimate star of the previous generation). Can't wait to see him grow into his wonderful talents.
@gugendir Жыл бұрын

@@gugendir Sadly, classical music is a field in which being good looking triggers strong suspicions... Not naming names, but it has been used in the past to make up for a lack of talent... I would also argue that Kyohei Sorita was a strongly deserving candidate for the first prize... That was an exceptionally good year...
@gugendir Жыл бұрын
@@ltbrooklynny You know, I even read some say 2021 was a weak year so Bruce got it is easy… I mean, since when Chopin Compt. is easy and how was that weak? Imo, it was one of the best finalist lineup which every pianist had their own style…. From Bruce to Sorita to Eva to Gadjiev… So everyone can have their own favorites of course. Bruce won because all the reasons I mentioned above but even if he didn’t, he would find his way to a solid international career. I bet he was getting invitations after that 3rd stage performance. People forget that not every winner has biggest career (like Avdeeva), a bronze winner (Trifonov) can go more global..

The thing with Bruce Liu is he plays his music out of sheer joy to share with his audience first and not concern with competing with his fellow contestants. In one of his interviews, he said at the Chopin competition, after each round he played in , he was ready with his luggage to fly home not expecting to advance to the next round. He’s just happy and feel fulfilled that he’s able to play all the music he has prepared regardless of winning or not!

In the first part the piano brings up two distinct characters talking one to another. They become one until the end, but the voices separation and distinct intonation stays there till the end. He was born with that, no way to achieve it by merely practice. So much clarity, accents on small details, phrasing, poetry in the second part, sparse pedalling as unheard before, allowing staccato in the left hand with flowing legato on the right hand, crystal clear sound with fantastic control in pianissimo; it was impossible not to win. This guy is a phenomenon, he will be talked about for sure.

I watched Aimi Kobayashi's performance for this Final and couldn't believe she ended in 4th place, I didn't know about Bruce Liu but I can see why he was First. Still I wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the jurors for this contest they are all excellent ! Congratulations Bruce Liu 👏👏👍❤

The most amazing brillant pianist I've ever heard..
Beautiful is understatement. There is a magic of transporting listeners to a fantasy world, but no one like him who transporting a whole fantasy world right to the stage, fill the room with brilliance colours, stars and forest.

A great and nuanced interpretation of this deservedly popular and well-known work. Pianism of a high order and well-deserving of the gold medal. This young man will stand among the great piano interpreters of his generation.
Bruce; Your love and empathic connection with Chopin is almost too beautiful for this world! Your love shines with a light radiant with confidence... that will be yours forever. Bravo young titan.

This was simply a superb and manificent performance, the orchestra was outstanding. A rare one indeed, when soloist, orchestra, conductor and audience came together, to bring out a masterworks that will be time tested.

To a significant extent, I would say the brilliance of rondo is due to Fazioli. The piano sounds completely different from the standard Steinway. I believe, thanks to the wonderful performances of Bruce and others, Fazioli will become the new standard of piano in the coming years.
