I see that people tend to forget how Bruce nailed this competition on every aspect possible so I will put it here as a reminder: Performance: Bruce was the only pianist that was consistently wonderful in all rounds. He was unique in every stage and presented something different with every piece he played. He never claims that he is a Chopin player but he went and won the damn competition with 2 years preparation anyway. Piano: he was one of the few pianists that chose Fazioli which was an unconventional choice and many online viewers made fun of him on the first round for his choice. Then he used the piano masterfully, made it sing beautifully and won the championship (a first for Fazioli then) and make the brand more popular. Now, not many people question pianists when they choose Fazioli in competitions. In terms of jury: he has gotten the highest scores in all rounds, he is the only one that got "pass" from all the juries in all rounds and as far as I know that is very rare in whole Chopin Competition history. Audience: AND the most important one that he was an audience favorite… He had gotten a standing ovation with his unconventional Chopin playing in Poland, where people are born into listening Chopin. Before the final, the whole Warsaw was guessing that Bruce would win and he should. Star quality: I can say with confidence that he was the one with big star potential in Chopin Competition 2021. His stage presence, charisma, connecting with audience signaled a top tier potential star. His Carnegie Hall debut was sold out and he played 7 encores to an enthusiastic audience. Audience loves him and doesn’t want to let him go. Please tell me how many classical musicians under 30 have this kind of effect on audience. So… he won, Chopin Institute won, Fazioli won and the audience won! The End.

Absolutely! On top of his perfect and effortless mastery of the instrument, his vast range of moods, his unique and natural voice makes him the most promising pianist of his generation (Yuja Wang being the ultimate star of the previous generation). Can't wait to see him grow into his wonderful talents.

@@gugendir Sadly, classical music is a field in which being good looking triggers strong suspicions... Not naming names, but it has been used in the past to make up for a lack of talent... I would also argue that Kyohei Sorita was a strongly deserving candidate for the first prize... That was an exceptionally good year...
@gugendir
@gugendir Жыл бұрын
@@ltbrooklynny You know, I even read some say 2021 was a weak year so Bruce got it is easy… I mean, since when Chopin Compt. is easy and how was that weak? Imo, it was one of the best finalist lineup which every pianist had their own style…. From Bruce to Sorita to Eva to Gadjiev… So everyone can have their own favorites of course. Bruce won because all the reasons I mentioned above but even if he didn’t, he would find his way to a solid international career. I bet he was getting invitations after that 3rd stage performance. People forget that not every winner has biggest career (like Avdeeva), a bronze winner (Trifonov) can go more global..

The thing with Bruce Liu is he plays his music out of sheer joy to share with his audience first and not concern with competing with his fellow contestants. In one of his interviews, he said at the Chopin competition, after each round he played in , he was ready with his luggage to fly home not expecting to advance to the next round. He’s just happy and feel fulfilled that he’s able to play all the music he has prepared regardless of winning or not!

I admire Đặng Thái Sơn because of his interpretation but also of him winning the X Chopin Competition.Đặng Thái Sơn also said in an interview that he was really grateful to even competed and played with the whole orchestra in the final round and did not expect to win at all.Nonetheless,I can see Bruce’s similarities to Đặng Thái Sơn and I admire both of them for their deep interpretations and the competitive spirit about the competition despite winning.

In the first part the piano brings up two distinct characters talking one to another. They become one until the end, but the voices separation and distinct intonation stays there till the end. He was born with that, no way to achieve it by merely practice. So much clarity, accents on small details, phrasing, poetry in the second part, sparse pedalling as unheard before, allowing staccato in the left hand with flowing legato on the right hand, crystal clear sound with fantastic control in pianissimo; it was impossible not to win. This guy is a phenomenon, he will be talked about for sure.

This concerto has many wonderful interpretations which I like many of them with different reasons but I turn back to Bruce’s this performance every time. Especially his 3rd movement is just incomparable for me. So distinctive, so fresh, so fluid, full of energy. Spring flowing through his fingers! There were some criticism that audience started clapping and standing up before orchestra’s ending but after a year, even just listening from KZbin, I understand why couldn’t wait until the very end.

@Maria B The NFM reported this… “Commentators paid special attention to the exceptionally high level of this year's edition. The participants were characterized not only by technical efficiency and musicality. Among them, one could also find many exceptional musical personalities. The greatest of them won. According to journalist Adam Rozlach, "the whole performance [of Bruce Liu] was a display of art, skill, and sense of Chopin's music". The director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, Artur Szklener admitted that the first prize for the Canadian "was beyond any doubt from the beginning of the discussion after the final". The journalist Jacek Hawryluk also spoke in a similar vein, noting that "Liu was a definite favorite of the competition from the first stage." According to Krzysztof Stefanski, the Canadian “is a complete pianist. He has a phenomenal technique that allows him to bring out the most amazing colors from the piano ”. That is extremely high praise for an extremely gifted pianist. A most worthy winner of the 1st prize!

Congrats Bruce for a deserved win!! We haven't had a first prize-winner from North America for the past 50/51 years (previously Garrick Ohlsson in 1970) and Bru e Liu broke the ice!!
