I’m by no means a professional pianist or a renowned judge, but Bruce has been my favorite pianist throughout this competition. I love the way he takes a musical breath after passages and phrases, he definitely knows what he’s doing. There’s something fresh yet brilliantly artistic about his music. He definitely brings new sounds to pieces that I haven’t heard of in many of Chopin’s pieces. He’s definitely my pick for the final.

No wonder he is the winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition which just concluded. Listen to his 3rd (at the 3:02 mark) and 4th Mazurkas (at the 5:27 mark). They are absolutely sonic poetry, with a delicacy of touch, gradations of tonal dynamics and subtle nuances which he seemed to coax from the Fazioli piano so effortlessly. His technique is solid, but very much tied to the music -- that is, no show of virtuosity just for the heck of it. This is really sublime interpretation of Chopin. I haven't seen/heard a pianist so totally as one with his instrument as Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu in this 3rd round of the Chopin Competition. Congratulations!!! 👏👏👏

Middle section glorious .The most thing and truly emotional engaging musician I've heard in decades . Sensitive , with the right temperament . Every phrase has depth and meaning ! We know we have a genius when not everyone can catch this guy's genius at first sight. He shocked the audience. He shocked the jury. He shocked me with his first round performance and every other performance since then. Yet, many who can't understand his approach seems to dislike the result. That's the genius sign. You have to polarize in order to remain fresh. Both Liu and Garcia did that. I'm sorry for those who aren't able to understand his playing, but the jury wasn't wrong at all. In fact, for me that's the best result in years.
@ge.m6239
@ge.m6239 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that he shocked everybody. And some liked that feeling, some didn’t. But I feel like everybody is trying to figure out how to fit him in classical world and what he will bring into it. I would say he will definitely bring (in addition to his immense talent , of course) a certain charisma and character. Both on and off stage. I saw this more clearly when he refused to go stage a second time after the final stage, saying that because this is a competition not a concert, it would be unfair to other contestants. Even though some others went a second time and a few ones hoped for the call, which is okay of course. But he didn’t bend to that temptation and i can see a strong character there that reflects to his artistry which is one of the certain qualities of a true star. So i think (I hope) he will make his own way and name in music scene with his style. There always be some people who will not like it but as Bruce himself said, “people will like you, and some others don’t so I will be myself.”

@@ge.m6239 I couldn't agree more. Although I wished him to come back to the stage cause even the conductor called him, now after reading your comment I changed my mind. He was absolutely polite about it, very down to earth, I think he wasn't even believing in what was happening to him. That's one of the biggest ovation in the history of this competition, maybe even the biggest, but he choosed to stay humble and patient to not outdraw the other contestants. Finally, he had his moment on the winner's concert. I can't wait to hear more from him, personally I would like to hear an entire Chopin album with other pieces that he didn't play. Would be a great debut!

I agree... It is hard to convince everybody when a person's interpretation is so unique, playing with fire and unconventional (or less stereotypical) but to those who are convinced will be superbly impressed. He was not my favourite from his first and second stage performances but what he demonstrated from his op.2 here is simply out of the world... I think he is a very intelligent person in order to make such acute changes in different passages.

@@pakyukwokalex3683 Absolutely! Me, for instance, I don't listen to Zimerman. Even though he's a genius and regarded as Chopin's greatest interpreter of the modern time, I just don't match with his playing, although I would never deny his excellence. It's a matter of taste, I'd rather listen to older masters such as Guiomar Novaes- my very favorite- than him. By the way, I was pretty sure I was your subscriber! I really enjoy your playing and it's nice to read such comments from an accomplished pianist like you.

@@Thiago-px9ev Yes, i would have liked him to go again and shower with applause and appreciation and confused when he didn’t. But when I listened his reason behind it, I kind of liked and appreciated it. He didn’t do it to be rude but being thoughtful and respectful to other contestants. And he explained it like the most normal thing, no big deal. But of course the audience made him closed the gap to call him gazillion times at yesterday’s gala!😆 I think same thing will happen tonight and tomorrow and his hundreds of concerts following that. On Twitter, i read that a Polish composer (Joanna Nazarowa, i think) even claimed that he will earn more than the Beatles or Pavarotti!! 😃 I don’t think it will go that far but he gives that impression to people, so it is a good example peoples excitement about him, i think. People just can’t get enough of him, it is amazing to witness really.
@ge.m6239
@ge.m6239 3 жыл бұрын
I watched his interview with Polish radio and he says that he hopes the conductor will be able to remember his ideas about the concerto. That made me really excited because I feel like if he really plays what he has in mind, he can be the obvious winner (I mean, let alone the audience, have you seen the faces of juries after his third stage?) No disrespect to other really talented pianists in the competition, they are all very good. I just feel like Bruce is in a position that he will be the one who will decide/shape his own faith (except competition politics, of course, who knows what will go down behind the curtains :)) In any case, I hope this will be a perfect step for his future (and hopefully very successful) career. As one of the commentators here said, no matter what, he is truly the star of this competition. Good luck for the final stage!!

Aimi is more famous, and so is Sorita and Nehring. Bruce came as an underdog. He actually lost to Nehring in 2019 at the Rubinstein competition. I don't like Nehring's playing at all. Some person said he seems to play for the jury, not the audience and I completely agree. Bruce, otherwise, blew my mind since his first state. I knew he was the winner. Simply outstanding!
@Algorox

@@Thiago-px9ev I agree. Nehring's third round was underwhelming. I assume Aimi and Nehring were popular because they were finalists in the last Chopin Competition. I have no musical knowledge whatsoever but I'm Polish and I've heard Chopin's Funeral March like gazillion times, so it became the most banal piece with no surprising points... And then yesterday Bruce Liu played it and somehow turned it into a whole different experience that I haven't expected at all. I was truly moved. Fingers crossed for the big final now!

If we are talking about Funeral March, my favorite is Alexander Gadjev. His interpretation was more heartcatchig, for me, than Bruce Liu. I could say that is like from crying woman point of view. Bruces version was more powerfull, like Imperial March. I could say that is like from angry man with tightened fists point of view. And that soud of Fazioli piano bases...

Bruce has conquered me. After listening to everyone in the last 3 stages, I am convinced he is the best of the best. It took more than just his enthralling funeral march to convince me. Liu was stellar in all 3 rounds. From his Scherzo in E , his etude op. 10/4, his Ballade, the marzurkas, his waltzes, to his B- minor sonata. He is worthy of following the long list of legendary winners. From Pollini, to Argerich, to Zimerman to Cho. Bravissimo! 👏👏👏👏👏

I feel Liu had a perfect balance of musicality, drama and artistry in his Scherzo and sonata - along with uncanny dexterity and dynamic range. He has everything needed to win. IMO, it’s Aimi who slightly overdid the drama in a few of her preludes.

Zastanawiam się i strasznie mnie to intryguje, jak to jest, w jaki sposób te dźwięki materializują się w głowie i w jakiej postaci? I can see why he won the competition. Dynamic, very smooth transition from soft to loud keys or between staccato and slurs using pedal; very energetic and in absolute control- technically he seemed to be able to play faster than his opponents at very loud volume when necessary without any rough edges as all the notes are smoothly connected. physically he seems to have noticeably greater endurance and stronger and faster fingers than other finalists, which allows him to play aggressively at full throttle until the very end.

It is my very favourite of Chopin’s because I adore ballet as well as Chopin’s music, and this is used for the Royal Ballet’s “Month in the Country”, which is such an amazing ballet by Frederick Ashton he choreographed in the 1980s on Lynn Seymour and Anthony Dowell.
