Had the opportunity yesterday to see and listen to Martin's performance of Waltz As-dur in a rather small concert / theatre hall in Madrid. Absolutely fabulous! It was like listening to Chopin himself playing for a group of friends...in love, impresssed and very very moved...olé!!!
Simply, he makes everyone happy. I keep coming back to his waltz as a pick me up :)

He brought joyful Spanish sunshine in the competition. I couldn’t stop smiling from the moment the camera showed him at the backstage (love to see his very tight vest lol) till the end of performance. He showed genuine love for the music and made me happy. Whenever I am down, I would like to come back to listen to this. The length of applause shows how much the audience loved him, everyone is smiling! I really hope to see him in the final, although I am aware that the jury could split. In addition, I would like to mention that, just like Glenn Gould, he is the best singer in this piano competition🤣

The Chopin Competition, which selects the most Chopin-like interpretation, is the least Chopin-like performance. However, if Chopin, who would have recovered from his illness after the liberation of Poland, plays his song again, it will feel like this. I like Chopin and have listened to Chopin for 20 years, but I am very attracted to this completely different Chopin. I think it's gold.

@@caphaddock1126 sorry, after a couple of years it’s hard to remember🙂 I guess he was perceived as a people pleaser, a crowd entertainer among solemn professionals. Experts on Polish TV also made fun of his facial expressions as unbecoming given the nature of Chopin’s music. All in all, it was painful to hear those degrading comments, and I remember the feeling of wicked satisfaction when he qualified to the finals. Only after his interpretation of a concerto did they thaw towards him.

I usually hate hearing the second scherzo because of how overplayed and overrated it is, but I actually enjoyed hearing Garcia play it. As for the other pieces, listening to Garcia play them made me love them even more than I already did. For me, he's a great musician, because only great musicians can make me feel this way about repertoire I know intimately.
