A friend gave me a “Chopper 1” axe a few years ago and I’d never tried it being happy with my splitting mail for many years. I had just cut some standing dead ash for firewood, still in good shape but basically seasoned. My mall bounced off the larger pieces at least three times before creating a crack. Literally with the “Chopper 1” it broke the large pieces in one swing. From that point on, I use my mall to split the piece into smaller chunks but for the initial split on a large piece, the Chopper works excellent. I’ve split about a chord so far using this method and no broken springs or any damage to it at all. I was surprised at how well it works. I think it’s best to have both tools and use them accordingly but will continue to use the Chopper. No offense Thoren, you’re awesome but I’ll continue using it since I’m getting older and any advantage I can have is a good one…….

You can also see that if it doesn't go deep enough to reach the moving parts, it will just get stuck because it has a narrow blade up until that point. The splitting maul doesn't get stuck nearly that much.

Oh Man, these things work Great. Don't listen to the clown in the video. Only a Clown wood 😏 hit anything with a sharp object at a 45 degree angle like that. They call it an axe, but it's closer to a maul. And you can even find old old old ones on eBay beaten to death, but not dead,.. and still in one piece. I used these when they came out. And the biggest problem I remember, is lending out for others to try. Because you're gonna have to go back and TAKE IT BACK 😂 Makes me miss our fireplace even more seeing these videos. But not clowns afraid of it's Sound. He'd probably give the Garrand a 1 out of 5 stars because of the PING 🤣 Nothing is perfect. But these things were damn close in my thousands of cords experience, as a Freakin Boy Scout in the 70's. They have a website, but not much to see, except a short slo-mo on KZbin.

What's misleading is putting chopper 1 in the tile instead of the knock offs brand name. The knock off which was more than likely way cheaper will close to always be a much poorer quality than the name brand. Chopper 1 should have been mentioned tbh.

How about a hydraulic splitting axe🤔. On second thought I think I'll just stick with what I know works. BTW, I ordered my first handle from Bever Tooth Handle Co. for a maul with a single bit axe eye. I'm absolutely floored at the quality of this handle; it's everything a handle should be. I definitely know where I'm getting replacement handles from now on.

I’ve watched a Couple of these videos, and it seems to me that this mechanical axe ( The chopper ) is intended for smaller pieces of wood, so that it would be painfully easy to chop them, especially for an amateur wood cutter ? And to get the smaller pieces; you’d use a chainsaw first ! ? Of course, better solution would be to use a guillotine type woodcutter ?

I can see him whacking off somebody's leg someday as his axe goes flying off to the side. That's just stupid. Used one for a thousand cords or more I'd say. Dude purposely trying to find something wrong with it and complains so much about the sound of the spring. Then he says, "let's bring in a real axe." Yeah, after you stiked it multiple times with the first axe of course the second axe will split it. That's the equivalent of someone saying "I loosened it up for you." This dude tries to act like an alpha but he whines like a beta. I wouldnt be surprised during the cut clip, he purposely broke the spring. I want an HONEST REVIEW not a WHINY REVIEW. Just tell me the pros and cons, not why you're so triggered and offended.

The Best Crap Axe Ever. As someone that actually split probably a thousand cords with one of the ole Choppers. Never broke one. And never swung a sharp object at anything sitting at a 45 degree Angle,.. like an idiot. I'd put it up against anything. Nothing is perfect, but these were damn close. This clown above, wood 😏 probably give the Garrand a 1 out of 5 stars because of the PING 😂 If you ever get a chance to try one, you'll see. We sold cord wood back in the day for the Boy Scouts. So we had 2 after a while. Because the only problem we had, was letting others use it, and having to go back and TAKE IT 😏 Don't know why these are making a comeback in video form, because it makes me miss my fireplace,.. and the ole Chopper 1. Because it literally was fun to use 👍

I suggested to listen to your old timer.... But you don't..... Remember I told you where to hit that round . You hit it right on the corner.... First you inspect to see where your heavy knots are.... You're hitting it right in the center.... You need to start the tear or the break or the split going from the outer edge.. and you do that by hitting on the corner so you can expand the growth rings or on the radius a little bit back from the corner or outer edge.... And wrap a bungee cord around the whole thing loosely.... Then your pieces won't fall over.... Then you just walk around the block... And split on the radius closest to you don't reach across you'll destroy your handle... And it can also hurt your wrists when it breaks through if it comes down on the handle... Bend your knees .....bend at the waist and reach out about 18 in up the handle and push as hard as you can hang on tight with the other hand... Start your push when it's at about 45°from hitting... right before it hits you can increase the velocity of that maul . And there's three more tricks you can use but one of them takes a tremendous amount of coordination.... After you get it split in half... Don't split it in quarters.. immediately start taking your small pieces off one of the halves... The half acts like an anchor... And when you swing you don't swing straight down perpendicular to the Earth you come down at 10°maybe even 15 ... This not only uses the wedging effect of the splitting mall but it acts like a hammer and knocks that piece off of the heavy half round.. and you have a bungee wrapped around there so the pieces don't fall over.... Can you walk around one or two steps and strike it again... So when you're done you walked all the way around the chopping block. And your Pisces didn't fall over once and he didn't have to bend over and pick them up. There's a KZbinr called buckin Billy Ray Smith and he uses that other flopping method that takes a lot of coordination... I think it's dangerous. Another thing that works good is use a froe ... With a sledgehammer.... Are the tool they give you to hit it with.... If you do that make sure you have a couple of steel wedges in case you embed your fro... That way you can split your froe out of there if it gets stuck. It works good on real straight Grain rounds. Watch all those guys split shakes. Then you know what I'm talking about.
@tedanderson463
@tedanderson463 10 ай бұрын
Yeah wearing glasses is a good idea... If you lose one eye you only got one left.... Eye Care starts with I care.... If you want to save yourself a lot of work get some steel splitting wedges and a sledgehammer. And go pick up a shake splitting froe....... And if you get it stuck don't pull on the handle very hard split yourself out of there with a couple of steel wedges... I seen a guy split some 3 ft diameter cottonwood with a shake splitting froe. It works on other straight rounds also. Just put it right across the diameter..... And watch how fast it splits.

I was watching a video you made about about 7 months ago trying to warn people not to travel in blizzard... Conditions.... You had some amazingly helpful information about the dangers of it.... The importance of keeping your exhaust pipe cleared out in case blizzard buried car... And traps the carbon monoxide around the vehicle.... I never thought of that.... And the other thing about causing people to come and have to find you and risk their life... Sometimes it snows so hard you can't see the road... And you have to stop and then you're really vulnerable.
