Not really all that my guy. Elects athlete control is a bit much. I started splitting wood when I was 12 and remember being that impressed that my dad never missed a swing but by the time I was 18 after a few seasons of splitting I wasn’t missing a swing either. Just practice and muscle memory

For those wondering what axe he is using, it is the ECHO HA-1363 3.5 lb. felling axe with 36 in. handle.

Took my first tree down with an axe the other day! Wasn't nearly as big but it definitely gave me a lot of respect for what you do. I was so out of breath! I cant even imagine how you felt after this 😳

@charizard4410 I'm actually a tree climber/ arborist, so I've got all my own gear. People definitely should try it out though! This was just my first time taking down a tree with an axe, and it was awesome!

Hey, a quick tip from my grandfather: Use a rough sandpaper to grind off the coating on the axe handle. That way you will never get blisters on your hands again.

​@@BollocksToThatBasically yes, but even untreated wood can give you blisters, it just shifts easier than a varnished handle. A true craftsman doesn't put varnish on the handle, just oil to preserve the wood

Buddy, former timber faller here. I love what your doing but that thing is full of widowmakers. One of our skidder operators was almost killed by one like that. Top broke and came down through the cab. It pinned him through his hips. It paralyzed him. Everyone gets hurt out there at some point. Stay safe out there.

I live rural, and spend a LOT travelling to and from the gym 6 days a week... I have a ton of pine on my land... Im seriously considering adding some axe work, both chopping and splitting to my training regimen.... its free, it gets me firewood, and clears my land to build more trails.

Very unlikely, that wedge he made at the beginning is called a notch cut. Making that wedge at the beginning ensures that the opening of the wedge is where the tree falls. If you look up a notch cut you can find diagrams

@@jaafarnasrallah2941 like the dude above me said, he never actually cuts all the way through, the tree bends towards the notch and then snaps off when it's near the ground, so the likelihood of it slipping is incredibly low.

​@@ThorenBradley Yeah, the axe constantly hitting on the back cut can cause top of the tree to break off and fall on you. A large bow saw or a one man crosscut saw for making the back cut would still make for a cool video and good workout. Thanks for the video! Keep chopping 'em down.

I was able to find a Brady and a W B & Co. broad axe not too long ago. I was wondering if you had any interest in antique axes. Not looking to sell just asking. I just recently found your channel. The W B & Co looks to still have quite a bit of tool steel on the edge, and it looks to be hammer forged on.

😮 a concern is tho if Thoren is not replanting...just chopping down trees just for firewood is not a long term solution...what happens if all trees are cut down.....for every tree he cuts down Thoren should plant a new one.

Just grab a chainsaw and finish the job in a much more time efficient way. This was just to see the older way of doing things. Luckily we have chainsaws now.

That’s a hard ass tree. I’ve cut many like that with a chainsaw. Center, or heart, of that conifer is great for fire starting (fatwood).
