We had a field do that 3 years ago but nearly as bad as yours. It was late planted so it didn’t have near the root system as it usually would and we got a nasty wind that laid it over in a tangled mess. Dad had to chop it one way one row at a time. It worked and we got almost all of it picked up. We were sure glad to done with that mess.

Ouch, that's a rough hit. Not only a cut in yield, but a slow and somewhat tedious job getting the material through the chopper. Nick, North West Farmer (Oregon)

Yes the chopper likes to have lots of material going through it, cutting like this the chop quality really suffers. Better than nothing though.

We had relatives that got hit by that derecho (massive wide spread wind event across midwest USA where winds hit 100+mph). They actually used their 20' flail shredder/windrower (that they normally use to harvest corn fodder) to suck up, shred & windrow the corn silage. Then they went with their SP chopper & hay pickup to chop & blow into wagons. Best of luck to you!

Looks like a pain! Heck a pickup head might have gone quicker YIKES! Quality probably poor too, plus probably grabbing more roots too? Do you think you have enough to get by?
@macfarms
@macfarms 2 жыл бұрын
Quality will be down for sure and likely more toxins than we usually see, waiting on the analysis. Wasn't too bad for grabbing roots still seemed to cut off what it picked up ok. We will be buying a couple loads of bales to make the winter but we aren't as bad off as we initially thought.

I bet the operator was mentally wore out after a day of fighting that mess. There just ain’t nothing left on those stalks.
@macfarms
@macfarms 2 жыл бұрын
There was stalks where the leaves were shredded right off the plant and the cob broke off on the ground. Unreal what wind can do. Dad fell asleep once or twice running the chopper in it haha
