I live in an urban area not too far away from a big urban city with a bigger national airport next to it and an even bigger international seaport next to that; you get the point. A buddy of mine had me over a few weeks ago for a couple of sat night little parties he was havin on an off. After using up all the big bix store 2x6s and 4x4s for the mini bonfires he had, I noticed a couple of ~18" wide logs of Willow tree I think, I dont know really. I grabbed a carpenters hammer and an electricians chizel from his garage and went ham on that sucker most of the night while everyone was going bottoms up on the drinks. Man, I felt good the next day.

I split eucalyptus. It's hard and un forgiving. And when I started several years ago, I thought about a log splitter. I'd definitely need one 32 tons plus. A used one cost about $700. A rented one just didn't make sense. Gas, maintenance, lugging and lifting the rounds into the machine. The math didn't add up. I vowed to split by hand ever since. My friends think I'm crazy and they don't come around much anymore. Thank you Buckin Army for being my family.

Some people pay good money for gym memberships. They spend time traveling back and forth and working out at the gym, and what they get for it is, maybe, some health benefit. BR Spends some time busting firewood, gets his workout at no cost and with a product at the end. Since I retired, I tell people "I don't need a gym membership. I'm a homesteader." I swing axes, shovel dirt, move timber - I do physical work that has a product as well ;) And while I've spent much of my life being a competitive athlete, I'm in the best shape of my life now at 63.

Log splits are also for disabled bikers that can't swing an axe no more... I swung an axe from the age of ten until the motorcycle wreck that end a big part of my life at 53 years of age... Some friend I don't know who sent me a 21 ton log splitter. It was the best gift I ever received. We couldn't find anyone to come split the wood we need for to winter, so we ended up getting old skids to cut up to burn. When all the while we had at least 5 cords of wood that just needed someone to split it... So I now hook the splitter up to my lawn tractor and pull it out the the side field where there's a big pile of wood that my tree trimmer biker buddy brings me. This year he's been VERY busy this is the biggest mound of wood he ever brought me. And he cuts it all to 16inches just to make my life easier... I split what I can then some friends come lift the logs I can't lift.... Be blessed my friend.... BBE...

Hi Billy I usually cut up blue gum for fire wood and some is knotty af, I used to use a maul as a wedge knocked in with another 8lb maul but laziness been my guiding principle that was to 🐌 slow. So I worked on a new technique, the straight arm helicopter with a maul. What I do is with a straight arm only using one hand always swing the axe 🪓 back and fourth a few times until it's swinging to about shoulder height then with a straight Arm swing behind and over my head and down in a single movement and with only one arm. The maul is really flying at this point and when it connects to wood knot or whatever It won't bounce because so much momentum, the wood flies apart... literally can send parts 30ft. I have not found any log to present a problem now ;-). I love watching your vids, years back you motivated me to do get some old saws and deal to the 50m tall gums 👍👍 Thanks buddy and please stock up for the depression we are entering. Food and fuel and everything is about to become scarce so get what you might need in the next 7 years now. Thanks for another great video! Always fun to watch. I am also partial to axes over log splitters. But then I got a load of camphor wood given to me. The cuts were about a foot and a half in diameter. Even though it is only mediocre fire wood, it is the hardest stuff to split that I've ever encountered. The grain pattern is like a mesh. It's easy enough to chip pieces off the side, but when you try to go perpendicular to the growth rings it's like concrete! Well, in the end a friend saw that stuff and told me he would pay for me to get a log splitter. So I got a 22 ton splitter and it goes thru the camphor like nothing! Since then I've come to realize there is a time and a place for splitters.

@@henryholliday1 I got the old splitting wedges and the 8 pound sledge out the other day. I have some big nasty oak to bust up enough to lift them on the splitter. The splitter stands up. I don't like using it that way. I would toss the wedge into a crack and give it a wack. 3 swings and the wedge would bounce out. Lol. Ugh. I finally scooted them big ones close to the splitter with the tractor and stood the splitter up. I went to the woods last night. Got up this morning, fixed breakfast and cut some old oak up. Loaded 15 logs up and went home. One smack with an axe and they just pop apart. Almost silly to use the splitter. This other oak,, it's silly to not use the splitter.

Excellent splitting video! Really liked yer choice of axes! I think yer wood splits much harder than our hardwoods! You use the exact same work around that we do here on the east coast!

So, I am sitting here in germany, watching random stuff on youtube and stumble across this guy. So relaxing to watch. A kind man, minding his passion and sharing it with us. I don´t know what your intentions with these videos are, but if I had a hard day, I just watch your videos. The most statisfying one was the "laser beam axe"- video. So good! Much love

Enjoying your videos. I also split wood exclusively with an Ax (no wood splitter machine) above 9,000' elevation in Northern New Mexico mostly banging out pines and firs with lots of knots. You don't need a gym membership for a workout. After about 100 thousand swings you start to learn what Mr. Smith is showing us here. Keep the large knot on the bottom and strike the rounds strategically. Whacking at the center heart is too soft to get a crack and makes the ax head stick hard sometimes. I try to hit 6 o'clock and then up at 11 or 1 depending which way the crack develops. A side strike near 9 or 3 o'clock on the round works with a "flick" or twist of the handle for a glance spit of the sides. Once you get the hang of the technique the work goes fast and progress stacks up. Be safe. Be aware where your blade goes.

Sunday morning, waking up with a coffee and watching this video while rain is pouring outside. This is a perfect moment, thanks for these video's. I'm not an axe man like you. I mean... I have only one, I like it and it get's the job done. A woodstove get's you warm at least 3 times: 1) cutting the tree and bringin' the logs home, 2) splitting the wood and 3) burning it and enjoy the warmth. So I do use an axe to split the wood. It get's me tired physically, but gives so much energy mentally. There's not a woodsplitter in the world that brings me the same feeling.
