Blackmore w/ Purple was such an interesting combination, especially his interplay w/ Jon Lord. The lesson covers important essential, well done!!!!!!! By far the best YT channel for guitarists. David rules!!!!

Great Chordplay, David!! I'm 62 and grew up on Deep Purple, Zep, etc. Saw Ritchie 4 times in concert between Deep Purple and Rainbow. He is an awesome live performer! Thank-you for this lesson!!!!

How I started playing guitar was watching Rainbow playing a live concert on MTV(remember those days?) and seeing Ritchie ripping it up and saying that's who I want to play like and then got into DP when they reformed back in 84 and was hooked ever since.

Brilliant. The padding out of the chords on Highway Star is a really useful tip for cover bands who don't have a keyboard player too.

Ritchie is such an underrated guitar player these days, but he was so influential to guitar players who grew up in the 70s-90s. One of his best songs was Gypsies Kiss. For me, there is no Deep Purple without Ritchie.

Aside from the whole deal being a cool one to watch no less than a few more times to say the least, the 'Knocking...' tune how you played it is the closest per the tonality. Like it. Rock on! And if You can toss Bolin into a mix episode in the future that would be cool stuff as well.

Also @ 17:58 That’s the best part of rock music man , it may of initially been written by Mr.Blackmore but you make it sound better to you.. that’s how some cover songs are better than the original tune !! Deep purple made so many great tunes I know it's hard to pick their best. ANY and every new guitar player (at least in my era) strummed out smoke on the water. But Hush and Lazy might be their best. Blackmore was a pompous ass or Rainbow might have been as big....Stone Cold, Power and Jealous lover were some of my favorite rock tunes ever. So many bands go nowhere once someone thinks the band is them (Cars, Grand Funk etc) and not a team effort. I think it probably takes all the fun out of the music...at least for me. Thanks for all your efforts and knowledge. I watch em

Ritchie can come up with the best riffs and rhythm ideas, but then reverts back to lines based on octaves, as if he has no more ideas. And then he says he gets bored by playing rhythm guitar. Great lead guitarist. One of my favorites.

I remember getting a Ritchie Blackmore guitar lesson book with backing tracks on a cd in the late 90's. Loved that thing and loved to mess with friends who would ask if I knew Smoke on the water so I'd rip into the verse riff and solo ignoring the intro lol.

Nice video. But try to play mandrake root riff with forth. Ritchie played it this way. You see the difference. Thanks.
@stevet.49744 жыл бұрын
Another great lesson. Mandrake Root was a great choice, I guess I had to see you play it to fully realize what a crusher that is.That tune came before their golden time... easy to overlook. The Tommy Bolin album... I think I listened to it like 3 times and never went back. I'm reakizing that's a mistake though, I think I had a inherent bias against the album because it just seemed a continuation of Purple getting away from hard rock. I liked Spectrum a lot so I'm going to check it out again. I want to punch myself in the face for never realizing the C note on the G chord in Woman from Tokyo.... I was doing an F bass note with my thumb thinking I was cool but instaed.. completely ridiculous. I was listening to Purple from '74 in London like a bootleg I don't know what it is but Holy Schnikers Blackmore is just ripping on his leads... FAST freakin walls of notes.... Now THAT I would like to know how hes doing it... if you get a chance check that out.... you know what I'm talking about. Check out his solo from Lay Down Stay Down as an example. He ruled back then... no one could touch him in least in regards to the raw fast soloing. There's so many elements all together and it comes at you like a supercomputer barfing information.

There used to be a European website which listed the best musicians determined by voters. All the Deep Purple members were in the top 5 in vocals and every instrument except for Glover. Purple is huge in Europe, Asia and South America. They lost traction in America because Americans don’t like heavy Hammond organs in their hard rock music and they are not much into progressive music.

I love Ritchie, but he never uses "fat" chords, or tries to make his rhythms sound bigger (as you say, because he always has keys in the band). He uses the root 1 instead of the root 6 (i.e. no barring). He doesn't even like playing rhythm guitar beyond his diad 4th riffs. For Tommy, Dealer's cool, but would have loved to have seen Gettin' Tighter. Hotter/funkier IMO.

Yeah I noticed this too - I transcribed/learned Highway Star pretty in depth a couple years ago for a show I played in and that prechorus is for sure just the simple Am7 x055xx shape - it's the organ that's adding the other color notes. The ascending blues thing after it is all single notes on the A string pulling off to open for the pickup beats too. Isolated track here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoLTkIGCnJaGfKs
