I was hoping "My Michelle" would be featured! What an ominous, menacing intro... Appetite for Destruction is in my top 3 rock albums of all time, so it's 100% cool to load up on that one. It is one hell of an album/era.

Yeah, that opening is super sinister. It definitely helps usher in the extremely dark and quite disturbing subject matter of the tune. But it's also very killer, so there's that.

The "Appetite for Destruction" album is so much fun! An article/interview of Slash in Guitar Player Magazine pointed out that G 'n R almost always introduces a brand new backing riff (not used anywhere else in the song) for Slash's great solos! Thanks, David!

"Mr. Brownstone" is the definitive Guns N' Roses song. And you might agree with me, David, when I say that Slash was the last great guitar hero in the classic mold. You can see a Jimmy Page to Joe Perry to Slash kinda evolution, if that makes any sense (although Slash has been quoted as saying that Mick Taylor was his biggest influence.) Great video as always, dude.

After this lesson the required reading is the autobiography 'Slash'. Pretty heavy stuff. GnR in the early days was to me like the second coming of Aerosmith after Aerosmith kicked drugs and became vegan or whatever and started writing pop ballads and losing their edge. GnR was like a very talented punk band.

I really like your channel. Great presentation and insights. When you mentioned seeing old concerts on MTV that triggered a memory from the early-mid 80's; do you remember seeing Triumph in concert on there? Are you into Rik Emmet at all? He is one of the most versatile, melodic and underrated guitarists ever - plus he sings. It's almost like he was Neal Schon and Steve Perry rolled into one - haha! Have you ever thought about doing a Late Night Lesson on his stuff? Thanks!

Thank you brother! Maybe it's cliché, but Slash is why I play guitar! I was 8 when Appetite came out and I remember riding the bus home from school listening to the radio on my Walkman. That's when I heard Paradise City for the first time and I new then I would not leave my parents alone until they bought me a guitar!

Nice review. Early GnR were so cool and as you said a bit different from the other rock bands of the time. They had that classic rock influence (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith) but also had a punk influence (in sound to a degree but more so in attitude). New York dolls, the stooges, dead boys, Sex Pistols come to mind. I was in 9th grade when I saw the ritz show and I taped it and watched it over and over ha. Loved slash’s guitar style. Dirty blues rock. He definitely gets a lot of the pentatonic scale. Would love to see you go over a few of slash’s classic solos.

I'm huge GnR fan and I'd recommend some cool lead licks in songs Locomotive, Don't Damn Me and Get In The Ring. All their songs have cool stuff in rhythm and lead sections, full of nuances, that's why imo their music is so catchy and nice to listen to. Thanks again keep it up ;)

Appetite for Destruction was a breathe of rancid air in amongst all that clean (weak-ass) Glam Metal of the late 80's. GnR headed out to support AFD just as I started GIT in March of '87. Flyers everywhere in Hollywood. I agree with the 'Live at the Ritz' shows on MTV...The Cult, GnR, and White Lion were some of the best hard rock shows they had. I had GnR , White Lion, and Queensryche live in Japan on constant VHS rotation. Good memories. Always appreciate the effort.

6:36 that totally comes from noodling around with the natural minor scale, concentrating on one of the modes, and, using the open string pedalling as the tonic...it looks so intricate when someone else does it, but, when you or I do it, it comes totally "naturally" and "spontaneously..." no need to write down on sheet music, just partake in the Lord's good herbs, and, let your mind weave in and throughout the strings and frets...

One of my favorite songs ever written was when Chris Cornell joined Slash for the song _Promise._ Reminds me of what you might get if you combined The Beatles with Led Zeppelin. I was inspired to put it on now and I'm having chills run down my legs as I type this while listening. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4O4aZ2IjsahaJo Also, has Dave ever done a gear video where he talks about his setup(s)? He always has such a great tone, and although I know most tone comes from a players fingers, I'm very curious about what amp he's using in particular.
