Inspired by a true story from the Korean War, BAPTIZED BY FIRE is a short animated film adapted from the graphic novel HOLD THE LINE (www.amazon.com/Chosin-Hold-Li.... While delivering mail to the grunts of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, Private First Class Billy French is trapped in a massive surprise attack launched by the Communist Chinese Army. French must prove his mettle when the company’s position is overrun by hordes of enemy troops. Filmmakers and Marines Brian Iglesias and Anton Sattler based BAPTIZED BY FIRE on a true story shared with them during production of their documentary, CHOSIN.
About the Chosin Reservoir Campaign: In the winter of 1950, deep within the frozen mountains of North Korea, 15,000 U.S. Soldiers and Marines were surrounded and trapped by 120,000 Chinese soldiers. Despite the odds, the Marines refused to surrender and fought their way 78 miles to the sea and rescued 98,000 refugees. This tale of sacrifice and courage that contends with the story of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae as one of the most heroic feats in history.
Produced in partnership with Veterans Expeditionary Media and Hopr Studios. Story by Brian Iglesias, Max Uriarte, and Richard Meyer.

I had an uncle who was one of the Chosin Few. I had known since spending a summer with them at Ft Leonard Wood in 1965 that he was plagued with nightmares and periods of flashbacks, what we now call PTSD. A few years ago, just before he passed away, he asked me to go with him to the VFW. Over a couple of beers, he began telling me about the real horrors of that battle. Even though by then I was retired military myself, this was something he had never shared with anyone else, but knowing he hadn't long to live, it seemed he had to unburden himself. Most terribly was that he had, like Billy French, run out of ammo and came face to face with a Chinese troop who was also out of ammo. They wound up in hand-to-hand combat. He survived by strangling the Chinese soldier, squeezing the man's throat, holding the death grip while the man thrashed with all his own might, and watched the life extinguished from the man's eyes. He told me it seemed that took an eternity. He had never told anyone else about that fight.

Most of you people here are missing the deep symbolism behind it. The reason why the video paints the Chinese as horrible monsters, striking from the darkness, is because it's told from the point of view of a probably nineteen year old kid, young and fresh, who has no idea what's going on. He's been told that these men are monsters, and he's being attacked by them, in the dead of night. They're killing his friends, and he knows he needs to kill these monsters himself. Until, that is, he comes face to face with one. The scene at 2:12 is powerful, because at that point, the young kid is seeing someone probably just as young as he is, and probably wants to be there just as much as he does, which is to say, not at all. Both have been told that the other side are monsters, and both see each other as such until they come face to face in the glow of an explosion. It's when they realize that the opponents aren't monsters, they're humans too.

My grand dad was one of many student soldiers in Korean War. He used to tell me not much about it, but I still remember one story. His first kill. Government told him and his friends that North Koreans were brain washed, that they would say ‘Hail Kim’ when they die. In his first battle, he shot a North Korean with his rifle. He wasn’t older than my grand pa. He was about same age. And he didn’t say ‘Hail Kim’. Instead, in Korean he began to say ‘ma’. He called out for his ma for few more minutes, and my grandpa couldn’t squeeze the trigger once more.

To the people claiming this is propaganda I ask this: Were you in a situation where all you were told about those you fought were how horrible they were, what kind of evil deeds they did, and that they were about to beset upon you and all those you were trying to protect: How would YOU have seen them? This is the unfortunate nature of war. Not just in the violent death and chaos, but the perceptions it creates in desperation to survive. War, by it's very nature, is two sides hateful and afraid killing each other until one is left standing.

The reason the Chinese are portrayed as inhuman monsters in this video should be obvious.The video is from the perspective of P.F.C. Billy French, a young Marine trapped in a ferocious battle. In his mind, the Chinese are viewed as evil, nameless monsters who want to kill him and his friends, so they are portrayed as such in the video. It's also why when he comes toe-to-toe with a Chinese Soldier in the middle of the video, they are both suddenly illuminated and he views this particular soldier not as a ferocious adversary, but as another young man just as scared as he was. Everyone needs to stop jumping to conclusions. This is not American Propaganda, it's a video showing one perspective of the war, one of a scared P.F.C. who just wants to survive.

Jeremy Shiu The objective of the US was to stabilise the region and unite the 2 Koreas into one democratic state. The Chinese wanted to preserve their puppet in the region and inflict as much damage to the UN as possible. The Chinese achieved their goals, while the US didn't. If that's not losing, then I don't know what is.

It just didn't really go anywhere. A lot of people died and in the end the borders didn't change and everyone just went back to hating each other. It's not a clear unambiguous ''good triumphs over evil'' mythical narrative like WW2, and it's not a sobering, haunting clusterfuck that ended in failure like Vietnam. It was just a textbook war. From a strategic/tactical perspective it saw a lot of interesting advancements (helicopters were deployed and gave wounded soldiers amazing survival chances, jet fighters engaged jet fighters for the first time). Two large armies engaged in relatively conventional warfare, and pretty much everyone got what they wanted (USA and their capitalist allies slow the progress of communism, China and the USSR keep a buffer state between them and a capitalist country, South Korea gets to keep its sovereignty, North Korea gets to keep hers too, etc...) You can't build a strong narrative or mythology around that war.
@LawlessNate
@LawlessNate 5 жыл бұрын
The real reason is because it doesn't fit the narrative. The liberal narrative seeks to portray the United States as weak, evil, etc. The fact that the United States won Korean War, coupled with the fact that the victory wasn't undone after the fact like Vietnam, makes it a positive event in US history and therefore is ignored.

kitty cat That’s what happens when people try to shove their politics in everything they see. And I’m pretty sure by now you know it’s horrendous when it happens. Politics brings the absolute worst out of people and is fueled by nothing but hate, and it’s sad to see a beautiful, amazing animation like this with a message all about everyone being human just seen as an excuse for dumbasses in the comment section to dehumanize each other more. Trying to put politics in non political things is like smearing shit on a rose.

In the Battle of Chosin Lake, three armies of the 9th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteers engaged in a direct battle with the 10th Army of the United States Army, which had world-class weapons and equipment and distinguished battle achievements, in Chosin Lake area of Korea from November 27 to December 24, 1950, under the conditions of more than minus 20 degrees Celsius, frostbite and insufficient troops. It created the record of wiping out an entire regiment of American troops in the War against the United States and forcing the American ace force to experience the "longest retreat" in history. This battle recaptured the vast eastern area north of the 38th parallel. The simultaneous victory of the volunteers on both the eastern and western fronts changed the battlefield situation in one fell fell, becoming the turning point of the Korean War and laying the foundation for the victory of the armistice negotiations that eventually came.

He also told me about the time he jumped into the water to save this Dutch soldier who was drowning since he couldn’t swim, and had trouble climbing onboard.
