I know I shouldn't feel any degree of sympathy for him, but I can't help feeling a little heartbroken seeing this moment of self-reflection. I think what I'm feeling is akin to what a parent might feel finding out their child murdered someone (to a much lesser extreme of course.). I picture Chris as a child in the prime of his life with a sense of youthful optimism about the future and expectation that things would always be okay. At one point, he was just someone who was tired of being alone, too socially inept to find the friends and love he hoped for, but learned to love the attention he garnered all the same. Now he's at a point where he's crossed so many lines that he's robbed himself of any potential future of the normalcy and comfort he could have had if someone stepped in, took him offline, and gave him the sort of therapy he needed to better understand right from wrong and the intentions people may have. No one's failed him more than himself and he's entirely responsible for his actions, but in a general sense, I feel that the mean-spirited nature of people and neglect from his parents prevented him from ever finding the help he desperately needed. Not only is he vile for doing these things to his own mother, but for taking advantage of someone in a state of weakness who was too far gone to fight back. I don't think he deserves redemption and I don't think he should even have an online presence anymore, but I still desperately want him to get his act together and learn to be a better person. Even for someone like Chris, the idea of him being broken and alone for the remainder of his life disheartening to me, but it might be necessary if he never learns to take responsibility. I'm just so mixed up with this. I was there laughing along with everyone else in my youth and a small part of me regrets that, but I never wanted this to become of him.
