I was like "6 over 4. OK I think I can do that... kicks on the off beats, I'll have to practice for a while" Then you just casually threw it in there that "he plays it in 7/8"... HAHA... I'm laughing to hide the pain

THANKS: I'm 45 years old and I just starting playing 2 years ago. This is CLEARLY one of the BEST INSTRUCTIONAL CONCEPTS EVER!! I'm teaching myself by watching KZbin and listening to CD's and so I can't read music. So I'm trying to learn by ear but these guys play so fast, that its impossible for me to know whether there are doubles, triples, or whatever else is out. THANK YOU BRO!! OUTSTANDING!!!

***** Do you have any beginner's exercises that I can use to learn the different strokes so I can gain speed and learn the different licks and how to apply them to the kit?
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 жыл бұрын
+David Rodgers Well, if you're looking to build up some hand facility, I would say just spend a lot of time with a classic book like Stick Control and a metronome and just start grinding it out as much and as often as you can. That will help you to get all your singles, doubles, diddles, etc. down so you can move onto more complex stuff later.

I like the way you approach things. You are not trying to be bombastic KZbin style like so many others. You are very collected and systematic. Difference between your and Coleman's drumming (whom I adore, btw) from the prospective of musician who does not play drums but loves everything about them: 1. I think you could use more energy leaning towards the drum set, like you want to be a part of it. You seem to be bit separated from the set. It might be because of your mental make up. You seem to be a very nice, intelligent young man, bit on a colder side of things perhaps? Chris is so good because he leans into his drum set, not away from it. He constantly is in tune with it. 2. You play with your legs and arms. Chris plays from his core, the legs and arms just execute what his core initiates. My fantastic piano teacher who was a Russian, God rest her soul, always told me that you must be one with the instrument you play. There can never be you AND the instrument. There should be one instrument only... You must engage it, you must become a part of it. Then, and only then it will respond to you and interact with you in the way you so admire with CC. Coleman is a prime example of how a musician connects with his instrument. While Virgil Donati is more on the perfection and of calculating drum approach, Chris Coleman puts almost every other drummer to shame with the energy he transfers to his set. It's really pure pleasure to watch him to give his drums life. He hits everything from up high - much higher than most- but notice how square he is with any part of his set he is using. Very rare to actually be seen. All these elements are what separates him from the rest of the field Don't be afraid to go at the set with more energy - especially when you are practicing. Because you will become what you practice. Best of luck to you
